My realignment proposal

There are enough 3A teams thirty minutes or less from Thomasville to form a good, competitive conference in most sports in that classification only. Probably won’t happen either.

I actually sorta like Simmons. Northwood is the outlier in my opinion. North Moore in same conference kinda makes sense to me but would still be a haul for Wheat and Trinity. PAC7, as I have stated many times, was perfect for gates, travel and rivalries but I don’t think it survives because of classifications.
 
Thomasville, to my knowledge, has never played Pine Lake or West Iredell in anything. Both are an hour away. South Rowan 45 minutes. All three require either traveling down 85 toward Charlotte or west on 40. Especially at rush hour on Friday, those travel times grow.
I’m sure we won’t be completely happy with the results of realignment. But aside from athletic competitiveness, most of those schools shouldn’t expect much of a gate coming from Thomasville. And virtually nothing for weeknight sports. We’ve been down this path before back in the Union Pines, Chatham Central days. And that was when we had a much larger, more dedicated fanbase.

Should that be West Rowan instead of West Iredell? He has West Iredell listed twice in another conference that makes much more sense for them, so I think he made a mistake

I don’t think so because W. Rowan is 5A and that’s a 3A/4A conference. It’s true that Simmons has W. Iredell in another conference and they’re a better fit there, but I don’t see anywhere in the west that he has a conference with three classifications (and W. Rowan would be the only 5A, which doesn’t seem to work).

Sorta like whoever said S. Davidson to N. Stokes was 1 hour and 22 minutes has never driven it. Plus there is not a safe mile of highway on that trip.

As I was the one who said that, let me address this. I don't know what a "safe mile of highway" is. If you could enlighten us, I would appreciate it. What I do know is that we think nothing of sending busses up some very unsafe roads for kids to play games. Teams travelling to Mountain Heritage or Mitchell will usually go up NC 226. Ask Google "what is the steepest road in North Carolina" and this is the first hit the AI returns. Apparently, there are parts of the road that have 10-14% grades for miles at a time (and I have driven up this road countless times and know for a fact just how steep it is). Only a few years ago an activity bus slid off this highway heading downhill, thankfully no one was seriously hurt.
I only know how long google says it takes to get from S. Davidson to N. Stokes, just like most of the projections between this school or that depend on what the computer tells me. I think there are very few people in the state who would know the time, distances and driving conditions between any two given schools. But I do know for an absolute fact that the association asks certain schools here in the west to make long drives, up and down mountains, on a regular basis to form conferences. I don't see why schools in other parts of the state shouldn't have to do likewise.
 
Alleghany to South and North Stokes are a haul for our area.
I've only ever driven down the road from Alleghany towards I-77 once (but only about a year ago, so it's fresh in my mind). I agree that it's a dangerous road for a bus, like any other mountain road, but I don't think it compares with 226 or a few others further west.
 
Back when I was in HS in the late 80s we played a state playoff softball game at Mitchell and we went up 226 on an activity bus and got to top. It wouldn’t start when we stopped at a gas station. Lol!! I rode back with my parents and we came back through Boone.

I thought they were 4A so I overlooked them.

What Sportsnut is referencing is the number of fatalities om NC109 south between Denton and Thomasville. It’s actually the opposite of the steep, curvy mountain roads in far western NC. It’s a straight twenty mile stretch of road where idiots think they can pass the car in front of them that’s only going 65 in a 55. Lots of head on collisions and rear end accidents where somebody is stopped for a left turn. It’s unfortunate that any activity bus has to traverse long, tough terrain. But just because some must doesn’t mean everybody should.

Comparing Simmon's conference projections to what @GrizzlyDevil came up with I can see some pretty big differences. For instance, Simmons moves these schools from the east to the west:
Williams (6A)
Southern Alamance (6A)
Morehead (4A)
Reidsville (4A)
McMichael(3A)
Bartlett Yancey(3A)
North Moore (3A)
Grizzly Devil had a table with his projections and showed how many teams from each class were in the east and west. 6A was pretty balanced with 30 in the west and 29 in the east, so this makes things a little more unequal. But 4A had 33 west and 26 east under Grizzly Devil's proposal, so Simmons makes it 35 west and 24 east. Likewise, 3A was 31 west and 28 east but what Simmons has would make it 34 west and 25 east, so that could be a problem.
Simmons also has two nine-team conferences. The following 1A/2A conference:

Mountain Island
Comm. Sch. of Dav.
Highland Tech
Cherryville
Langtree Charter
Corvian Community
Christ the King
Thomas Jefferson(1A)
Bonnie Cone (1A)

And this 3A/4A conference:
Cramer
Burns
East Gaston
Lincoln Charter
Lincolnton(3A)
Shelby(3A)
West Lincoln(3A)
Piedmont Community*(3A)
Bessemer City(3A)

Both seem a little unwieldy. Shelby would probably choose to play Crest, Kings Mountain and S. Point in non-conference play since there's one non-football playing school in their conference, but that's it. And it would be nice to keep Cherryville and Bessemer City in the same conference.

The NCHSAA didn't bat an eye at putting Draughn in with Mitchell, Mountain Heritage, Avery, Madison, Owen and Rosman. Long drives up and down mountains with fog and ice during winter. Madison and Owen are mostly interstate, but the others are long stretches on two lane roads. But this is only a problem for a certain part of the state, so we're expected to just suck it up.
If the road you describe is such a problem, it sounds like the NCHP should have a field day writing tickets. This website cites a study showing the seven deadliest stretches of road in NC and that area didn't make the list.

And equally so if it's number 88, so what? You guys are the ones saying busses shouldn't travel on it because it's dangerous. Show your work.
No one is knocking your proposal, just making a comment. I commend all that has put something out there to keep our attention during the slow time of the year. I am not going to debate which road is the most dangerous.

I am sorry I struck a nerve with you, I had no idea who put a time on the travel between the 2 schools. I do know how dangerous it is traveling on an activity bus anywhere in the state. I am out.
 
The man simply said it’s a dangerous stretch of road. You’re making it more than it is. It’s really not a contest.
i don't think I am making more of it than it is. Every Burke County school (excluding E. Burke) has drives of at least an hour up and down mountains multiple times a year because of the conferences we are in. That translates to our kids getting home later, sometimes on school nights, increased travel costs and other associated burdens. Remember, those busses have to crawl down those steep inclines coming home. But when I propose that maybe other schools could travel similar distances, suddenly there are all kinds of objections.

Some suggestions I think might work decent:

SW Onslow in 4A Conference 1

Red Springs and Fairmont in 3A Conference 2

Midway, Princeton, and Goldsboro all in 2A Conference 4

Union and possibly Lakewood in 3A Conference 4
