Oak Grove vs North Davidson

OG sack stops ND drive at 31 yd line. Kick attempt is good. ND 24-21 with 3:34 left in 3rd qtr.

OG 3 and out. Easily their best punt or kick of the night puts ND at their own 33 yard line.

End of 3rd qtr. ND leads 24-21 and has a 3rd and 3 at their own 49. North qb isn't slow but isn't a major threat to bust for big yards scrambling.

OG stopped at ND 3 yard line. OG goes for it. Stop on 4th down gives ND the ball at their own 2.

OG safety. 30-24 and OG gets ball back with 3:10 left.

North has driven the ball all night but has killed themselves with mistakes. OG has played really well, give them all the credit they deserve.

OG first down. ND only has 1 timeout, OG may be able to run the clock out now

Mark Holcomb is the stinking man. Man that guy can get kids to play. OG earning real respect after the doubters laughed at their first two opponents.

Meanwhile, your state runner up is now 0-3. ND looking real ugly right now.

For perspective, first time ND is 0-3 since 1972. Brutal.

I was at the game and ran into the backup middle linebackers Uncle Reggie at the concession stand (we both ordered 3 snack size almond joys, so it was a natural ice breaker). Turns out that his neighbor plays 2nd French horn in the band. Their lower brass section is mediocre at best by the way. Well, anyway, turns out both the marching band and the team have had to relocate practice areas due to fire ants? Which explains why they were slightly off tonight. Anyone know anything about that?

This North Davidson team is unreal with the turnovers. OG scored 14 points off of turnovers tonight. Third straight game that turnovers have killed this team. The "No Running Back" offense was an absolute head scracther to me, maybe others can explain that. Running your only QB 20 times came back to bite them as well. Oak Grove deserved to win that game because they played hard, took advantage of North's mistakes and did a great job of coaching from the sidelines. This OG team is nice, but I agree, if they play a team with a lot of speed they will be in trouble. North's best player, #1, ate them up on the outside when ND decided to throw him the ball, ND's mistake was they didn't throw it to him enough. Good job OG, you deserved it.

Those should be sprayed every spring.

Well, we all get to be wrong from time to time. I was wrong tonight. I had ND by 14.

I said in another thread that OG’s coaching staff is superior. I think that I’ll stick with that statement.

My first reason is the clock management by North at the end of the first half. It was sheer good fortune that they scored after burning up a minute of clock prior to a time out.

Second is the “no running back” plan. It’s bad. Oak Grove had nothing else to focus on. They adjusted well and stopped what I thought might be a track meet.

North is still the better team on paper. I wouldn’t write them off just yet. Yes, they are 0-3, but they are far better than their losing teams from the mid-1990s.

I figured another year under Holcomb and having a senior class would get OG in a position that they would be contenders to win the conference. They are in the driver's seat now, but Salisbury and TVille may have something to say about it still. (Edit: I didn't realize Salisbury had beat TVille 27-0 tonight when I typed this.)

OG needs to improve the kicking game. ND probably had a cumulative 150 yard field position advantage in the kicking game.

OG just gashed the ND defense on the ground all night. Shewcow is tough as nails and very patient as a runner. The OG offensive line moved them all night, and ND's defense was gassed at the end.

The empty sets for ND reminded me of the state championship game last year. It gets pretty predictable when you put all of your running duties on the QB. I know 15 was hurt, but Greene is not a bad back. I'm not sure what Flynn was thinking there.

Post game observations:

OG looks like ND from the early 2010s style wise. They want to establish the run and get you with playaction. Coach Holcomb has the team humming exactly how he wants, they are well coached and make good adjustments through the game. Physical on offense and defense, sound fundamentally.

North wants to throw the ball and outscore you. That works if you don't turn it over, as they did again and again. Gotta protect the ball. Defense isn't horrible on 2A level but is nothing compared to last two years, obviously we all knew that already. Not sure how things will go for them if the QB is hurt though, I'll wait to hear more details. If he is out for the season that will probably seriously hamper the offense. ND may be looking at 3rd or 4th place at best depending on if they can get it together and adjust.

This season is going to be very interesting in the CCC. OG plays Lexington next week while North plays East.

OG and ND game was good. Had to sit on ND side, was so crowded. Was by the band. So double the worse of seats. Crying fans and drums. ND has no clue on defense. Offense has weapons. OG passing game is weak but sure can run the ball. The defense is solid but has no speed. OG specials teams is really bad. Could of saved the drama of the game if they had a punter or a Kicker. ND started at mid field almost every possession. ND didn’t play sloppy, they was just out coached and outplayed. OG was the better team. The tides are turned. Sorry ND fans!!!!!

Something interesting overheard in a discussion in the stands tonight:

So far, North and Oak Grove have faced off in every single fall sport...

Oak Grove has won every single one of those meetings. W Golf, Volleyball, M&W CC, Soccer, JV and V Football.

There are some more golf matches, one more volleyball game and one more soccer game to go. So, North still has a chance to get on the board.

I spent the last hour looking at Facebook, and many of my North Davidson “friends” just can’t take the loss. One blamed it all squarely on the referees. I can’t even... I was around a ton of neutral spectators... I think most were in agreement that there were plenty of flags to go around. I can’t stand the ND fans who believe they’ve never lost a game and that all bad results are all the fault of some outside factor.
