Independence at Hough and Mallard Creek and Watauga are tough Second Round matchups for sure

I guess MC is better than last year, but I think even Nepsy might agree that they have the players to be a lot better than they showed last night. They were simply superior to LN, and it seemed like at times they were happy to just toy with them. I felt that If they had tightened up and gone hard after every point like the needed it, they could have completely destroyed LN.

I'm no expert on MC, but I believe they have potential they have not yet shown.

They showed it earlier in the year in Ohio against Archbishop Moeller who is 12-1 after their playoff win last night.

The same thing was said about their ability to show up last season as well. Nothing but respect foe MC, I'm just saying this was the exact same conversation as last season.

That's true, and I think Moeller has a better than even shot at winning their championship.

But I don't think MC has played their best game yet, even including Moeller. I know this is nothing more than personal opinion, and in court my case would be thrown out immediately. I just keep having the feeling that MC could be better if they eliminated some mistakes. Come to think of it, I guess that's a stupid remark. Any team would be better if they didn't make mistakes. I just have the feeling that MC is on the edge of greatness.

This is nothing against Wautauga. I was particularly impressed by their students who were on TV news after the flooding. I'm sure students from other schools felt the same, but the Watauga students got the coverage, so they get a little extra credit.

From what I’m seeing next Friday only high 34 in Boone. So figure temperatures start dropping by evening and at night. With winds whipping. Possibly good chance of wind snow. Whoever goes bundle up. It’s going to be cold but a good game.

Wautaga has lost 3 games in 3 years and while the competition is a notch down they are well coached with a very good QB who killed them with his feet LY. They won't find him sitting in the pocket like they found that kid last night.

That said...maybe MC found the recipe for success last night. No more bubble screens and buck sweeps. Two very good QBs and #3 between the tackles 25-30 times. Take away a few holding penalties and they rush for 400+ yards and score 50 last night. Threw 2 passes.

Sometimes simple is better.

One of the passes was straight to a wide open defender in the end zone. I guess the coach decided he didn't need any more of that.

I hope to see a Hough.Mallard Creek rematch

Boy, how many times have I seen the bubble screens and buck sweeps, and it not work.

I think Hough is the best team in 4a but we have been here before. Indy kind of reminds me of some of those Chambers/Vance teams. Huge chip on their shoulder and playing with house money...they are not gonna afraid.
I think 4a is hough, weddington, or grimsley’s to lose. Hate that Indy gets this match up in the 2nd rd. Wish they got placed in the lower half of the bracket. They probably would’ve cruised through until they ran into weddington. I think Hough is good enough to beat grimsley this year. As for weddington, they probably have the best front 7 on the east coast. That alone will take them a long way.

Correct. The conversation around Mallard Creek's expectations seems to repeat itself year after year, and it’s important to recognize the weight of those expectations. The past few years, there has been a lot of skepticism about their consistency, and it seems like we're hearing similar concerns this time around. The gradual decrease in trash talk and reverse psychological posts from MC fans could indicate a more cautious approach, perhaps stemming from previous disappointments. While they have a strong program and a history of success, the pressure to consistently perform at such a high level can lead to challenges. Look back at last season, there were moments when they struggled against teams that were not traditionally seen as strong contenders. However, I have seen MC send many of the athletes to the most prestigious colleges. Good luck to both teams.

Yup...just figured out who you are. How many screen names has this been? 8? 10?

I don't disagree with any of these statements. I think the one thing that separates the two is coaching. Habich has the ability to game plan as well as anyone in the state and he gets 100% of the effort from each play on the team.

It's my opinion, based on the ADM numbers, that Watauga County needs a second high school. That would potentially have a 1a or 2a and 2a or 3a, making them much more competitive.

Agree that these three teams stand out. However, there are another 6-8 teams in the West that could beat any of them on a given night. NC West is deep with a lot of talent. Outside of those top 3, if you bring your B game next Friday, you could get crushed and go home.

I learned a lot time ago, boone weather only helps so much. Teams with depth can overcome the elements. NW Guilford did have space heaters on the sidelines last time it snowed in the playoffs. Probably 3 years ago ish?

Habich's ability to maximize his players' efforts speaks volumes about his skills. I think you’re onto something important. With the current ADM numbers, splitting the student population could allow a lot more things. How do you think the community would react to the idea of a second high school?

Historically, There has been teams that are used to snow and cold weather excel in playoff scenarios, while those not used to it can struggle.

Honestly, given the political makeup of watauga county, I doubt it'll happen, especially given the amount of money they approved for the current one. I do know some of the young folks on the western side of the county commute well over an hour each way. I feel like there should be a cap on drive time from a child's home to academic facility. Just my opinion but it is something county officials could mitigate.

Correct. It’s concerning to hear that some young people are spending over two hours each day just getting to and from school. This means less time for extracurricular activities, family, and homework. Implementing a cap on travel time could help alleviate some of these issues and allow students to focus more on their education if county officials buying into this idea.

computers have MC a 3- 4 td favorite, david / GOLIATH (massey)
no doubt the biggest spread week 2 in 4a
its like a mount airy spread
MC 4a 9 wat 4a 18
MC played a top 10 schedule
Wat played the #90 rated schedule in 4a
(per simmons)
ofcourse wasnt it the same last year
If the same team shows up that played at Hough (i saw that live)
then MC will travel home highly embarassed but if the team shows up
that put up these lofty rating numbers then all shud be fine and creek
wins by 3 scores like they are supposed to.

IF MC can run the ball and has some offense they will be fine. If they cant run they are DOA just like last year. Great defense can only take you so far. Watagua wins at home.

Hough will dominate Indy. May get ugly.

I feel like it will end as a two or three score game (14-17 points) with Indy hanging around until about the middle of the third quarter.

A strong run game and defense can take you far in the playoffs but I can’t make a call on the MC-Watauga game.

The problem with playing Watauga is they run a very unique offense. Especially at the 4a level. Not many 4a schools see the style of offense that Watauga runs. Around Charlotte most of those 4a schools are in spread and have athletes all over the field and they try to spread you out and get one on one matchups. Watauga is going to be very different than that and hard to prepare for in 1 weeks time. If MC learned something from last years game, then I think they can walk away with a rather comfortable victory. If they didnt then Watauga will grind it out and it will be a fight in a phone booth type game and come down to the wire.

They do a ton of different stuff off that double wing base. You just don't see a ton of teams play under center but then they put #4 back there in shot gun and they spread you out and let him kind of pick his lane. It's real effective if your not disciplined.

The bigger head scratcher was when Creek was on offense. Indy just got athletes in space on those small DBs and killed them. MC just couldn't get the ball to Black enough and couldn't sustain offense.

Wautaga also plays very clean and stay in front of the chains. Always in 3rd and short and converted 3 or 4 big 4th downs to keep drives alive.
