Not so awfully long ago the East Lincoln-Lincolnton matchup was written off by many of us as a win, even before the game was played, but then Coach Byus, Et al., showed up in 2005.

Since then, we’ve won five out of thirteen matches, with them beating us the last four games over the past three seasons. Certainly enough to make me tired of us losing to them, but I was tired of losing to them when they were only up one game, let alone three, and they are set to go up on us by four games, this year. East Lincoln hasn't lost in twenty-one games and is ranked number one in some of the 2A polls.

I doubt if any of the Mustang faithful give very much attention to what I post. Frankly, if I was one of them I wouldn’t pay any attention to me, either, but if it ever crosses your mind that us Lincolnton sorts long for the days when winning against you was easy, let me tell you there is at least one, namely me, who doesn’t. As aggravated and disgusted as I get when the Wolves lose, especially to the Mustangs, I enjoy the contests between these two more now than I did before Coach Byus, Et al., came. Before, it wasn’t something to get excited about, but now, it is. Speaking of Coach Byus, Et al, some of the Et al’s [sic], leave posts, once in a while, but not as often as before.

Most everybody in this area knows the key players and offensive formations, particularly East Lincoln’s. I’m not going to say anything about cross county rivalry or something like “come on up, neighbor, and have a good time”, not meaning to be inhospitable, but you’ve heard it all before. I would mention, though, this game will be in Lincolnton and it will probably draw a big crowd.

All comments and predictions are appreciated, even the ones I don’t like.

Mr. Lincolnton,

Please tell us little about your Lincolnton team this year?

If you have any stats from prior years I would love to see that. As we discussed in the past, I do remember one memorable game they played for Western regional final in 2007.

As a east lincoln guy, I'm excited for this week... This should be the mustangs first big test. Lincolnton looks fast, and not enough can be said about their three headed monster... 19, 11, 22. Any team with these three are going to win a lot of games

This is usually the week I go to the beach, but marked this game on my calendar as a must see game...(of course my wife is making me take her on a cruise to make up for it)...believe this will decide 1 and 2 in the conference....come on Friday..

Sportsnut, I wish I had some stats to give you on this series. I've got newspaper clippings on some but I left them in this drawer or that one but I can give a couple of estimations that would come close:

-Lincolnton is averaging about 250 yards a game rushing. They are still a run first team but they have incorporated the pass. After the last two games I'd say they're probably averaging a hundred yards a game. This average could be misleading. In the North Lincoln game and in the South Point game I'm pretty sure they were under a hundred yards passing.

-The Wolves have made use of the shotgun, this year. Sometimes, they will line up with the quarterback and two halfbacks or a halfback and fullback to his right and left, with two wide receivers and a tight end creating, of course, an unbalanced line, I suppose it's a typical shotgun formation, It seems peculiar for us, but it's fun to watch. Sometimes there is only a single back.

They will still line up in the I formation with the quarterback under center and try and punch a hole in the defense. If they get in red zone, mostly inside the ten, they might use the T formation.

I maybe off on this one but I believe Lincolnton looks to take something from other teams offensive formations. Particularly from 2008 through 2011, the dominant offense was the option with the two wingbacks that they got from South Point and Shelby. The shotgun they're using this year probably came from watching East Lincoln. The I formation which has been used here off and on for a long time might have been picked up more recently from games with Thomasville and the T formation which has been used quite bit up until this season probably came from playing Tarboro.
Coach Gibson, has been pretty open about wanting to spread he ball around, more and he's doing it.

-I'm thinking this will be the forty-fifth time these two have met with Lincolnton leading the series winning about two thirds of the games which would be about 70%...As mentioned earlier, since Coach Byus, East Lincoln leads the series winning eight out of thirteen games which is about 60%.

-In the 2012 game at East, which was played in the rain, Mustangs quarterback Garrett Young went down with a knee injury in the first quarter. East would bring in freshman quarterback Chaz Surratt who would pass for over a hundred yards. East would go on to win 13-8...G.Young would later return and lead his team to a state title against Tarboro, that year.

-The last time the Wolves beat the Mustangs was 2011, at Lincolnton. The score was 55-35.

-The first game coach Byus coached against Lincolnton was 2005 with the Wolves winning 35-21.

-The first time East beat Lincolnton was 1977. I thought the score was 14-0 but an East Lincoln alumnus said it was 14-7. I still think we got shut out. I'll have to go to the library and find out.

