Grimsley at Weddington on Black Friday

For a guy that was a teacher and now the announcer at the school, you seem to be getting a little too big for your britches. Your comments lack grace and scream arrogance. We will see Friday and if you make it through and meet Butler, I hope you are singing a cautious tune. I forgot that you are playing Friday night.

Not really. Just been listening to Honda bash 336 schools for a long time and am giving him the business. Friday is going to be another nail biting war against Weddington and on the road to boot. I hope to see a Grimsley-Butler rematch in the regional final as I see them as the two best teams in the West.

Lack of grace? You must be a Catholic supporter 😛

Outting the announcer? Real graceful. You and Honda must be colluding.🤣

How did weddington lose to Marvin ridge? That blows my mind cause Marvin ridge wasn't good this year?

Two very good teams, well coached. If either wins out their runs over the past 5 years puts them on a level with any 4a run minus the Indy domination in the early 2000s

It’s a rivalry game. Weddington was split to form MR. The kids grow up playing in the same youth sports organization . It was MR senior night they wanted it more and Weddington took them lightly. No excuses. Yep Weddington is beatable . Lost 2 and did not deserve the #1 , but hey that’s the system for now. We’ve had to travel all over the state when we shoulda been at home in the past… it happens

I really respect the quality of the Weddington program. I remember 7-8 years ago when they defeated Eastern Guilford(coached by Page’s Doug Robertson)for a 3A championship To make the transition to 4A while still playing at a high level tells an outsider all they need to know. Looking forward to seeing your facilities for the first time Friday night.

With Grimsley's lack of defense during the playoffs over the last two seasons, teams may or may not beat them, but it's always going to be close against Grimsley. In my own opinion, if Grimsley had a playoff defense and there weren't thoughts swirling around from multiple sources, regarding how they do things over there (aka; transfer portal), I could maybe respect them more as an elite team. Are they very good? Yes, absolutely. Are they elite like the Butler, Independence, Mallard Creek, Page team with Sommers and Wake Forest teams were? No. Will Weddington win? They could or they may not. But one thing's for sure. It'll definitely be close against Grimsley.
Every team has transfer players (Every) if you believe that weddington doesnt your lying to yourself . Can weddington slow TA/AT/MS !
Can Grimsley lock up KJ !
Weddington looks disciplined by the book
Weddington QB is going to be key
Grimsley DL will be key
Grimsley showed that there for real against Hough
Showed they can adjust & rise to the occasion
Weddington has lost 2 games to teams thats no where explosive as Grimsley . Can weddington find holes in Grimsley defense ...
Butler showed you how to handle weddington
11-2 vs 13-0 ...
You have to pick your poison on this one .

The problem Grimsley creates with two big time outside receivers (TA/AT) that cannot be effectively covered by man defenses is you have to have safety help over the top. Whirlies have two slot receivers which have to be covered as well. That leaves six defenders to stop MS(2000yds/39tds). Effective run game forces DCs to put seven in box and man single cover 6’3” D1 commits with each over 1000 TDs/13tds. Grimsley is going to score 35- 40 points every night. Can the opposition , who is conservative by nature, score with them? We’ll see.

Weddington beat Southeast in 2018 for the 'Ship and Northern beat Weddington in the 3-AA title game in 2014 . Weddington is always a tough out. They gave Grimsley all they wanted last year.

I think Weddington won’t have a problem scoring on Grimsley, I think they will use more of a ball control attack to shorten the game. It allows their defense to rest while keeping that explosive Grimsley offense on the sideline.

Defensively I would show some 3-3-5 looks and try and keep everything in front of them. I would try and show different looks. Weddington won’t stop that offense but they can slow them down. Its a tall task and won’t be easy.

Shoulda beat Northern both times too 😡

Weddington and Grimsley have one common opponent. That loss to Marvin Ridge was a head scratcher, but considering how they've been rivals, isn't totally surprising.

Both Weddington and Grimsley played Sun Valley with similar results. Grimsley beat Sun Valley 56-24 (+32). Weddington defeated Sun Valley 42-3 (+39).

Like last year, both Weddington and Grimsley will get their points. Being at home and if Weddington doesn't have the turnovers like Hough had last week or the blocked kicks, like they had last year against Grimsley, they could get a win.

Either way, this should be a tough, close game.

