Hows things appear to be looking this year? Heard we lost to South Brunswick in the Jamboree at West Brunswick but not any details other than that. Need a heavy bounce back.

Defense got completely gashed… offense did good for the most part… got a long way to go if they want to complete for a conference title.

I cant make it to the games as much as I used to cause I work out of town but what seems to be the issue at South? Coaching? Community? Talent? little of everything or lack there of? One of the most winning programs in the state for years and years and it seems we've consistently gone from trying to make deep playoff runs to hoping we beat East and West Columbus, clearly outclassed by Whiteville as sad as that is to say.

I can’t speak on the coaching I know that’s a harder job than a lot of people realize and everyone does the best the can …

but I will say this team has alot of young players and seems like the community has lost interest being we haven’t been competitive in a few years…

and also just my opinion since they started streaming the games online it’s much easier for alot of people just to watch from home instead of supporting the team in person.

I still believe in Coach Dove and these young players and know they can have a good season.

Yeah i just hate to see it, I do think the world of Dove, think he is a great guy. Just gotta wonder how much longer the rope will slide before its cut. Beating West Columbus with a hail mary can't be viewed as acceptable by anyone. We all hit the down years all programs do but it seems our lows have gotten a little lower. I hope they turn things around and surprise a lot of people this year. Is Jake still helping coach?

I agree with everything you just said … we should see improvements this season and next should be loaded with seniors … so if we ain’t turning things around in the next two years I think it’s time to have that conversation…

I have no idea if Coach Fonvielle is helping this year … but I know he loves South Columbus football so I’d be surprised if he isn’t.

This might come across as looking for a handout but is South anywhere near the total of students for reclassification to 1A? I know our numbers have dipped heavily in recent years and the thought of us beating Pender last year as down as we were and them losing in the 4th round in 1A was head scratching. We've gotta be close to the mark on total numbers. And yes I cant see Jake not helping if its at all possible when family activities permit.

I think SC had somewhere between 700-750 students …

im not sure what the cut off is but I’d guess we’ve got about 100 or so over from being 1A…

not sure on the turn out for football though kinda seems like little boys don’t grow up dreaming of wearing that black helmet like they used to..

I’m one of them cheesy cliché guys that beleieves busting your butt in the weight room and doing all the little things right in practice and in games will always give you a respectable season no matter the talent … but you’re right you got to have the horses if you wanna make a run.

I’m with you core, I’ve always went about the game especially at the high school level as I’ll take 20 guys with the heart of a lion and desire to win over 20 talented athletes that have the heart of a lamb. We’ve beat a many a team around here whether it was the Red Devils in my days or the Stallions at South that had a lot more talent than we did because we simply flat out wanted it more.

U r right to certain degree. My team in late 80’s had heart ,until big Chester mckocloton from Whiteville came out.I started calling my mother because it waz over before it started.Meaning u got to have talent.

There was many years there where a better coached/played with more heart South Columbus team beat more talented whiteville team…

yes obviously you gotta have talent also to win state championships … but you don’t have to have first round NFL draft picks to have a respectable season.