-in 1974 (uncertain about the year) the Wolves standout back was Scott Cloninger, (Lincolnton head coach until last year). I also heard he (Coach Cloninger), as a student, lived in what was once called a freedom of choice zone ( I don't know if they still have those or not as I don't go to school, anymore) which gave a student the opportunity to attend one school or the other and that the bus to East Lincoln would come by his house. Instead he would walk up to the main highway to catch the Lincolnton bus. I'm not sure if that's correct. I'll try and remember to ask him.

-The worst injury in an East Lincoln-Lincolnton game was 1978 (again, going off memory), at East Lincoln. A Lincolnton lineman, and in my opinion one of our best lineman, suffered an injury to either his neck or spine or both while making a tackle... I don't know if that player would want me to say his name so I not going to. If anyone reading is old enough to remember this game, just to tweak the memory, the Wolves quarterback was Stanley Goodson and Kenneth Herndon was a standout running back. Also, long time Newton-Conover coach and current Alexander Central coach Nick Bazzle was a key player for the Mustangs. The Wolves won but I can't remember the score.
-I believe the first time these two played was 1972

If anyone has other information please feel free to set me straight on this as I am too old to have an ego.

*msc117, you're always welcome, here.

Mr. Lincolnton,

The shotgun they are using this year is the same shotgun Maiden started using in 2005 when Vantrel, Tommy and Petey McClain ran that offense.

Some of the coaches there in L-Town coached for Maiden that year and from what I understand wanted to use that same triple threat shotgun offense with the three studs they have this year.

Hey thanks, GrizzlyDevil. Being from Lincolnton it's strange seeing our team using it. I shouldn't be surprised to find out that they got it from Maiden.

Speaking of coaches that are here who have coached at Maiden, I know one of them. He is a good guy and a good addition to the Lincolnton staff. I also know his Mother.

Good luck, Friday night, in the Devils bowl. One of our old prognosticators is saying Maiden will beat us this year and to add to our woes we have to go there.

Good history lesson there, in 2005 Byus' 1st year EL was actually up at half, 3 consecutive turnovers in the 3rd qtr and before we knew it Lincolnton was up by 2 scores, all I remember from that game is a fan screaming at Byus, " hey Byus your playstation plays don't work in these parts", classic, actually Lincolnton has used the shotgun sets with Cloninger, I want to say in 2008 they tried the spread set, had a fast QB, but didn't stay with it, and I believe in 2010 one of the deciding plays against Carver at the end of the game was out of the gun. Enough with that stuff, EL replaced 8 on defense and 4 on offense, still learning as they go and still a long way to go, Lincolnton has a very good nucleus from last year back and incorporated the forward pass, offense is very similar to the Zach Gibson, CJ Wilson and Brewery days now known as Littlejohn, Demory and Easter now, defense is fast and active, one thing Lincolnton has always struggled with EL is defending the pass but have a good group of defensive backs this year. Going to be a great game, good luck and see you Friday

CM3, Lincolnton didn't use the shotgun with any frequency, like this year. If they used it near the end of the Carver game it was out of desperation.

I'm awfully sorry about the the playstation comment, I don't know what would have driven our fan to say such an odious thing. Hopefully, the string of wins have helped you and him to heal from it.

East looks more vulnerable this year than last. This is a chance for them to show they have what it takes to be a champ contender again. Haven't played the teams to prove anything up until now. Time for the new guys to step it up and if any game can get them fired up it's Lincolnton. We'll see. Can't wait.

Should be a great this week in Lincoln County.I predict East with a 27 to 21 victory.

Going to be a big crowd. I look for that big stadium to be filled on both sides Friday.

Lincolnton's offense being much more opened up this year could cause problems against an unproven East defense. I think they will score 21-35 points. As always they will need to limit the big plays from East. They seemed to get a little demoralized last year as they would spend 30 minutes driving the field while east would trot out and score on two plays. Mixing the pass in will change things whether for better or worse.

As for East, The line play on both sides will be crucial. They don't have to beat Lincolnton up front (didn't beat them last year IMO) but can't be manhandled. The D needs to get some penetration and the O line has to give Chazz SOME protection. He doesn't need a wall around him to operate but I worry that a good D-line would have a field day in the back field. East is playing a lot of guys both ways this year which shows a lack of depth. East has a history of improving dramatically from mid season onward so we'll see.

Our defense had difficulty catching South Point's quarterback. As elusive as he was, Surratt will be even harder to contain. To have any chance Lincolnton has to contain East on at least some of their possessions.

