Grimsley vs Weddington

Not the first but easily the best of my lifetime.
Charlotte Football Insiders was speaking a few days ago how Charlotte Catholic and Weddington have a 25 mile radius to grab kids even ones that goes into South Carolina. Must be nice, but you want to cry about Public Schools. Every year you see the same schools in the Charlotte Metro Area win (Weddington, Catholic, Hough, Mallard Creek and Independence, now West Charlotte} While Harding, N Meck, East Meck, West Meck, Rocky River, Providence, Garinger, Ardrey Kell, Myers Park Struggle every year. Nobody was complaining when Charlotte Independence went on that 7 year run, Or Butler and Mallard Creek and Vance/Chambers was doing their thing. But as soon as the power switched to Gboro, now you want to complain!!!!

I get what you’re trying to say but it’s not really the same schools every year. Indy and West are coming off of a rough stretch that lasted about 10 seasons. Creek also had a little dry spell. I guess Hough has been a constant but we all know they stick out in this list for one big reason.

East Meck, Providence, AK, Myers Park, West Meck, Rocky River, and especially Harding have all had some form of success over the last 20 seasons. Garinger is the lone constant in having been sorry for longer than some of us have been alive.

As far as the transfer portal, the only time folks complain is when their team isn’t benefitting from it. Almost every school that’s ever won state has been accused of having a star player that probably shouldn’t have been playing at the school. It is what it is.

You just can’t stand that a team from Greensboro beats all of the Charlotte teams..lol
I’ve mentioned this over and over and over during the last few years. I have no Charlotte dog in the fight. So I really don’t care. What I don’t like is how Grimsley does things. For example being an allstar, transfer portal destination. The QBs mother going to court to insure her son gets his NILmoney. It’s gotten ridiculous. That’s why every year the same teams were fighting for the west this time of the year. I’ve followed high school ball for 60 years in multiple states and this is the worst I’ve seen it. It’s not going to stop. I hardly followed high school ball this year and will probably follow it even less next season. I mentioned in an earlier comment Grimsley’s under scheduling. Someone mentioned earlier that Grimsley is 17-1 against Charlotte schools. How many of those games were at Home vs on the road? I would venture to say if they had to travel at least as much as other teams they would not be 17-1. My guess is the underscheduling is on purpose to make sure that they have all those home games. Someone mentioned hating on Grimsley. That’s such a tired and overused word these days. I don’t hate on the Grimsley program. I just don’t respect it. And don’t even go back to the parochial schools playing in the NCHSAA. That would be the pot calling the kettle black. Grimsley a “public” school? In name only. The same could be said of Hough. Grimsley just uses the portal a little better. After 60 years, I’m retired.

I think it was a colder Forcast earlier in the week that put people off coming. It was much warmer than the last 2 week but people already made up their minds not to go. The Grimsley side was packed but many where just there to see a good game and not affiliated with the school.

You can call it whatever you like. I really don’t care. I believe they should have it State wide. They’re loaded with other schools players. I guess we can call it, the special curriculum player’s program 🤷🏾‍♂️😂 Go Whirlies!
I BET the same people complaining about Grimsley are the same people yelling "school choice". Guilford County is a great example of what school choice should look like. Guilford County has two high schools ranked tops in the nation and it is all part of the public school system. People want to say that sports in being put ahead of the academics, but at these academies the kids are getting a really good academic experience.

The real problem is that you aren't able to change with the times. Grimsley is definitely a public school, but they provide the players with an experience and opportunity that other schools don't. Page also has an academy, but look at where they are. In terms of NIL, these kids deserve any money they can get. People don't see the early morning workout sessions, money spent on outside position coaches, the cost to travel to camps.

I am a dirt bike guy. Kids have been making money racing motocross for decades. They are signing million dollar contracts at 16 years old.

And what is this "under scheduling" talk??? I believe they had their oppoment this coming week on their schedule early in the season. Also, how many good schools actually schedule other good schools, early in the season, that they may see later in the season??? That normally only happens in conference play.

Last night’s game reminded me of a game I still haven’t gotten over which was Butler/Grimsley west final a few years ago. Butler controlled the first half and had chances to put them away. The second half Grimsley exploded offensively like they did last night. The way the exploded was similar which was explosive pass and run plays. Once they get into space its a wrap. Lets see if they finish the season as they did back then. If they do I think they would be a top ten of all time NC team in my opinion.

My only gripe with Grimsley is for them to be loaded with talent they should be playing out of state teams to at least showcase the talent NC has to offer. To me it’s a bit shameful to get some of the best talent in the state only to beat up on NC teams with inferior talent. Weddington and Hough may participate in similar “portal” activities at least they will play other teams outside the state to test themselves.

