Otis, when I played baseball at Jacksonville in the early 80s, a fan threw a rock and hit a New Hanover center fielder knocking him out cold in the middle of the game.
You got me wondering also about it so looked it up:
Your run on Pender started in 1982. 29 years with wins. For some reason in 1999 ya'll didn't play, but started again in 2000. Thru 2007 and and they finally got ya in 2008. So 29 straight games in 30 years.
Appreciate the effort. I wasn't in the area for all of those. I am guessing the 99 game was cancelled due to Hurricane Floyd? Everyone got us in 2008 I think.

You're right 08 was a bad, bad year Only won 2 games
But in 09 won the state title, ED and SWO were youre only loses. There wernt any open weeks on your 09 schedule so dont think the game was cancelled, just not scheduled.

I was just wondering where he got a rock from in Eastern NC. Its all sand. Would have to import them from out west or buy them at Lowe's. Maybe it was his Pet Rock from when that was the craze at the time ??? Thats a real David vs Goliath story .....

We use to throw maters at the train going threw Vanceboro. They stopped and chased us one time. Train conductor didn't like maters evidently.

And in all respect to Deelee42 his two predictions for this year was WAY off about WRH and probably will be for this game also. It probably wouldn't be a bad thing for Richlands to just go ahead and end this now. But then what would we do for next year ? Maybe they can start a 30 game run them self. NAW - NO WAY. I do wish them the best and hope they do well in the playoffs if they make it.
Weather not looking to bad for Friday Night. Only a 20% chance of rain but a little chilly, great foot ball weather. The JDN news is reporting Northside (Jax) and White Oak have rescheduled there game to Thursday night. Weather is supposed to be about the same both nights so must be something else going on ??
Neither Northside or White Oak wanted to take a chance. Plus, it gives the Northside coaches a chance to go to the Jacksonville-Havelock game

I will bite. I find humor in it even if I don't understand it. I guess I have become even more cynical and sarcastic in my old age.
Kudos to Southwest for such a "fantastic" streak. I will be interested to see if Richlands can keep it respectable or if there is a running clock in the third.

Records against one another aside.....these two schools are literally 11 miles apart door to door and when SWO opened in 1976 suddenly neighbors they grew up going to the same schools were split, cousins they lived up the road from one another were suddenly split, this created one of the county's most heated rivalries. In those days in Onslow County the Jacksonville High and White Oak rivalry was the biggest but newly formed SWO/Richlands rivalry began. Like a lot of high school rivalries, kids that are playing in this game had older brothers that played in this game, their parents and even grandparents participated in the annual game. So records be damned, this is what makes SWO/Richlands a rivalry and the fact that a share of the conference title is on the line makes this a game a big deal in this small part of NC Friday night.
My junior year (1983 season) we played Richlands for our homecoming game on a cold night in late October. A long hard fought, hard hitting game with almost as much trash talk as fans that filled both stands and lined up and down both sidelines. Richlands returned a kickoff late in the 4th quarter to beat us 24-18. What made it even harder to swallow was it was the first SWO homecoming loss in the school's young existence, I for one, took it very personally.
My senior year (1984 season) we also played Richlands the final game of the season and we were 6-0 in conference play and sitting atop the Coastal Plains 2A conference and Richlands was 5-1 needing a win to have a shot at making the playoffs, which was much more difficult than making the water downed playoffs these days. The game was at RIchands and we had both beaten defending Eastern Champion from 1983 East Carteret and the game had top billing in the county. Both teams were near or at the top in all the defensive categories in the county and there was no love loss between the two programs on the football field. They knew they had wrecked our homecoming game the previous year and if they beat us our playoff hopes would come down to a coin toss. There was no social media in those days and the local papers hyped the game starting the previous Saturday and everywhere you went someone had an opinion about the game....I miss those days of real smack talking and supporting your team.
Side note: My sophomore year I moved to live with my father in Fort Myers, Florida and had the pleasure of making the varsity squad at 4A Fort Myers high and playing for Florida coaching legend Sam Sirianni. That season we played a crossed town rival at their field, Coach Sairianni had us get fully dressed and do our normal warm up routine on our own field prior to the game meanwhile at crosstown North Fort Myers High our fans and cheerleaders sat quietly as the home team warmed up wondering where in the hell we were. Once we were done with warm ups we got on the bus fully dressed and had a police escort across town right into our rivals stadium. We walked off the bus and straight out onto the field for the coin toss and before our stunned adversaries knew it we were up 14-0.
In the 1984 game at Richlands High that is exactly what we did and when we reached Richlands Stadium with a deputy sheriff escort and sirens blaring, we found Richlands stadium packed to over capacity and rocking. Richlands had a hell of a football team but we took em down 20-6 and went on to represent the Coastal Plains Conference in the 1984 playoffs.
Considering the Richlands drought for wins against SWO and what is on the line, anything can happen....after all, this is high school football, full of traditions, stories from the past, rivalries and school pride.

It's Thursday, the longest day of the Football week. Other than the cheers and moans from last year seems like a long way till tomorrow night. Last full practice for both teams until the BIG ONE for both of us. It feels just like a playoff game and all practical purposes it is. Lot on the line for the Stallions and Wildcats. Both are in good shape and should have a full roster and ready to Rock & Roll.

Sadly all are committed for other engagements. All the networks wanted to add Friday Night Football with the game but we opted for Billy and Melvin to provide the coverage. Nation wide coverage would bring in a lot of riff raff and spoil the atmosphere. How ever you are invited to come and along and with all Richlands and SWO fans have a great time. I know your team is on a Hope and a Prayer this week so would understand if you cant show up.
Chris with the JDnews should be there and have a lots of pics/videos. They do a great job with Friday Night Football. If you do come be sure and have your picture taken in front of our State Title Display at the entrance to the Corral. Might even let you sit on the Stallion in front of the school.

Good JV matchup tonight. Come watch as Richlands brings down 6 or 7 Juniors from the varsity to play JV tonight. I guess a win over Southwest is important, anyway they can get it. They do it every year. LOL

Good article in todays JDN paper. The area gurus have spoken and its ALL SWO tomorrow night, along with Croatan. So lookin like SWO then Croatan and bringing up the rear with the gear .... Richlands. However unlike some other team (guess who) we wont pre-print any T Shirts or give out victory towels before the game. I so hope they have something off the wall so SWO fans can have another memento. I hear those Ts are a prized item. I never got one ..... lol. I do have one of the Terrible Towels, well its really just an old shop rag .....

You got better sipherin skills than I do Chris. I mis counted my fingers and toes and had the record wrong. It is 31 vice 30 game streak. That must be why they never let me keep score in any games .....
All good brotha. Yeah, that gets me too sometimes. I forget they played once in the playoffs during The Streak.