Mr. Lincolnton, The first year of the rivalry was 1974 with Lincolnton winning 30-7.

In 1975 they would prevail 14-0 and 1976 the Wolves again won 19-0.

The first win for the Mustangs would come in 1977 with a 13-0 outcome, which may have made the Wolves mad as they won 54-0 in '78 and 22-6 in '79.

You're always welcome.I emailed you an excel file to give you my resource for this information.

Cheerduck, thank you for the help. You are a wealth of information. My email wouldn't open today.

Should be a great this week in Lincoln County.I predict East with a 27 to 21 victory.

SHS Lion, thanks for posting. It's always good to hear from a fan who typifies what Shelby and Shelby football really are. Good luck to you guys. It looks like another title is in the making for y'all.

Thank you sir and good luck to the Wolves this Friday night. I had the privilege of playing in that 2005 season in that offense with Maiden and seeing as two if my old coaches are now at Lincolnton I'll be sure to pull for you guys.

Well that is until you make the trip to our house. ...and as far as beating you guys, well, let's just say I'll be surprised if we don't have to burn a timeout because we don't know how many players we have on the field.

Great post LINCOLNTON, you are always a class act. I would like to here from all those L-town posters that refused to believe that these days were coming. The strength seems to have shifted greatly at this point and now all those old L-Town posters who never gave EL a chance, seem to be MIA and writing off the Wolves as soon as this game is merely mentioned. Did those fans disappear from the boards once they no longer dominated the Conference or even the County?

I will be at this one and can't wait. Should be a good one, but I believe EL runs away with it after the half.

EL 42-21

I won't write off the Wolves. I wouldn't call it a power shift. EL finally got the right coach to know what to do with the athletes down that way. Now East has been really good for about 10 years, but Lincolnton is still the same consistently solid program as always. This is most likely the last time having to play you guys with Chazz at QB this week. Thank God for that. Better enjoy it while it lasts. Those type athletes don't move into your area everyday. I definitely think EL has the better team, but I'll go out on a limb here and say home field advantage, nasty weather and a little extra motivation from these last few years will be enough for the upset.

Lincolnton 29-28

GrizzlyDevil, thanks for the well-wish, we will need it, Friday night. Also, hats off to you for having played on the 2005 Maiden team who was indeed a very tough squad.

Lone Stranger, thanks for saying something. Our regular posters are still around. Some of them might say something before Friday. Losing to East Lincoln is a hard pill to swallow but we have to take the bad with the good. If you're a Mustang fan I know you've enjoyed their success and there is still more to come but like my fellow poster, and a famous general, once said, "all glory is fleeting"... I'm glad you'll be coming up to see the game. There's nothing like looking forward to Friday night, particularly when you know your team has what it takes.

LTown Wolves, I'm with you. As tough as it will be for us to win I always think we can do it even when everything else says otherwise.

Lincolnton , great to read a post of yours, always a classy, intelligent post...

You wont find a nicer individual across this state than ol Lincolnton......

Good luck bud

Thank you, my friend. It's always good to hear from you. It takes men like you to tolerate guys like me. All the best to the Lions.

How about this weather, where is the sun? Could be a different approach by both teams with what they are calling for weather wise, both teams employ the spread but have the ability to work out of multiple sets to reach the same outcome, should be interesting. EL has been very fortunate over the past ten years, with some very impressive QB's, from Schram, Brady, Wilson, Perry, Young to Surratt. With that said, Lincolnton has boasted some unbelievable athletes themselves and this year is no different. The way they are using Easter this year puts a lot of pressure on the defense to know where he is, and looks like 22 has shed some pounds and a little quicker from last year. Littlejohn is a great athlete and strong armed for a young kid. Question is which defense can contain the other offense long enough to win the game? This game has decided the conference championship since 2005, not saying that is the case this year with the emergence of West Caldwell and Beam at Newton but definitely if the past holds true this game has big implications on the conference outcome and playoff seeding. Good luck and can't wait for this one, wind, rain or shine I know both teams are excited about the opportunity. Good luck

I always thought East should have had a few more victories from the 80-90s, but just did not have anything to show for it on the scoreboard.

Turning my attention to Lincolnton. Years ago, Richard Smith would come into the locker room and tell us that one day we would play an opponent in which we were just outclassed in every facet of the game. He would then say today is not the day. He had looked at the film and if we play our game and do not turn the ball over we had a chance to win the game. He could inspire and motivate a group of individuals to believe as a team that they could win any game. I hope Coach Gibson will do the same thing on Friday night.