Charlotte schools are on the boarder with SC so it is easy for them to schedule "out of state" schools. Mallard Creek is the only program that seems to actually travel and it doesn look like that has helped them much.

It has. The kids get the experience of playing out of state schools. But the big thing, is may not have helped record wise (as in consescutive unbeaten seasons and continually having home games in the playoffs...ahem), but they are willing to take the risk. Mallard Creek has been doing that for awhile. Then Hough, another portal school, played Rock Hill Northwestern this year and they've played Dutch Fork, Tommy Knott's team. But the comment the commenter made, that I'm replying to is just stating one of many excuses some of these folks have used (not sure about those who actually schedule the games), but if they really wanted to, they could find a way. If Mallard Creek could travel to Georgia or Ohio, teams in Greensboro could as well, I would think.

Creek schedule stiff competition because they’re an Undeniable team (Under Armor) It’s required under the contract. This is all new for Grimsley. (Winning) So they’re not used to people calling them out for more. Not used to winning. This to shall pass. Regarding the Creek, and what helps us. Stuff competition is not going away. We’ll be heading down to Grayson next year, who’s playing for the State title of Georgia next week. Our future is just as bright than any school in the state, Just fielded one of the best JV teams in school history. Also, no team in Greensboro has a winning record against us. Stop whining and enjoy the success. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Chambers went up to Richmond, Va and beat a great highland springs team 3 seasons ago. Butler went up to D.C. and played a nationally ranked St. John’s that same season. Grimsley can and should at least be scheduling teams in Va if they don’t want to go down to Sc or Ga.

Under scheduling to get a good seed? Honda, have you heard of RPI. 60% of the index is derived from your opponents win % and their Opponents win %. Schedule cupcakes and your RPI suffers. Ask Dudley.
How soon do you forget last year when a two loss Weddington got the #1 seed? And your ‘portal’ knowledge about Grimsley come largely from Pagepirate44 who is about the most anti-Grimsley voice there is. After 60 years, you’re not retired; you are just not relevant any longer. Enjoy the game, the competition and these great young athletes.

Oh yeah, Weddington beat Grimsley last year with their physicality. But guess who got physically whipped last night?

Ummmmmmm, if it isn't helping them win a championship it really isn't helping. And YOU are upset that Grimsley has been good enough to have home games throughout the playoffs. That is every teams goal...

Maybe you will get your wish next season, in terms of Grimsley playing an out of state school.

Unnecessary. There is plenty of competition in NC.

No Football player is going to Grimsley, just because of academics. If you believe that, let me get you the next winning power ball ticket for 20k 😂 They’re winning football games that’s it. Talk about clueless. They start taking L’s and kids will vacate faster than a zoo releasing skunks 🦨 into a food court. 🤷🏾‍♂️😂

They aren't "under scheduling". Where do you get that from??? You play the schools that will play you and the teams that are in your conference. Who would you like to see Grimsley play??? And keep in mind, out if state trips do not come without cost...

It wouldn’t say it’s necessary but it’s a good experience for the kids and it’s good for the state, NC schools competing against (and beating) elite out of state competition just draws more eyes to NC talent.

It is definitely part of the equation.

Weddington got absolutely shredded in the 2nd half. I called it, Faizon Brandon was the difference

In season play isn't what gets eyes on North Carolina. Camps, 7v7 tournaments. Those things get eyes on NC players. 5 of the top 50 recruites in the class of 2026 are from North Carolina. We get plenty of exposure outside of the actual season.

I was responding to Honda the Curmudgeon. I agree, only George Washington in Danville has a decent cachet. Richmond is three hours away and Georgia out of the question financially. Guilford County is struggling with a billion dollar bond to upgrade and build new schools. Seemingly expensive out of state trips for football aren’t good political moves. Districts like Wake and Meck are growing seemingly opening new schools every year. In Guilford, the newest school is Northern Guilford which is now nearly 20 years old. Our program is doing just fine and these attempts to criticize b/c we don’t play out of state schools is sorest of grapes.

It wasn't just Faizon. Weddington looked to be playing man no one could cover #1. He had three receiving TD's and another big 3rd down catch at the end of the game.

You’re just being obtuse at this point. Scouts are definitely showing up to see elite teams play each other, the 4&5 star player will always get their opportunities but those fringe guys can benefit from going to a state like GA and balling out against one of their top programs. No college team is bringing on talent based solely on their spring tape and 7 on 7 (read practice).

Greensboro’s finest aren’t showing up to Grimsley because they all want to go to Yale🤷🏾‍♂️😂 It’s Football 🏈 No different than going to Hough which is more than 60% white. I looked in the stands when we played them. I thought I was at an HBCU homecoming. Win and they will come. You really don’t have to recruit. Some schools do it better than others. Make it legal Statewide, and keep it moving.
