West Charlotte at Erwin

I would think West Charlotte would be a heavy favorite. Erwin has had a great season and do have some weapons, not sure if they have enough for West Charlotte though. The fact that WC has over twice as many students to choose from makes a difference as well.

Erwin will have trouble on defense. Their offense is very good with a big line, steong armed QB and fast RB, but their Achilles heel has always been there defense even though it's improved this season.

WC offense is their weakness. Contain and don't get caught over pursuing. They have the athletes to add a defense and special teams score as well. Adapting to the cold will make any passing that much harder.

What does the student population have to do with it? Erwin's one defeat came at the hands of Mountain Heritage, a 1A school.

Think he was just pointing out that WC has 2300+ kids and will be 8a(highest qualification) next year but yet playing in 3a
We had a student pop of 1,400 when the last classification was done. In fact, we don't even have 2,300 now, it's about 2,000. The CMS Athletic Director added 300 to the number for potential student body growth that will probably occur over the next 4 - 5 years.

Myers Park has the highest student pop in all of NC, have for some years. Along with parents and supporters with significant wealth and they're not even in the playoffs. Heck, their booster club budget is about $1.1 million dollars year over year.

Win or lose I'm definitely proud of Erwin and what they did this season. They should be good again next year too. They lose their line and a really good receiver but return a sophomore qb that has 3000yds passing and 36td's to just 4 interception and his go to receiver Reynolds. Erwin's rb is really good but very soft too. He gets hurt every time the wind blows. I like the jr replacement much better anyways.

As for the West Charlotte game I really don't know much about them. Looking at their record they seem to be really good defensively and they have put up some points too. Erwin usually out athletes teams with our passing game but that will not be the case this week. We will have to play a very good game to have a chance. Like crestrulz said, one thing that might help is the weather. Driving almost 3 hrs to play in 20° weather will suck for them. It will also slow our passing game down so who knows. My heart says Erwin 35 WC 28. My brain says WC 28 Erwin 14

You should definitely be proud of them just as I'm proud of West Charlotte. Many of our kids deal with a lot of adversity.

They had over 2200 as of a couple weeks ago. 100% positive on that. There was no adding numbers, thats not how the numbers are turned in. I was told during last classifications they had 1600, not 100% on that.

They simply will not accept that. Said it a million times. WC played 4A with 3A numbers for nearly a decade. WC wanted to be a 4A school and stayed 4A with 3A numbers before last realignment. The school enrollment was capped while new school being built, now that the new school is open the enrollment is growing quickly last two years. This was highly unexpected as most did not want to go to WC the past 20 years and now its changed an families want to attend. Every sport at WC is struggling right now besides football. Guess numbers don't matter except for football.

You're 100% wrong. I am a very actively engaged alum and booster. I spoke with one of the assistant principals about the numbers prior to them being released and the current number is 2,012. I soke with the Principal about the numbers this past Friday night at the game and she confirmed it to be 2,012. Having first hand knowledge of the previous ADM for the current 3A classification being 1,400 based on athletic related business I was involved in with the previous AD.

Not sure where you're getting your information from but it's inaccurate.

That game still stings. Erwin would be 13-0 right now had the not fumbled in the red zone with minutes to go. Heritage is a hell of team this year though. They have a legit chance to win it all in 1A. I think what MACFAN was saying is WC is much bigger school so they have a lot more kids to pull from. It doesn't mean a smaller school is not as good, just at a disadvantage in that aspect.

Student population in an urban school doesn't mean that amount is eligible to play nor does it exclude the amount of young ladies which our students t population is more females than males. There are a TON of obstacles to deal with in an urban school that has to be dealt with. Heck, bad grades, unstable parenting, unstable home environments, students being the oldest sibling so they can't play athletics because they have to go home after school to take care of the younger sibling(s), homelessness and much, much, much more. I've even known of coaches and teachers who've voluntarily had to help pay rent and/or utilities for the parents of some of the kids' families.

Despite all of the above, I'm proud of Coach Greiner being able to keep the kids focused, hungry, humbled and centered.

Agree, I said i didn't know about last reclassification numbers but do remember they where higher than the 2 Asheville schools because it was talks about the reason they were higher classification than WC on the boards.
As far as this year's numbers, those numbers came directly from both the West Charlotte school secretary and was connected to the registar to confirm( over a property in the area and wanted to know numbers). So if it's inaccurate, the schools info is inaccurate. I'll leave it be at that but if you want to confirm, talk directly with the person in charge of attendance, the registar.

So what classification do you think WC should be next year?

exactly....LOL don't know what this talk of speculative admin numbers is - smh.
Bottom line....it is a big deal...unless 3a teams start getting 1a teams to play in the playoffs, and 4a teams have to play local D2 college teams in the HS playoffs, etc.

Right....AND if you have those specific problems....football (or any sport) shouldn't be at the top of your list of priorities. Those problems should not change one bit of where you play HS sports anymore than a higher number of suicides at wealthier HSs should change it.
I have never heard the retort: we have a lot more girls than boys....so that is one reason/ justification why we get to play a class lower (or two) than we should be at.

Wasn't West Charlotte a powerhouse in football at one time. I don't know much about them but their name is very similar.

Does it really matter how many students West Charlotte has? I mean it’s not like they’ve been dominating 3A and winning consecutive championships like Catholic did. They’ve been bounced in the third round the last 3 seasons and will not win it this year so what’s really the problem?

We were absolutely a power for decades. What changed? Neighborhood school assignments caused too much poverty in one school. Re-segregation.

You tell me the problem. Who has mentioned anything about there being a problem about where we're classed? Not an issue for WC. As for dominating 3A, the focus has not been dominating anything. There is a plan for us getting back to where we once were and it's right on target.

Yeah, it matters. When some of the teams they beat have half as many students. It matters to them.
