Oak Grove vs North Davidson

ND lost that game because of two things, TURNOVERS & a bizarre “Let’s not put a running back in the game” offense. As for the referees, I thought OG got hit harder by the refs than ND did. OG had a lot of penalties that hurt them. As for Facebook, just stay off of it, you’ll be glad you did.

No complaints about the refs. That's just lunacy lol. The defense got hung out to dry as the game wore on, OG clearly won the line of scrimmage and it paid dividends later in the game.

It's hard for any team to win when you put the ball on the ground, in particular a one dimensional team. Holcomb clearly won the battle of wits, especially when he had a disadvantage in the kicking game.

Flash and substance.

One game plan had substance one did not.

Holcomb has always understood his kids and their strengths. He’s not afraid to air it out, but he’ll always come back to good running back if he can help it. What a win for the kids and the coaching staff.

I spent the last hour looking at Facebook, and many of my North Davidson “friends” just can’t take the loss. One blamed it all squarely on the referees. I can’t even... I was around a ton of neutral spectators... I think most were in agreement that there were plenty of flags to go around. I can’t stand the ND fans who believe they’ve never lost a game and that all bad results are all the fault of some outside factor.

First half for OG was a holding call every other play. It was called to tight both ways for sure. But glad I’m not the only one to think that about ND fans. It’s been like that forever.

I figured another year under Holcomb and having a senior class would get OG in a position that they would be contenders to win the conference. They are in the driver's seat now, but Salisbury and TVille may have something to say about it still. (Edit: I didn't realize Salisbury had beat TVille 27-0 tonight when I typed this.)

Salisbury is big and fast. They can line up man free on anyone in the league and force them to run the ball. The RB and QB can break it on any play. Defensively, they have two DL (one a D1) commit that are real strong. Thomasville did not play well last night, made many mistakes offensively and didn’t tackle. They are still a pretty good team.

Yes - but 1 was a late game heave and 2 were forced off of hard hits with hats on the ball - the only turnover that was unforced was the poor snap. So while they obviously hurt, it’s not like they were simply gifts on poor plays.

Yes, he was the QB for Lexington last year. He will now the QB for North this year and next year.

He is certainly an athlete and will improve a lot now that he’s in the head spot.

As for next year, I’d expect a challenge from the JV quarterback who will be a junior next year.

That means nothing at all, the first turnover came from a WR who was doing too much dancing instead of getting up the field and it cost him. It eventually led to an OG TD. The second TD came from running a QB instead of having a RB in the game. That also led to an OG TD. 14 points right there. North lost by 6.

ND and OG are fairly even. If i had to give the edge to one or another , I’d still give ND the edge just because they’ve got better athletes than OG . I think it’s time for flynn to Help Tesh on D and Honeycutt to take over the O( if that’s not already happened )

A turnover is a turnover but they are either forced or they are unforced. I didn’t say they were smart plays but it’s not like it was just placed on the ground or a poor throw was made. The way you make it sound, OG was outplayed which is far from what happened.

Murpheel54 , I’m guessing you’re an OG guy? And I’m guessing you use to be a ND guy? If so, how do OG people feel about the ND coaching staff as a whole? I’ve heard some have 0 respect for Flynn and company and heard comments at the game Friday about how much OG people can’t stand there staff. Any truth behind this?

You sound butt hurt with those first few sentences. They literally beat ND and didn’t play perfect ball. ND didn’t play that sloppy. 1 turnover don’t count, it was last second play. The others was OG doing what you practice. Creating turnovers. OG also had a turnover on a ball That was badly under thrown. OG probably had more penalty yards and no special teams. They still won. Stop being a hater and admit OG is better. Lexington hands down had more better athletes then Central. Central proved to be the better team.

Correct on both fronts (Mark and I played together). I can’t comment for OG people as a whole but can for myself - I don’t think it is about respect - I know those guys are great guys, can coach, etc. I have no problem with them - I think that Mark leaving ND and coming to OG created a dynamic that left many at ND feeling like they have to defend the ‘brand’ and sometimes take it too personally. No one at OG asked the lines to be drawn the way they were drawn - but we are OG now. My daughter graduated from ND but my son will play at OG.

Not butt hurt at all. Didn’t even pull for either team in the game. Just used my eyes and what i saw . It’s okay if you disagree , but i think we both know the team that wins isn’t always the better team. I’m just saying i think ND is a better team all around . But like i said I’m not mad OG won, they deserved it last night .

Sorry but I don’t think any coaching staff in the county and over county lines like Flynn. He definitely was a Jerk and ran score up on my old stumping grounds last year. He on-side kicked us up 40. The staff and Flynn is pretty knowledgeable, just Jerks.

I thought the teams were pretty even. The season is far from over but at the moment I think Salisbury is the team to beat and OG at least at the moment looks like the team to contend with them.

Time will tell on ND and if they can maintain the offense. However, the defense has a long way to go this year.

