8 Classes

That is crazy and dumb, even Big Old Texas only have 6 Classifications. I can see 5 or maybe 6, but no more....Jesuzzz!!!

Texas has six high school football classifications:

  • Class 6A: 2,225 and above
  • Class 5A: 1,300–2,224
  • Class 4A: 545–1,299
  • Class 3A
  • Class 2A
  • Class 1A

I agree. 8 is too much for little ole North Carolina. The state champions will be a little less impressive now. But hey, let's make everyone happy and give everyone a fair shot. That's the world we live in now.

P.S. - I'm not going to lie, if we happen to win a title during this alignment, I'll still be jumping for joy.

Will they be re-classed based off numbers... Or will other factors be involved like the free lunch bs

Be interesting to see when and where all the State Championship games be played at.

Here's what I am thinking ...

1A 1-400
2A 401-600
3A 601-750
4A 751-900
5A 901-1150
6A 1151-1500
7A 1501-1900
8A 1901+

Realignment will be like slicing a pizza. Some slices will be larger than others!! 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕

If you did that, it would be something like this

1A - 52 schools
2A - 56 schools
3A - 43
4A - 57
5A - 62
6A - 52
7A - 52
8A - 54

I don't know all of the "non-sport" playing schools. But this would be close. The only one you'd have to even out would be the 3A.

Just a very rough idea ... Back to the ol' drawing board on this ... Will need to adjust 3A, 4A, and 5A ... I am not attempting to put together conferences! Not yet anyway ...

I wonder how this adjustment will help ...

3A 601-800
4A 801-1000
5A 1001-1200
6A 1201 -1500

Of course, ranges for 1A 2A, 7A, and 8A remain the same.

BleedBurnsBlue, I am not sure where you are getting your numbers from, however, I do like your insight!!!

I just took them from the ADM numbers they provided a few weeks back.

If you were going to go 8. They should have just changed the bylaw to allow subdivision in all sports. That would make the playoffs equitable and make it easier to create conferences with few split leagues.

I agree w/ Six total classes...but don't like your splits.
If you have 1500 kids in your ADM #s....you can find some players - even if you aren't recruiting.
I think:
6a: 2200 plus
5a: 1750-2199
4a: 1250-1749
3a: 750-1249
2a: 450-749
1a: under 450
...or these numbers could vary depending on the number of teams that fall into each caterory overall. The higher the population....there is naturally more competition. 1a won't have the same amount of teams a 4 or 5a classification will have so no sense in trying to have 50-54 schools in each classification and break the numbers down that way.
*I think all private schools (if allowed to play in the league at all) should be made to play one level up for their reported ADM numbers.
**No more dropping of classifications; this (example) would be the numbers and once locked into a classification you are in it until next realignment.

Not that it matters but I was hoping for Football only conferences. No chance in hell they do that now. Follow the money.... Always follow the money.
We had Big and Small classes A and AA for a long time and we basically have it the same but worded different. Think of how many playoff games and locations this will create. If it looks like a pig and smells like..... well you know.

You would have uneven classes going with this.

1A - 69
2A - 82
3A - 136
4A - 73
5A - 37
6A - 31

The same amount of playoff games. 4 x 64 = 256 which is the same as 8 x 32 = 256. Same amount of teams make the playoffs, same amount of games.

The state title games are not a big profit maker.

Remember the coaches for 1A in spring 2001 were the ones that pushed for subdivided playoffs. It was a small group from eastern NC that started it up. As a 4A AD told me, all the coaches will want it now and they voted it in. The NCHSAA never liked the subdivided aspect.

If you were to do six classes, here's a better way of balancing things out ...

1A 1-450
2A 451-700
3A 701-900
4A 901-1200
5A 1201-1700
6A 1701+

We can all forget about it. It's 8 classes. What would be nice, is if it is 7 classes of traditional schools and 1 class of charter schools. More than likely it won't be that way though.

Yeah, the charters and other non-FB schools are going to have a big impact on the smallest class. The most logical, snap decision is to give them their own group but I think the NCHSAA is gun shy right now.

I know of at least one current 1A coach that wants to remove that extra week that got added after subdividing was ended. We may have to go back to some classes not having as many rounds. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. The days of 5-6 and 4-7 or less teams in the playoffs need to stop unless there are extenuating and rare circumstances.

We had 2 win teams though out the classes this year. We will continue to have them. 1a for sure.

To me this is a disservice to the smallest football playing schools. Not enough of them to have a playoff bracket so they will combine 1a/2a playoffs. That goes against the entire reason for expanding the number of classifications.....

I wish 1a would go up to 80 instead of 64.
That would help a lot. Probably take another vote.