SL, you are so right. He had gone to school with my oldest brother; when JJ died in February, Lincolnton was working the evening of the visitation, but used his break to stand in a long line and then shared a few stories with me.

Thank you Sasha. I felt privileged to get to attend and to say hello to the family. JJ was a loved and respected person. I can remember his face and voice, even now, as well as I could the last time I talked to him.

A long time ago, a counselor at the old Lincolnton Rec Center strung a net across the basketball court and let some of his friends from college play tennis. A bunch of the other kids wanted to play basketball. The shuffleboard court was being painted and I walked through the wet paint to show my disapproval.

When I came back the next day the director banned me for a week for messing up the paint. I ask her why she thought it was me and she said "no one, here, including all the children and staff have feet as big as yours".
JJ, was standing beside me and he couldn't stop laughing. For the rest of that summer he would remind me about my big feet. To get to see him laugh that much was worth getting banned from my favorite hangout for a week.

This started before Chazz and his brother came along. I agree that the coaching stepped up but, but I also believe that a group of kids came through there that paved the way and showed the others that EL could play against anyone and win. Once EL got past the mental aspect of the game and quit accepting defeat, they were able begin to show what they could truly do. There is a fire that is in the players now that wasn't there and it started to grow and show its face about 10 years ago. Once they got that first taste of a championship, it was on. With or without Chazz, as long as they keep their coaches and that fire, they should be just fine.

Still can't believe most of the L-Town posters are in hiding. I'm sure they will start to surface as EL catches a down season and they truly believe they can win again.

No way would I miss this one. I know L-Town has some talent this year and I expect a great game. I have always enjoyed this game at your house. I remember my first EL vs Lincolnton game was at your stadium and Goo was the RB along with Josh Atkins I believe at QB. I had just transferred from West Meck and never even heard of Lincolnton HS. The atmosphere was electric as EL got destroyed that night.

I hope EL slaughters them, but I really do enjoy both teams. Good luck to both teams and I hope it's an injury free game. GO EL!!!!!!!

Lone Stranger, I'm one of these sorts that never remembers anything useful like how to screw in a light bulb or how to drive a nail but I got a pretty good memory for text. Might you have posted under a different screen name several years ago. This poster I'm thinking about had attended West Mecklenburg at one time. He mentioned that on one of his posts some years back. The poster I'm thinking about was very active on NC Preps during the 2008 and 2009 season. Not that it matters. Just curious.

Lincolnton, my man, glad to see you're still on top of your game! Wishing the best of luck to you this week. Interested to hear when the game will be played. EL probably wants the field as wet as possible.
Just kidding! Hope both teams play well and safely. But hoping that danged howling and bell ringing are frequent and continually irritating.

OC, it's always good to hear from you, my friend. I hope you are well. I thought about you, yesterday. I saw pictures of the Triad area after they were hit hard with heavy rain. It rained pretty hard, here, last night.
LOL, on the wet field thing, they're pretty sensitive about it and I shouldn't antagonize them but they're going to hate us anyway. Most of them don't know it but their stadium is named after a Lincolnton person. I'll pull that rabbit out of the hat, later.
Good luck to the Bulldogs. I'll be rooting for you.

May wish to check that statement about conference championship between you two, don't believe so in 2014...

Who won the game between EL and Lincolnton? Who won the conference?

From my information, the game will be played Friday, regardless of the weather. But you guys know as well as I do, anything can happen.

Ok, let me rephrase, whomever has won this game since 2005 has gone on to win the conference championship. That is what I meant by my statement, just not worded right. Thanks for the info Wolf.

Lincolnton High School will now require all fans attending the game to travel in an ARK and enter the stadium 2 by 2....... NOAH just texted me and said he sees no problem playing in the little misting drizzle of 3-5 inches of rain that is predicted for tonight.

MAN UP Lincoln County.....
Put on your life jacket, get in the pool and lets play some high school football!
#didnotworkforkingsmountainvs.shelby.....lol

Maybe you should name the one's writing off the Wolves. The Wolves fans I've been around always believe we have shot at winning. Although sometimes you know things have to bounce your way because of talent. MIA.........huh....sometimes things in life have priority over a high school message board.. Sometimes it is fun just to sit back and read it can be entertaining.
