Silly boy, how many times have you been told that those old WNCHSAA titles are no more than district titles at best. At their apex the WNCHSAA only had 42 schools in 4 conferences and in 1976 when it folded there were only 32-34 teams. I went back through the NCHSAA records and found ACTUAL Shelby State titles in 1986 & 1987(3A) 1998 (2A), 2005 & 2006 & 2013 (2AA), 2014 & 2015 (2A) That equals 8 state championships since 1972.
Regarding your claim that Shelby won a title in 1984.. Swimming? Girls soccer? This claim is as mythical as you trying to claim those old district titles in the WNCHSAA. The NCHSAA lists the 3A state champion as Tarboro and 2A champ as Forest Hill.
I know you have had an ongoing debate with some of your fellow Golden Lion fans about your need to boast about the Shelby programs accomplishments, but PLEASE do not try to over inflate your accomplishments by trying to claim fictitious titles. You don't need to
imacrestfan- we will assume you are a rational person, so once again we make our case with some simple questions.
1) How is a NCHSAA championship deemed a more true and unified "state" title during the period from 1930 to 1976, when, as you noted, there was no interplay with the WNCHSAA that existed with over 40 public high school programs, some of which have proven to dominate since the merger?
2) Do you know why the current NCHSAA uses 1972 as a start date for most statistics, when they know the WNCHSAA member schools are not represented in those stats until 1977 ? We will answer that one for you. 1972 was the first year since 1960 that within the pre-merger NCHSAA, the eastern champ met the western champ to determine the NCHSAA overall champion in all four classifications. So, were the pre-1972 east and west champs not legitimate Titles? You go tell Reidsville '63, '69 and '70 don't count.
3) Since the current NCHSAA has seen fit to include a list of "Other Champions" on it's website and in the same "Championship Magazine" distributed to fans as programs for the Title game venues, it is apparent that the NCHSAA does acknowledge and celebrate ALL historic North Carolina football champions as valid and legitimate, regardless of; rival associations, no east vs west finals, 6 man, 8 man, Div II, and the historically black high schools. They all count. And they should. If teams win all their playoff games, they are champs. Individual teams do not and have not controlled the historic playoff formats. Far from fictitious, my friend.
