South Carolina 5A Championship Div-1, Div-2 Games

The similarity between this game and the Clemson-SMU game is hard to believe. Almost identical circumstances, exactly the same score. Irmo ties it 31-31 in the last minute, and Northwestern kicks a field goal to win it 34-31 on the last play of the game. The main difference was the length of the field goal, but still it seems a little freakish.

I'm sure many games have ended the same way in the past. But being so close together seems unusual.

Very similar ending. The Clemson Kickoff Return team set them up near midfield and the offense didn't have to move the ball far to get into FG range.

Northwestern's offense drove the ball 60-70 yards and then ran clock before kicking the game winner. Extremely impressive drive with the game on the line.

Why does SC split their 5A? Seems to water down competition to me.
Good question. Could it be the size of schools and they needed a split, or maybe they are tired of seeing Dutch Fork winning it all. Maybe giving someone else a chance to win it. lol I don’t know. Maybe btango or someone can answer that one.

I have a question for btango as well. What is Knotts overall record? I know McKissick has the most wins ever, but TK has to be up pretty high as well. Well over 400 wins i am sure.

Good luck figuring out the reason for the split, i think it is an attempt to get back to the Big 16 format that was around in the 80's and 90's. The really big schools are in the Spartanburg area and the Charleston area. The numbers in SC are way different than in NC for example DF is a big 5a school but adm is around 1800 while Irmo is small 5A with an adm at high 1400's. The largest Adm in SC is Dorman(Spartanburg area) at 3,100 and #3 is Summerville (Charleston area) at 2,600. There are more schools in Mecklenburg County with adm at 2,000 than all of SC......well almost.

Northwestern might be better than Dutch Fork this year. I know it was only a jamboree, but in their head to head matchup….

Northwestern beat Dutch Fork 15-14.

The 15 points in a little less than 2 quarters was more than the Dutch Fork defense gave up in 4 full quarters in almost every game they played this season.

It's the "norm" now. More titles. Everyone thinks it is for more money but it is all about keeping the members happy.

NC going back to eight is disappointing. Five or six would have been fine but thought eight is to many to me. I think it is especially had for basketball where the change needed was to address the charter and parochial schools in the smaller classifications. 4A is fine but football is getting its first charter title game team and I expect we will see more. No issue with the charters, Corvian's HC is top notch, but this will not be the last and with eight champions we are going to see more especially as those schools put emphasis on football.

I agree, I felt like 6 classifications would have been good. It’s going to be interesting to see how 8 is going to work out in N.C.

492-73 per Carolina Preps (aka Chris Hughes). When people ask Knotts he directs them to this page.

JT Curtis (Louisiana) became the all-time wins leader in 2023, but his record has been disputed because of 30 wins that were declared forfeits.

There was an ineligible player, so the state of Louisiana doesn’t recognize those wins while Maxpreps does give the coach credit for them.

Depending on who is keeping track, Curtis is over 620 wins and is the leader or he is still short of the record.
