Best of luck to you guys. And congrats to making it to another state championshipI am very excited to be in our fourth straight championship. I never discount the east because of the97team(which I thought was one of our best teams ever) and the 2004 team which was loaded. Both were dealt very bad losses.
I've seen a couple of this Northside poster's posts in other threads. He's too likable, unless he's one of those cats who kills you with kindness.Best of luck to you guys. And congrats to making it to another state championship
When you are really the only poster for a school you have to be careful with what you say, but in general I don't see the point of bashing other teams so I try my best to keep it respectable!I've seen a couple of this Northside poster's posts in other threads. Young gun13, congrats on your team advancing to the state championship. All I've read on this playoff run that you guys went on is in spite of y'all winning, the so called better team lost, Bunn, Clinton, and East Duplin. No disrespect to those teams, but all I know is one time may be a fluke, but twice is a trend, and three times is a habit. You guys winning and avenging earlier losses is apparently not a coincidence, maybe you're the actual better team. Again, congratulations on your team's accomplishment, very impressive playoff run.
I don't discount any team that makes it. However, I will throw this out there. I think it's funny that both Clinton and East Duplin wanted their shot at Shelby. They felt sure they had what it took, but now all their left with is pulling for a team that they felt sure they could handle. Let this be a lesson, that you never look ahead.
well said EDPanther99. while unlike you i feel Northside's defense is very good, at least in the way they stack up in the box against the run, i agree that their offense is good but not very good. their QB is really their only big offensive threat. he scrambles well and has a good arm. without him i feel their offense would be below average. the only way i see Northside as a team that can challenge Shelby is if Shelby has problems running the ball against that "put everybody in the box" defense. the NS D is not very bulky or big, but they are athletic and swarm to the ball. NS really plays almost in an unconventional way that throws their opponents off balance by not really knowing what are the best adjustments to make against them. my boy EDPanther99 described them to a T. on offense they spread you out repeatedly with very little intention of throwing. most of the time after the ball is snapped their QB will not even look at his recievers to check coverage or anything. he looks straight ahead and starts running. but you still have to cover the wideouts or they will be wide open for the pass. they really are predictable on offense and defense, but theyre still kind of tricky to stop. but honestly, a team with Shelby's experience and pedigree should be able to figure them out and win by 2 or 3 touchdowns. i expect NS to give Shelby a challenge but not enough to ever doubt who the winner will be. and im certainly not pulling for Northside like one Shelby poster suggested. i also wouldnt say im pulling for Shelby either. what i will say is i want NS to lose more than i want Shelby to lose.I'm not making a prediction based on what I want to happen. I'm not pulling for either of these teams. ED is out... however, based on last night East Duplin is just not as good as I thought they were (especially in the coaching department) as this Northside team is not very imposing or tough to figure out.
They will go five wide at times with absolutely no intention of throwing it downfield. It's all designed to remove defenders from the box to allow the QB space to operate. About 25% of the time they'll throw a screen from this formation to the three receiver side; two receivers block immediately in an attempt to get the third in space one on one with a defender. Throw some nickel/zone coverage on them, spy the QB with a fast, sure tackling defender and voila!
When they run, they do so mainly from the pistol and power I formation and they will do so to the left side. They will also throw from these two formations and this is when they'll go downfield utilizing play action.
On defense, they stick 10 guys in the box and dare you to throw. If you can't throw it makes them look other worldly on D, which they are not.
I do not think a team like Shelby with as many quality athletes as you can put on the field, and with the quality of coaches that you have will have much trouble with this team.
when NS "let it rain" as you called it, our starting corner on that side, who also happens to be our starting QB, had just went out with an injury. if he was in, i seriously doubt those passes are completed. not an excuse. just a fact.Okay guys, here's a long one. I actually attended the East Dublin - Northside Jacksonville game last night. In fact, I stood on the sidelines in the end zone with my Shelby state championship T-shirt on. I received some pretty interesting looks/comments. I also took some notes, and here is my full workup on N.J.
N.J. Strength:
Their fanbase -- N.J. traveled extremely well and were loud the entire game. (stormed the home teams field after the last knee). I don't think this translates to a big stadium though...
Their Cornerbacks -- I saw some of the most beautiful picks/pass breakups I've ever seen in high school football. East Duplin's passing game was useless all night. It was almost acrobatic.
Passing game -- This one is really difficult to call but overall I have to rank it as positive. N.J. hardly threw the ball all game, but when they got the ball, losing 6-7, with 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter they let it rain. and it was nasty.... they stormed down the field in 8 plays ultimately winning the game and a championship birth.
N.J Weakness:
Turnovers -- The ball was on the ground way too much for N.J. as well as E.D.
Run game -- Even though it seemed like N.J. relied on the backfield for 7/8 of the game, it was largely ineffective. I saw some great runs around the edge, but they were more due to poor containment by E.D. then by N.J. ability.
Special teams -- Just bad... fumbles, poor tackling, and several punts that didn't go anywhere but up.
Offensive line -- It wasn't that the offensive line lacked skill, they just seemed grossly out of shape. Lots of big guts on short kids and lots of huffing and puffing after long plays. You could tell they were exhausted in the 4th quarter because the QB pressure really picked up. He had to immediately scramble to make plays.
My opinion:
On offense -- I think that Truck will have a field day around the corner, and Sarratt will complete a lot of short throws with long runs after the catch. While these corners are seriously skilled, its hard to make a tackle when you dove trying to intercept the pass...
On Defense -- This is where it could get fun. N.J. strikes me as a low scoring, run first offense, and their last two games seem to support that. With that said, I think they have a weak O-line and Shelby's #44/#95/#5 will make sure their backfield spends a lot of time on the ground. If N.J. gets desperate and decides to start throwing the ball like last night, our corners need to be ready. This is the scariest part of N.J.'s game IMO...
Overall -- My opinions are subjective of course (and maybe a little biased), but I think Shelby is the better ball team. Still I would NEVER underestimate a team that has made their way here by slaying giants. This team won't quit either. Therefore, I think N.J. scores one early and one late, but the Golden Lions run away with it in the second half to claim big #4!
Shelby wins 35-14
It sounds like Kinston part 2? However, if there is bad weather it will probably come down to who is better upfront. We saw that against Monroe when the offense stalled several times in the cold.I'm not making a prediction based on what I want to happen. I'm not pulling for either of these teams. ED is out... however, based on last night East Duplin is just not as good as I thought they were (especially in the coaching department) as this Northside team is not very imposing or tough to figure out.

Good assessment. I think Shelby will win but I hope Northside finds away...Nothing against either team...People just like the underdogVery understandable, but like I said my opinions are subjective. Still very impressive that a team who couldn't move the ball much all game stormed down the field with under 5 minutes left. Congrats to E.D. on a great season.
