South Columbus vs Lincolnton at Vinegar Hill

And in just have to say that the doubting and rowdy fans that we have this year bring back fond memories of 2007, when everyone was saying the same things. The heart of this team is leaps and bounds over what it was near the start of the season. You aren't gonna see us lay down anytime soon. We are Wolves, and we will fight to the 00:00. Good Luck South Columbus and hope to see y'all there!!!

TheKidd12, it's good to hear from you. We did have a high scoring team, last year, and we had some defensive concerns that were exposed during the Maiden game.

Reidsville contained us with what I thought was an excellent defensive performance. Actually, we gave a pretty good defensive effort against them but they did what they needed to do and that was enough.

The score at the half, last year, was 14-7 in their favor. We were hoping our guys could maybe tie it up and scratch out a win but they were the ones who came out and scored then picked up a fumble, late, and scored again. They were the best team.

My friend, whose post you were responding too, is an ardent Wolf and is associated with the team. I think he probably goes by the adage "To be the best one must beat the best". No one loves his team any more than he does. I believe he would want us to play Reidsville every week.

Here, I'm thinking from the heart but sometimes I want to believe we're only a few adjustments away from playing that stellar game and pulling off an upset similar to what I saw in 1967 when Lincolnton beat Hickory, a game that few if any even imagined we could win, but again, that's the heart telling me this.

We've struggled, this season, but I'm proud of our team's effort. Maiden beat us, again, week before last. We had them down at the half but when we came back out we looked tired.

We beat Graham, Last Friday, by an impressive score, but at times, we struggled against them.

I'm really concerned about South Columbus...It's going to take a good, hard solid effort to get by the Stallions.... In my opinion this will be an uphill battle for us.

For anyone in small 2A to beat Reidsville, a whole lot of variables and phenomena would have to line up just perfectly for that team and against the Rams.

I by no means am doubting Linkman. We have a great working relationship. But there is something special about this team. We have been minor adjustments away from several.wins this year. And now we are at a point that we are finding our stride.

To be honest, Maiden didn't beat us, an inadvertent whistle did. We had that fumble and scoop that was going for 6 ... But matters not. We are here now.

Everyone thought we wouldn't get this far, and yet here we are, the lone SD7 team left. Big or small, brackets don't matter, we are still playing. And I for one know that these seniors lost in 4th Round two years in a row ... They aren't going to go down without a fight.

South Columbus is going to give us a fight. But just know that we are far from out of this. I look forward to seeing everyone at the game (the ones who make the long trek)

I for one appreciate all the history and comments you guys bring to the table. Makes my heart smile. Don't give up on these boys yet, we want a ring!!!

Does anyone know if the team plans on traveling and staying Thursday night or are we heading down early Friday?

Wow. Amazed at the class of the Lincolnton posters. Respect is earned for you guys for sure. Glad to see that change up on the boards. Nonetheless looking for an exciting, hard fought game. I know I saw someone post about you guys making it to the 4th round well let me brag on my Stallions for a second, we’ve made it to the 4th round 3 times in the last 5 years. (2012 lost @ Tarboro vs Todd Gurly, 2013 @ Tarboro, 2016 vs Edenton Holmes) so our boys are used to this dynasty we’ve established. Wishing safe travel to all you guys down here and my recommendation on food would be Joe’s BBQ in Whiteville or Dale’s Seafood in Tabor City.

Lincolnton as always you post realistically and logically. I wish you and the team well.

ER lost to Wheatmore on last minute field goal and they only were bested 14-0 by SC. I know hard to compare scores but this year's ER team would lose by 30 to the one from last year.

Safe travels if you are making the trip and I will keep my eye on results.

Always exciting to go somewhere new in the playoffs. This past week was our first time at Graham and this will be our first trip to SC. And we remember that Todd Gurley Tarboro team all too well. They beat us a week after beating you guys.

Thanks GuardTrapStallion, we know about the Stallions and their fine tradition of playing hard and never giving up.

I thought I saw the SC posters discussing one of their current players whose last name is Buffkin. We’re familiar with that name from the past. There was another Buffkin some years ago. If I remember right, he was one of those head takers they had on defense. They could definitely bring it.

I recall other team names like Duncan,Jacobs, Farmer, Worley and Piver.
They were a fine squad, and champions in their own right .

Tabor City is a long way from Lincolnton. I’m hoping some of our fans are able to make the trip. Normally, we travel pretty good.

Speaking of trips, I saw where Columbus County rival, Whiteville, has to go up to Burnsville for their game with Mountain Heritage. Should be an interesting journey for the Wolfpack.

Since it gets dark by 6 O’clock, this time of year, it feels kind of eerie going up that big mountain to get there. The highway winds around it and once you get near the top, when you look down, you can see the lights of Marion. Because you’re so far up, these lights look like grains of salt scattered across a black tabletop. It looks surreal...The “Toe” River is near the stadium and the elevation of the town is close to 3,000 ft. It can surely get cold, there.

I don’t know of any better entertainment than the playoffs. All the best to each team and may the injury bug stay away.