Calpreps and Massey concur

Weddington wont be able to run up the middle at all they tried all year long & after 2 or 3 tries they always bounce it outside ! There DT is faster enough to run sideline to sideline . The RPO option they use wont effect anything ! The 6'2 Star/Nickel for grimsley is long & fast with more then acceptional ball skills . They have a 6'3 Corner that can play man or zone ! Weddington has one wr with decent speed #8 ! They will flip flop the wr's in the slot. Weddington has a habit that standsout every game ! Its like a sore thumb . Can they stop grimsley ! Can grimsley stop weddington .
This is a 4 quarter game ; Dont be like hough and throw your spade first chance you get ..

Its called watching film . Tendenices that standout the first 5 mins of there film . 704 teams not like that anymore face it ! Hough defense way better then weddington D . Come friday we see what the excuse is . 8 STRAIGHT 704 TEAMS THEY BEAT...

Football is about matchups.
I tell people this all the time.

I think the key for Weddington is grind the ball on offense. That is demoralizing to opponents, keeps the defense fresh, does not allow the opponents offense to get into rhythm. Every possession gets more important and checkers becomes chess. Defensively, Weddington needs to get big pressure on the QB and stop the big play especially vertically. Containing big gains over the top is huge.

Andy Capone has did a great job elevating the great program he took over frm Tim Carson. Darryl Brown is an excellent football guy and he has been a head coach for nearly twenty years so this game will be a battle from Monday through Friday.

He has habit of using football math which is something you shouldn’t do because football is about matchups.
Math Lmao 🤣 you really think they match up well on the outside & in the slot🤣. Love the loyalty for the 704! You know as well as the rest of the state that #1 seed wasnt earned ! But what will be earned friday is another L again. Run your QB at your own risk . Quick business trip to the 704

Grimsley has been on a good run but they have not been dominant in the late rounds of the playoffs. Seven points or less in wins over Butler, Hough twice, and Weddington by one last season. Thought Butler lost the game more than Grimsley won in 2020 and Weddington had no favors last year on some key calls. Throw in a loss to Porter Ridge in 2021. Granted, this appears to be the best Grimsley team yet.

But they still haven’t developed a playoff defense. They’ve had to outscore everyone. So, no, they haven’t been dominant.

Grimsley is 61-3 over the past five seasons and undefeated in two state championship games. Two one point losses to eventual champ East Forsyth and a still puzzling loss to Porter Ridge.
If that doesn’t qualify for your dominance definition, it may need some revision.

It was earned or they wouldn’t be there. According to current ratings, they earned it. If others believe they didn’t earn it then change the system.

What’s amazing is they’ve done that without a playoff defense. New Bern exposed them last year. If they don’t outscore opponents they’re in trouble. You talk about the 704. Well the 704 has had no trouble scoring on them. So yes, they aren’t dominant. Not against top tier competition
The Indy, Butler, Mallard Creek and Wake Forest teams had defenses that could be and were dominant even in the playoffs. Grimsley’s not there yet..

I dont care if its a .5 they won This year there better on defense & you cant get into a shootout with them . Its always sonething veat hough ! Hough not the best team ! Beat weddington ! Weddington wasnt the best team. How well weddington matches up not in there favor ! . 8-2 & #1 seed gtfoh . 🤣 The good teams beat them this year . But yet they get #1. Well they got a focused grimsley team coming to play friday. 8-0 & against the 704 is dominant .

So, according to your standards, beating Rolesville 63-34 was not dominant because they gave up 34?

I am 100% in support of changing the system used this season. Grimsley followed by either Hough or Butler at the two seed.
I still think the easiest fix would be to apply the RPI differentiator to all the 10-0 conference champs followed by 9-1s and then the 8-2s, etc.

I initially wrote they have not been dominant in my 10:39am post. He merely agreed with me. They dominated Rolesville but I think we all focus on the results of late round playoff games.

Go back to MaxPreps. Use the margin of victory but cap it at 21 points. If you win by 70 it is the same as 21. The complaint was teams were running up the score so that factor was removed when it should have only been adjusted.

I am fine if they use MaxPreps and combine it with Massey, Simmons, and some others.

I do not like the 10-0 record being the determining factor. Mooresville and Watauga were 10-0. Using that method makes not playing strong non conference opponents more likely when a team should be rewarded for playing a strong team from outside their area, ie Butler and Grimsley v Rolesville, Weddington v Dutch Fork (down this season), Richmond v Butler, et al.

Grimsley definitley deserved the one seed in my opinion.
