SOUTH POINT VS FORSTVIEW

Oh I would pay triple the price for a ticket to see that, LOL. I think my money is safe. With that said, I do not think our system is covered in dinosaur poop nor do I think we need to abandon it. I do think we need to tweak it and open it up a bit but we have to remember what got us here. Look at our record, we have a winning record over practically everybody we play on a regular basis except Shelby. And that includes that Crest bunch who believe SP has never or will ever beat them. Check the records and you will see what I am saying is true. Furthermore I believe that if we followed the pack and changed our game schemes to "more modern" conventions we would not have near the record we currently have. If you look on the field before kick off every week, you will see that to the naked eye most of our opponents each week appear to be more athletic. Yet we tend to win the majority of those games anyway. That is due to our "antiquated methods" that is not popular today, our dedicated coaches who implement them, and the heart of every Red Raider that takes the field. Go Big Red - take no prisoners this week!

Okay now think about this...

Crest may or may not have had better athletes. But you wanna say that we did? fine. We did. Now, Crest (while losing to SP) made it past Erwin in 2010 (SP did not) Crest made it to State 2011 and 2013...WE DID NOT WIN!!!! Crest did not win...you call it choking...I say, where was SP? You left Crest to win for you? Is that it? What happened Raiders? Crest wasn't suppose to be at any of those championships remember? SP was conference champion! Where was our conference champion at in the playoffs??? You have a winning record over Crest though, congrats...

It really is a situation where I guess it comes from the coaches, or just people who see color and think we have no athletes. I think the system limits "athleticism" because 2 players carry the ball on offense the entire year. SP has had a run of athletes as good as any in Gaston County the last 15-25 years easily. Some years the cycle in talent is down, but more years than not we have legit players as evidenced by what goes on during play. We play to our strengths and don't try to zone block (ahem Crest) with 280 lb. OL because we don't have a lot of those annually. So, we take our 215 lb. guys who might be a D2 DE on a crest team, and he's a great offensive tackle for us for 2-3 years. This business about how we have less athletes has gotten out of hand. HH had about 3-4 really good athletes on that team. They may have a couple more finesse type athletes at 149 lbs. who play basketball all the time, but they didn't have as many 165 lb. guys who can also run, jump and play and who have been in the weight room a little bit. SP has more football athletes than HH. That much has been obvious the last 15 years. When HH had 2000 plus students...sure more athletes because they had twice the number of kids to choose from. Since FV opened in Gastonia...that argument is just wrong in present day. There aren't many Jeranie Boyds coming through anywhere.

DB31, I see where you're coming from and partially agree, but you'd have to show me any past team where we could go 5 wide with a QB who could run and gun to be all in.

The Gazette just posted their "expert picks" for tomorrow night. Interesting that they unanimously pick SP over FV and EG over Ashbrook. FV and Ashbrook were their co-favorites to be the conference champs just a few weeks ago.

And making it even more interesting, both of the "co-favorites" are at home and the "experts" are picking the visiting teams.

So much for home field advantage and expert's picks.

The 2013 team had plenty of athletes to go 5 wide. However, some of them were no longer playing football or were no longer at SP. Don't know about a qb that could really throw it though.

Okay, who would you put in empty? It amazes me that as good as we are at baseball, we have no big arms. Maybe, no thrower sees it worth their while to play QB in the redbone.

O.K. here goes:
Bray, King, Tanner, Trey, Pearsall, Green - and Brooks (assuming you have a different qb)

Dan and Chase could've been on that team. What about Adam? Did he used to play football - not sure? Tall with a high 80's fastball - might have been a pocket passer. And didn't DP quarterback this group in middle school? Couple other kids that transferred but I don't really know about them.

Uncle... but it's all about the trigger puller, and how often will we have a group like that? What we do is beautiful and reminds me of our roots. The one thing that is unlike the old days is a lock down, kick ass, hide the women and kids defense.

The reality is you could have gone 5 wide and still had plenty leftover to cover on Defense without having kids go both ways. Pretty sure two of those kids played as sophomores in '11 (Dan and Chase). Maybe those two could have gone to play travel ball the previous summer and not forced them to choose between football and baseball. If they had played Legion it wouldn't have been a big deal at all. And that's the truth and everyone knows it. But the offense was based off of two kids - Leeper and then Bray.

That's what had worked and it's a great offense. And everyone saw the video of Bray running the 400 in middle school. He looked like Secretariat in the Belmont. But geez, look at the speed and athleticism SP could have put to use. Had a good OL too in '13 and those LB's were unreal.

One of the fastest kids on the SP team was returning kicks and playing Nose Guard. Really.... Could have opened up the offense, but the wagon was hitched to Bray and no one else. Concord had a great D and could throw in spite of their great RB.

The flex bone offense is QB and FB heavy, but you can still distribute the ball elsewhere. Kids like offenses that distribute the ball.

Game is underway. Forestview won the toss and deferred to 2nd half so SP had 1st possession. After a great run by Leeper to the FV 20, everyone got butterfingers. Three fumbles in the first 3 minutes. The Raiders turned it over, two plays later the Jaguars fumbled it back. SP fumbled again but recovered. Not an auspicious start to this very important game. Fortunately, the Raiders were able to convert a 4th and 10 into a 1st down and then get a TD (King - 4 yd run). Gonna be a long night, I suspect.

