My take on Shelby / W Lincoln game:
This was one of the toughest Rd 1 games - a 9-2 vs a 8-3.
West Lincoln was physical, determined, and gritty. They hit four trap plays for 54, 42, 29, and 20 yards, respectively. They also ran a triple option on the opening play for 18 yards on a QB keeper. Their other 38 rushes netted 82 yards (2.16 ypc), with the longest run of 7 yards. Their passing game missed a sure TD on their opening drive, when they dropped a pass in the endzone, and then they missed a short FG attempt. They ended 0-6 passing with 2 interceptions thrown.
Defensively, they tried everything...all-out blitzes, delayed blitzes, safety blitzes, stunts, etc. They gang-tackled and played to the whistle.
Their return game was good (#3), but their kicking game was a weakness as they missed a short FG, didn't attempt a PAT, had several short punts and kickoffs.
Overall, a heavy-Senior team that had tough luck drawing Shelby and having to travel in Rd 1 after a very good 9-2 regular season.
For Shelby, the running game was decent, but it was obvious that Shelby thought their real advantage was in the passing game...hence why Shelby only rushed the ball 14 times while throwing 32 passes. The RBs rushed 10 for 49, a respectable 4.9 ypc.
The long ball and the short passes were open, but WL did a good job of covering the mid-range passes.
Shelby's Kicker was perfect on the night, nailing 2 FGs and 3 PATs, and the punter never had a punt returned and was able to pin WL back deep several times.
