The Best Player in the State

Not North Carolina

This is the best I have ever seen in person. In high school, I guess if it works out I will be able to compare in a couple weeks!

Sorry for the bad words in the song with this!

Kentrell Jones from Gaffney in above video, freak athlete...Wonder what every happened to him?

Stupid as a box of rocks he was doing some QB camps for youth a couple of years ago he still lives in Gaffney!

What could have been he play at Juco for a year or 2 maybe (William Penn) but grade and easy stuff like reading and writing was a challenge for him, really sad!

Surprised no one has mentioned Chazz Surratt at East Lincoln. Kid puts up freakish numbers every week.

Last week he broke the North Carolina career TD record with his 217th. He still has a couple records in his reach. He has over a 4.00 weighted grade point average so even though he is going to Carolina, he will be doing his own papers.

He is not even top 100 NC

I have to completely disagree with this. Moe Neal had NOONE helping him this year. It's hard to look at his stats this year and gauge the value he has. Look at last year when he had a decent line to work with as well a above average QB getting him the ball. Let Rico and Moe swap teams this year I bet their numbers swap as well.

Dowdle is an exciting player, but Dexter Lawrence is the best player and it is not close. Would also rate Chazz Surratt, Dickerson, and Overton as better.

I'm guessing none of yall have seen Hough play. Honestly this wouldn't even be a debate if you have seen Osborne play and I cant even stand Hough but this kid is worth $20 to see every Friday

Since we are just throwing names out there white from SC is just turned 16 and is right in the pecking order with all these guys and he is a sophomore so smoke on that for just a second. Fast forward 2 years this want be a debate. In all honesty not sure anyone is in the class with big Dexter. The kid from Hough might have more overall impact because he is a skilled player who can return kicks, block kicks, cover and player receiver if need be. All of these kids are special it just depends on your appetite.

The best Running Back in the state is BJ Emmons....period. He would have
to be in the conversation of overall best players in the state. He is an Under
Armour All American, Shrine Bowler, etc. etc.

I haven't seen Dexter Lawrence. But having the pleasure to coach against Chris Leak back in the day, Chazz Surratt is the best QB I've had to coach against since Leak. He can run and throw. Is a beast running the ball and his arm is very strong and accurate. Best player in the state this year IMHO.

Here it is in a nutshell....Rico is a great football player. Is he the best in the state? That is for someone with better knowledge of players across this state than me.
All I can tell you is that he is one hell of a special player. He is a very respectful young man and I will take him on my team any day of the week and twice on Sunday. We at ACR have been blessed to witness his abilities over the past years. I think he would be the first to tell you that he would rather his team win and he get no recognition than to lose and him get all the attention. He is a first class young man.

BTW, he isn't the only one on this team like that.

I think alot of the Rico frenzy is partly because his junior year last year he was an unknown essentially and Reynolds wasnt very good. This year Reynolds is a state championship contender because of this one guys video game numbers. He has just kind of exploded the past 3 months.

may the question is most valuable player in the state. sounds that is what we are talking about if you get down to it.

Kentrell Jones from Gaffney was the best I ever saw until Chazz Surratt and Rico Dowdle.

yes he was
Yea and I think he had fewer yards and more carries than jave jones. This year dowdle is phenomenal, last year I didnt even remember him playing against us. I think he has two meaningless touchdowns when y'all were down 27-0.

William Penn was an NCAA D3 school when Jones played there.

I thought Osborne was the best player for Hough last year and they were loaded with BCS recruits at the skill position. He is a playmaker on specialties and both sides of the ball.

A guy told me he watched some ACR film from last season and I did not notice any super standouts. Did Rico miss some games last season?

Let me make this simple for you and everybody. I saw the best player in all of North Carolina play last year. He was Josh Ladowski of Lake Norman. Hal Capps never even gave him a wink and he was 5 miles from his school. He set a record for all purpose single season yards for North Carolina last year.

The year before he was basically all world. The kid threw the ball further than any high school kid I have ever seen. But Hal Capps the Shrine coach never gave him sniff. Ladowski had committed to play baseball at Carolina the year before and never attended a combine.