Apparently you didn't read anything I wrote about the game earlier in this thread. I said OG deserved the win because they played hard and took advantage of ND's mistakes. That does not mean that OG was outplayed at all, not one single bit, if they were outplayed North would have won the game. The truth is, North's WR made a mistake by dancing around and OG took advantage of it. Credit to them. North should have had a RB in the game all night instead of being so obvious with their offense, which led to their QB not only turning the ball over but being injured and from my understanding being out for the year. This is as clear as I can put it. I realize that the former ND folks who are now at OG feel as if they dominated North last night and that is simply not the case at all. North made mistakes, just like they did vs. Parkland and Davie County and it cost them. I have a good feeling these two teams may very well meet each other again this season come playoff time, and if that happens it should be another barn burner!

Agreed on a possible rematch - any news on Moore? He’s a beast - hope he’s not out for the year!

I hadn’t really thought about the playoffs and meeting again.

Very possible. With OG a likely playoff team this year and with the arrival of North Forsyth (maybe not a playoff team, but i guess it could happen for them), that puts two more teams who would go in the East bracket before North Davidson.

The line is going to be drawn somewhere in this area if it goes like it has been going lately.
The 2AA West is so strong. I think North Davidson would have been a 9 seed last year if they’d have gone West.

I understand that was the plan for next year. He should probably move that timeline up.

Murpheel, I was told late last night that he's out for the year but I don't have 100% proof of that. If true, the Jenkins kid (Lexington transfer) will probably be the QB. It's a wait see thing I guess.

ND had the better QB and receivers and dominated the kicking game.

Oak Grove won the line of scrimmage for the majority of the game and has the better running back in Shewcow. They also looked to be better conditioned than ND at the end. ND looked gassed.

I think we know who the better coach is, not just on game-day, but in preparation also.

It’s not been a secret that that North has played some undisciplined, mistake football since last year. They were so much better last year they got away with it.... until state.

This year the mistakes persist. That starts with the coaching staff.

OG was not squeaky clean Friday. But their staff is better.

I don't really understand that mentality, defending the brand. We all knew what was going to happen a few years ago, I suppose some just aren't over it.

My dad asked me if I was torn the other night. I said a little bit, since Holcomb was my coach and according to the district lines I would have gone to Oak Grove if I lived in the same place today. I still have a special spot for North, but as many of you know I said last year that this is New ND and New Ledford, plus Oak Grove. Old North and Old Ledford are officially dead.

To that point, are there Ledford people who feel they have to defend the brand, so to speak? I don't get out that way much anymore.

I think that’s a really good way to put it, the old ND is dead and gone and probably ain’t coming back. East Davidson is just what they need right now.

I would have liked to see Shewcow and Wright in the same backfield for East Davidson this year. East's offense I believe would look better than it has. I remember years ago when Shewcow played county ball for Davidson County. That young man is physical and runs the ball with a purpose. He has a very good offensive line in front of him at Oak Grove and I called it last week when I said they would give North Davidson a hard time with the running game.

Mark can coach football. This is the first of many wins over his old school in the future. Flynn is a good coach, but it is the disciplined veteran that found the simpler approach and won. The no back and spread is fun to coach if you can execute. It sounds like the old ball coach just got the best of the pupil.

What a lot of people aren't talking about or they just may not know, is that North's top two RB's did not even play in the OG game. Their #1 RB is the same one who was injured during last year's playoff game with SW Edgecombe. A really nasty injury too. I heard he wouldn't be cleared to play until sometime in the middle of the season. Make no mistake about it, if he comes back 100% healthy and isn't "nervous" about the injury then that will make North's offense WAAAAYYY better than it currently is. Their #2 RB wears #15 and he was injured during the Davie County game. I haven'd heard a timetable when he will return although he seemed to be walking around quite well on the sidelines at OG. If these two young men return healthy and ready to go, you will see a different ND offense as far as the running game goes.

That is good to know. It think that it is a credit to the program that this isn’t something that was mentioned in the days after the game, or even leading up to the game.

Injuries happen, and unfortunately sometimes they decide games. I hope both are up and running again soon!

Irrelevant but I feel like I started to turn a little on ND when they started wearing those ridiculous jerseys year after year. They topped out in about 2011-2014, just incredible and A+ quality design. Now I feel like they try way way too hard to be “ modern” and “ hip” on those things. Just be the black knights baby.

Hear Honeycutt is officially taking over the offense and Flynn is moving to help out the D. If true, good move in my opinion. Honeycutt will bring more balance offensively and Flynn will improve the struggling defense .

That move is basically firing the Defense Coordinator with out actually firing him. “Hey you suck but I’ll let you keep your title”
Who is the Defensive Coordinator? Was he a Holcomb coach?

Well hope those RB’s can play Defense too. Cuz that’s what got them beat against Davie and OG!

I think Tesh was the DC.

We did discuss the fact that 15 was out, but I'm not sure that affected the game all that much. 20 is a pretty good back, and Flynn barely used him. He seems to fall in love with the empty backfield sets, and then won't let it go when it's obviously not working.
