I saw tonight that Mitchell will return to the field next Saturday the 19th against Draughn.

Mountain Heritage sounds like they are working on sites for games and will be returning soon. They will play Mitchell at Mars Hill and Avery at Madison.

Glad to see what seemed unrealistic and unthinkable a week ago is going to indeed happen!

Avery, Mitchell and M Heritage all back in school that soon? If so, good for those kids, schools and communities. High school sports brings communities together. I had heard some of those schools "may not" be open for possibly months. I am old Lees-McRae and App State guy that visits multiple times a year to the area. Thanks for any clarification and prayers to God's Country up there.

That’s good news. Especially with MH being #1 in some of the polls. Glad they will get the chance to play.
I think it's the best thing for that community. Well for a lot of that community. They only downside is they're going to have to play in that conference. RBI wise they'll probably end up 4th or 5th. Because that's a terrible football conference. But for mountain heritage who's the only one that has a chance it'll be a great thing to get some games under their bill before the playoffs

Do you know what things are still needed around there? I know there were drives early on and I know lots of things were sent. But it's been a little while now so supplies may be dwindling.
Thank you for asking. Supplies are in decent shape right now in Mitchell. Still getting in stuff daily but feel free to check back in, in a week or 2 as this is going to be a long process for many in this area. Still can’t believe what I see at times. Keep us (WNC) in your prayers.

Go Mountaineers

Thanks all for the donations much appreciated. The needs now are for Sleeping bags, blankets, propane or kerosene heaters, hot hands, and such for folks still without power, 35 at my house this morning so it's getting a little cooler.

A sentence I would have never thought about saying. I was getting a call from a Carolina Spine about rescheduling an appointment with a brain neurosurgeon that I was supposed to have seen the week after Helene. But when she called me I couldn't hear her question I said,
Hang on a second a Blackhawk helicopter is taking off and I can't hear you.

I went up to Mitchell and Yancey yesterday and Yancey is probably the worst shape in WNC. South Toe and Cane River are completely wiped out. So many houses washed off their foundation and completely gone. Mitchell was still pretty bad too but Yancey seemed awful.

Did you venture to the northern end of Mitchell County? Tipton Hill, Buladean, Poplar, Relief, Toecane areas? They are much like Yancey.

I am so sorry for all of you living in western North Carolina. You and the loss of an old friend from here is constantly on my mind. This is something that happens on the east coast of NC and they are more prepared but I have never heard of the mountains being hit like this. My heart goes out to each and everyone suffering from this tragedy.

Has anyone heard from my old board friend Purple1995? I sure hope he is okay. Post and let us know!

As far as Mitchell vs Mountain Heritage go Mitchell

I know this isn’t intended to be negative at all but the part about the eastern part of the state being better prepared for this is a little misleading. There simply wasn’t enough of a precedent for the different elements this brought to properly prepare for it all.

I spent a large portion of my day today in Biltmore Village in multiple buildings. After being in and out of different areas, I’m going to share with you some interesting numbers. For you number crunchers that haven’t saw the Swananoa River’s numbers during Helene, these stats are eye popping.

The previous modern record River crest in Biltmore Village : 20.7ft. 1916

River crest during Helene: 27.33 at approximately 3:45pm

Here is the truly astounding part:

The Swananoa River went above the 1916 total of 20.7ft at approximately 10am on 9/27 AND REMAINED above this total until right around 11pm on 9/27 when it finally dropped below 20.7ft Yes, the river stayed above the highest known modern crested amount for 12+ hours of the day. 😳😳There is no precedent to compare this to.

Oh, and major flooding for this area is considered anything above 18ft.

There is one noted event in 1791 that estimates a Swananoa River crest of 26ft. At least 230years and no such event had occurred.

1916 WOW ! Sorry, I was born 34 years later and I have not looked up the history of high river crests in the South Western Mountains. I just know I have heard many times in my life hearing of hurricanes coming on shore on the coast of NC and some coming inland through many states.

That’s absolutely brutal. It’s hard to wrap your head around the devastation in Yancey—sounds like a complete disaster zone. South Toe and Cane River getting wiped out is just heartbreaking. It’s insane how nature can just obliterate everything in its path. Mitchell being in rough shape too just adds to the chaos. Hope they get the help they need, but man, it’s going to take a long time to recover from this.