SP 7 - FV 0 8 min left in 1st qtr.

End of 1st quarter: SP 7 - FV 0 -- Jaguars with the ball on the SP 34

Neither team has been able to get their offense going; each team was forced to punt twice each. Jaguar defense is on the lookout for the QB keeper while the SP defense is rushing the pass, forcing the QB out of the pocket.

In keeping with the way the evening has gone: Stuart Cramer was leading North Gaston 21-0 with 5 left in the 1st quarter; Ashbrook up 12-0 over East Gaston close to end of 1st.

FV advanced to the SP 25 before SP's Alexander intercepted a pass at the SP 10. This sets up a 7 play drive culminating in a 27 yd TD run by Etherton.

SP 14 - FV 0 7:40 left in the half.

FV had the ball to start the 2nd half but were forced to punt on a 3 and out. SP, starting on the FV 45, varied the plays on their 1st drive of the half with King and Wilson moving the ball steadily and capping it off with a 2 yd run by King for the TD.

SP 21 - FV 0 7 min left in 3rd quarter.

A Jaguar fumble was recovered by the Raiders on the FV 33. Next play resulted in a pass from King to Ray for a 33 yd TD.

SP 28 - FV 0 6:43 left in 3rd.

FV actually gained ground on their next possession, starting on their own 34 and moving the ball to the SP 8. However, the drive stalled out and the Jaguars turned it over on downs (SP 15) after a tackle for loss and a QB sack. They then got the ball back on the SP 23 after a SP fumble. A holding call on the Jags moved the ball back to the SP 39 as the 3rd quarter came to an end.

SP 28 - FV 0

Fourth quarter opened with another holding call on the Jags. FV 1st and 30 from the SP 43. Neal taken down for an additional loss of 17 (back in FV territory) but a completed pass on the next play made it 2nd and 25. Incomplete pass brought up 3rd down, delay of game made it 4th down. Pass to Neal completed to the SP 12 gave the Jags a 1st down plus a facemask call (penalty declined) on SP. FV fumbled the ball but recovered on the SP 21 - 2nd and 19. FV got themselves out of the hole down by down, finally scoring on a pass to Neal (10 yd).

SP 28 - FV 7 (7:29 left in game)

Another very nice game from Goo. FV packed the box and gave little room for the fullback but got killed on the corners. Best defensive effort by the Raiders this year. Moe Neal probably had about 30-40 yards on 15 or so carries. Pass defense was also stout. A couple of picks and some nice hits to knock the ball loose. Raiders were just too much for the Jags. On a side note, hopefully the ref crew are back at home studying their rule book before they return to coach Pop Warner tomorrow morning. Very poor effort from the boys in the striped shirts.

SP played a solid game but not really flashy. I thought Forestview did not look nearly as good as advertised. Maybe that had something to do with our defense. Overall I think that tonight showed SP is the best team in a mediocre conference. However credit should be given to SP for 11 players beating 16. Those five refs were an absolute clown show tonight. Completely clueless all night long. They could easily be a replacement crew for the five jokers that stood on the stage at the Democrat debate this week.

I'm up in Boone on vacation. Lol. Had to miss this game but i love beating them Jags and mr moe neal.

Mr. Moe finished the night with 13 yards rushing on 14 carries. That's right, 13. Not sure what Syracuse sees in him but best of luck to him anyway. A free ride is a free ride.

Sounds like the crew we had tonight....awful. They didn't cost us the game, but they helped Ashbrook a lot! They called (1) TD back (no foul), gave Ashbrook a fumble recovery on a missed call when our QB clearly scored and then they said we touched a recovered onside kick before it went 10 yards (when it went at least 15 yards). This one was chicken sh$t, Ashbrook has 3rd and 6 at a critical point in the game, they call time out, coming out of the time out the refs throw an unsportsman like flag on us and give them a first down and 15 yards. We eventually stopped their drive, but it probably chewed up 4 minutes on the clock.

And the Mighty Red Raiders march on! Congrats to the Coaches and Players who so ably carry a mantle passed down over generations!

Holding Neal to 13 yards rushing is a big deal. Kid has been doing it since his freshman year and is a special player. SP defense was there every time he touched the ball. He truly had no where to go. Most importantly they shut down the running game while doing a very good job of containing the passing game. SP played tighter coverage, laid some nice hits and gave up very little YAC. Not sure of passing % but it had to be below 50%. Did it without Steele on the Dline and arguably our best DB in Brandon. Coaches had a great D game plan and the kids carried it out. Need to get Washam back at WB to help Goo get to the edge when these teams keep stacking the middle.

I agree raidertime, coaches had a great game plan and the kids executed it pretty well, need to cut out the fumbles though.

Well this went about how expected, in my eyes atleast. Moe can do damage we all know that, but when you have 5 offensive linemen that can't block 3 down linemen you have problems. Our line is by far our weakness. You put 8 yes 8 back to stop the pass then your not going to complete many at all. Never this year have we seen so many dropped balls by receivers. You had a plan and it worked, not that any of us are surprised. But if you dont think Moe is a special player you must be living under a rock. Give him tools around him to succeed and the boy will go far.

The Jaguars were 15-33-2 passing for the entire game; at halftime they were 8-18-1, I believe.