He was named the Gator Aid North Carolina Player of the Year directly after the season and all state. But didn't get a sniff. Then people began talking about his exclusion from the team and someone had to bow out of the game and he was added. He also scored in the game. And he was Shrine Bowl Coach Hal Capps in conference opponent that defeated his undefeated team. This is how shit goes in NC.

I thought Ladowski should have been on the team from the first picks but I think there was more to the selection than conference foes or playing ability. The best QB at the combines in 2014 was Kendall Hinton from Southern Durham and now at Wake Forest. He separated himself from the others. The QB from Butler would have been selected but he opted out. He was very impressive and is now a redshirt at UNC. He did not attend the combines. It is not a requirement to attend to be selected. I can tell you that definitively as a player was selected in 2014 that did not attend and another one was looked very closely.

He didn't attend any shrine bowl combines which is a must.

Not required to be selected. From what I can gather there was very little information about him going into this season and it is my understanding he did not play QB last year but I may be wrong on his position. The two QBs selected are impressive, Surratt and Austin from Curtbertson who is committed to Oklahoma although initially committed to Tennessee.

If a player is playing a new position, especially QB, and he is under the radar a bit based on his junior year you need to attend a combine to let them see you. For Dowdle the combine is the perfect play to showcase his athleticism. There were five total with Charlotte being the next closest to the one at ACR. In addition he could have easily went to the invitation only combine which was at Mooresville. His coach could easily have requested an invite if he was not invited. Based on what I hear he would have been a perfect selection as an athlete/utility type player who could have played numerous positions.

He played running back. He missed almost all of his 10th grade year with a broken ankle too.

Rico Dowdle is by no means afraid of contact. I could see him being a heck of a safety or running back.

i have been to many shrine bowls and believe me they are not even close to the best 40 players in nc.
coaches usually pick 1 or 2 from their own team whether they deserve it or not,

Update....

Rico Dowdle stats thru 12 games

Passing
111-153 1363 yds. 11 TD's 4 INT's
Rushing
220 carries 2335 yds. 48 TD's ( also has 1 TD Receiving )

Those are some pretty impressive numbers. Does that make him the best player in the state? I don't know, but it does say he is one darn good player.

amen brother
I saw a kid last year that played in 7 games in two years due to injuries. He would not have been top 500 in North Carolina. Never tackled a soul in those games so,I guess combines don't include real life situations. You can bet every year someone is getting special favors. It's who you know with some picks.

Who was that? Had a receiver like that several years ago.

I agree there are always selections that will baffle the public and some are bad picks while some make sense if you know the reasoning. A few years ago a stink was made about a linebacker that was selected from the HC's team. The two centers were not good long snappers, not good at all. The LB was an excellent long snapper and played all specialties. He ended up being a smart selection.

Several years ago an HC said he did not need a specialist they would let the QB do the kicking and punting. Huge mistake, this is a field position game.

One year a QB went down. He was the holder. No one else had held PATS/FGs that season. When selecting you have to look at things that normally do not generate the best player but a player that may can do some things where there is a need.

I think they should also pick the very best punter and very best kicker. If that is the same player great, but too often the great kicker is not such a great punter or vice versa. If you have 44 slots I do not think it is team crippling to have two that are specialist.

That music made me want to smoke a marijuana cigarette and walk through the mall with my paints saggin'.

Rico don't need the Shrine Bowl. It's a joke. Jager Gardner got snubbed last year too. He is a true freshmen playing for Temple now and was on Sports Centers top 10 plays a little over a week ago with the longest rushing touchdown in Temple history of 94 yards on the second play of the game in his first start.

B tango tried to argue his speed and etc last year with me but if you watch the run you can see just how fast he is.

Great to see him doing well.

My questioning his speed was based on his times at the ACR combine. If you see someone play or workout once a lot of your thoughts are determined off the one in person view. May not be fair but that is the way it worked out. You do not have every game televised in high def to get a lot of views. Should Gardner have made the team, I would say yes. Did he stand out head and shoulders at the combine like some do/did, no and that was unfortunate.
