Avery won their tournament in Virginia out of 34 teams. Put 5 in the finals 3 winning it and 2 3rd place. Didn’t have 4 their of wrestlers Pritz,Cable,Adams, and Parker. Ben Jordan beat a 2 time Virginia State champ in the finals Adam Gibson 9-2. Ethan Shell was most outstanding wrestler lower weights.

Yeah I saw the Nowell match was a good one. That kid from Alcoa Lance Williams at Hwt was a state champion his freshman year. He is a 2023 kid has several D1 offers for football

Wirt County is a little county right below Ritchie County where I live. It is so amazing on how they take these kids to tournaments so far away now. Wrestling these kids from other states and programs are great experience I think. Even if you take a beating, you can watch dims and go to camps and set your goals even higher to shoot for. Being a former wrestler, I am really enjoying this thread! Thanks again for another great sports site to get on!

Wow Robbinsville is on a roll!! I never knew what a strong wrestling program they had until I started reading back over their history. I saw a video of their wrestling building. It was as nice as the small colleges here!!! They really have something to be proud of!!!

It's even more impressive being we are in a small county with a small population and one of the highest unemployment rates in the state . The county only has 370 kids in high school. It taken us decades to get to were we are now. That's why I dislike Charters so much. Charters open up and get kids from all over and win titles in 3 years. Go Robbinsville and Avery.

That really is impressive!! I don’t think we have charter schools in WV? We have the Catholic Private schools that are in the small classification here called Single A with is like your 1A. That really is impressive to get that quality of a wrestling program from how remote you are. Seems like here the best programs are near the big cities or conferences near one. Does all the SMC schools have a wrestling program? Is the SMC as famous for wrestling as football? Avery is in another conference, but it’s still a mountain school? All I can say is you all sure have a strong athletic program for the kids down there. They are really lucky to have such good role models, parents and support!!

That is really impressive, and to have that many assistant coaches is almost like 1 on 1 training! Maybe 2 to 1 in some weight classes? There must be a heck of a wrestling tradition there or a several decades ago it really took off there? I saw a young man by the name of Orr was a state champ there in the mid 90’s and then another young man named Orr in 2014 or 15? I wondered if they was father/son or uncle and nephew? One day I am gonna get a wild hair and drive down from WV to see a Robbinsville wrestling match and another trip to watch a football game at the Big Oaks, lol!

Avery is behind. Still got conference matches and the conference tournament. They wrestled the last 3 conference matches today.

You guys help me out. Trying to understand wrestling, what are duals? Is there team c-ship and individual? There was some pairings and where they were wrestling in the paper this morning. Is the start of state c-ship?

Duals start Monday 1st and 2nd rds.

Duals is more like football. Team vs team. 14 weight classes.

Individuals tournament kids have to be chosen . One team might have 6 kids make it while another team might have 10 make it. It's not team vs team. It's kid vs kid but it's also added up for a team tournament champ team.

Duals have alot of strategy. Kids wrestling different weight to give the team an advantage.

You should go to the individuals in Greensboro at the coliseum and watch the finals on Saturday February 19th. It’s pretty awesome.

Come on. I gave you 4 weight classes what about the other 10. I believe you can beat Avery in a dual. Should be a great match if Avery can get there. Avery is definitely a underdog in the West.

Not sure how Avery is the underdog now that everyone is back in the lineup. They do have 8 returning state finalists. Maybe a month ago I would buy that when Cable, Adams, Parker, and Vance where not wrestling.

Really surprised Adams got down to 152. Now the ? will be can he be smart and make weight. Wonder if Odom will move Nowell to 138 to wrestle Shell if Robbinsville and Avery meet. Wonder if he would move Fink to 120 to wrestle Pritz since he is a freshman. The 106 match could be a really good one.

No way Nowell would go up in a dual situation with no guarantee on a match with Shell. Now I could see Williams going 220 to guarantee wins at 95 and 220. Biggest matches 06, 20, 45, and 52. All the other weights are for the most part locked in.

I've never liked the way they do this in wrestling. Teams like Mt Airy will rarely ever get to host.

Seeding doesn’t matter in the 3rd and 4th rounds. It goes to most central school. They basically add up the total miles for the 3 traveling schools. Whichever equation works to the smallest milage gets to host. I was told it was Swain by about 5 miles. It’s always Avery or Swain depending on who the 4th team is. Robbinsville never gets to host.

Yes seems like it should be at Robbinsville since you got the 1 seed. Avery wrestled about 10 more duals but had 2 losses when they had kids out.
