Welcome to the real world. Great opportunity to teach them early. I work with these kids on a daily bases, no matter from what school they attend. I treat my kids the same exact way. Coached my oldest when he was in middle school. He was horrible and put forth no effort. I let him know it, and gave him the tools to be successful. He got it! I have heard from 100's of kids that I've worked with through out the years from Atlanta & Charlotte that thank me for being tough with them. So please stop!

What benefit is it by lying to these kids, with the everyone gets a trophy mentality. Within 2 to 3 years they will be 20 & 21 years old. It only get's tougher. Kids walking around @ 17 and 18 years old and built like their 70 is a major problem and very unhealthy. At the end of the day, they are not far away from being young man and looking for jobs,starting college, having kids and starting family's. I'm being honest and if you don't like it? I happen to work with kids every day as a high school teacher, and I am tough on my kids as well, and I agree with you in the real world approach. There is, however, a way that you can be honest with these kids versus putting them down mentally. That kind of berating will only work for so long. Don't take it personal, but it seems too late for that.

You are way off, and i have no clue how you're correlating my relationship with helping student athlete's with you being tough on kids as a high school teacher? You seem to be the one taking it personal and it's never to late.

You get paid to be a teacher. I wake up everyday of the year working with kids for free.

I rarely agree with Nepsy but I'm with him 100%. I have a 13 year old very bright kid I'm talking 1200 sat as 7th grader on math and english and he wants to play ball but he doesnt want to put the work in. I tell him I'm not going to make you go out there an workout but when you are riding the pine or get cut don't come crying to me. I could care less if he plays because I think his future is off the charts but these kids today rarely get the truth. Its all about coddling and trying to rationalize with them and tell them trying is all that matters. No trying is not all that matters if you didn't put the work in and i don't care if we are talking academics or athletics. I had a high school coach that was absolutely brutal to us but you know what when I got my full ride I understood what he was trying to instill in us.

Charles Johnson arrived at MC 6'3" and 385 lbs and could not finish 1 sprint across the field with a very low self esteem. He is now 295 lb stud who will play FBS ball. Of course you can't walk around berating kids all the time, but you can be brutally honest. It's also a lot more than trying to cover it all on a Football thread. There's another kid who didn't play against Scotland, who finally got it this year, he's a senior now. It happen because no one gave up on him. He will be a major leader with the program this year.None of that would have happen without staying on their ass 24/7. It's a formula that has been working for longer than you have existed on earth.

I very much appreciate the numerous coaches through out high school and college who ripped me up on a regular. I finally got it, and thank god they didn't believe it was to late.
