Williams High School is the top seed and received a first-round bye in the Mid-Piedmont Conference Tournament. First-round games are held at the higher seed before semifinals and finals at Asheboro.
Fourth-seeded Eastern Guilford plays host to fifth-seeded Southern Alamance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the first round. The winner plays Williams in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The winners of Tuesday night’s first-round games between No. 3 Asheboro / No. 6 Southeast Guilford and No. 2 Southern Guilford / No. 7 Southwestern Randolph meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the other semifinal.
The championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Burlington Williams and Southern Guilford are head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Eastern Guilford , although 16-8 and 7-5 , is a bit down from the last two years, the only other squad that could possibly get on a roll and win this tournament. Tommy Cole, ex Williams and Elon star, seems to have the Williams Bulldogs peaking at the most advantageous time. Williams has been ranked among the top ten 3-A squads all year, while Southern Guilford, with its best basketball team ever, even going back to the Sumner High School days, has steadily improved and could be a force in the state playoffs. Asheboro, which will probably ease into the playoffs as a 25-28 seed , has sixteen wins, seven coming against 2-A teams and a loss to an 11-14 1- A team , North Wilkes. I'll say, type, guess that Williams will make it to the fourth round, Southern Guilford and Eastern Guilford to the third, while Asheboro will yet again be ousted in the first round. Good luck to the Guilford County schools, and also to Burlington Williams.