It would be a mistake to look past South Columbus. They have a very good team. Love the wing t and the double wing t. You can run a lot of plays out of that set,but I would like to see their QB throw the ball more because he has a great arm. Their are a lot of pass plays you can run out of those formations. Good luck Stallions.

Yep. We held Gurley to 26yds in that eastern final.

Spencer has the arm rbs have hands.... the fullback has pretty soft hands too... don’t need the homerun ball just need something to shake things up. A lot easier to to stop a one trick pony...

If that is the case why doesn't South Columbus throw it a little more and shake things up? I'm not doubting what you say, but I'm just curious. From the season stats it looks like they don't throw the ball more than a couple times a game. I understand that in the 2nd half against Whiteville that South Columbus dominated time of possession and nbr of plays run....but only scored 2 TDs. I wondered if they attempted more passes in that situation.

If I'm a team playing us I put 8 in the box and say I dare you to throw it. I think someone said it earlier on here but this has got to be one of the overall slowest teams I've ever seen at south, we've always been known for our speed. Even got one of the old "Speed Kills" shirts in my closet but we just don't have that this year, offense or defense. #7 has okay speed, Buffkin put on some pounds over the summer and I think he lost a step from last year. Think it could be a good game Friday but if we come out as sluggish on offense and have the penalties we've had the past two weeks this one could get out of hand in a hurry.

Hard to replace willie no matter who you bring in...One of the best around anyone that played for him knows he was tough he expected 110% every play no matter what and he got it out of you. Just something about him and coach price that you would want to run through a brick wall for if they told you too

Ahh that’s right. I think I actually went to that state championship game or the following year. Can’t remember which year it was but it was at Wake Forrest

Replying to too many comments To quote them all but here goes...

The buffkin boy that’s playing now isn’t of any close relationship to the one that played on the 07 team that I’m aware of.

We held TG3 to 26 yards and should have had the game won but a bad call gave TB the ball on our 15ish yard line.

Coach Gore was an awesome Defensive Coordinator. He kept it stupid simple for the guys. Great guy.

I agree, I’d put 8 in the box if I’m the opposing team. We should run the waggle it’s simple yet effective but I will say, our QB tends to hold on to the ball too long and look for a HR ball to the WR. Short and simple passes aren’t in our playbook this year.

A 2000 yard rusher is serious! Wing T this way. Not a lot of passing but hoping we put some of that in the mix especially with the QB we have.
I agree, Spencer is more than capable and should have been used every game to work on it to help in the playoffs because your they're going to need it the deeper they go.

South Point has played Lincolnton many times over the years and had some blowouts, some shootouts during that time, but we generally play nice on the boards with the Wolves. Almost hate to win against them. Should South Columbus win over the Wolves Friday night, I wouldn't be surprised if you came on here and apologized to the Lincolnton fans for beating them.

Thanks Sasha,. Even though you’re a South Point alumna you have a strong Lincolnton connection.

You sure were right about South Point beating us but the Raiders have been good to us.

I’ve known several people from Columbus County and each of them were nice and they were tough, like people from the Belmont area..

This past weekend I showed a co-worker some of the dialogue between the South Point and Shelby posters. I specifically pointed out an exchange of messages between you and a Crest fan who had joined the conversation. She was impressed with your statistical knowledge of football, your writing skills and your willingness to stand up for yourself.

I told her of your family, here, in Lincolnton, whom she knows. This co-worker was a Lincolnton cheerleader, class of 1968. Her daughter is one of the department chairs at LHS.

I mentioned that I talked with you on NC Preps from time to time and I had met you, once.
She reminded me to never demand that you bring me a beer LOL.

Closer it gets the more worried I am about this one... Stallions are not peaking at the right time .... been a real sloppy couple weeks on friday ....hope they’ve had a good week of practice.... GO STALLIONS

Core31,SC is missing something they have in past years. Don't know exactly but its on defense, aggressiveness I think and killer instinct. Hope you find it this week. But you only lost 1 game this year so play hard.

MSC, I don’t trust my night vision driving back from Tabor City, so I’ll have to stay at home. I would love to go to a game at Vinegar Hill. To me, Columbus County is synonymous with NC high school sports.

It would be exciting to me just to get to look around the area. I went to Holden Beach a long time ago and went up to Calabash to eat fish. On the way back I got lost and ended up in Lake Waccamaw, the town, not the lake. I thought it was one of the prettiest places I’d ever been to. I remember the trees were full of witches hair and how flat the land was.

I didn’t know you were in that area. I do hope people there are good to you. In you, they’ve got themselves a really good guy.

Our team hasn’t done so well, this season, but they got a lot of heart...hoping you can get to see the game.

I have finally moved towards the coast down here to Topsail...love the area...I still keep up with all my teams from up there and noticed L-Town was down but they always turn it up playoff time...I went and watched South Columbus play a couple years back...Can't remember the QBs name but he had a good arm...it's a little over a hour's drive so I will go pull for Lincolnton an d post updates...and thank you for the kind words

Last week I listened to last year's game on YouTube. It was y'all's radio broadcast. That game was 14 7 with 5 mins to go. We had missed a FG. Got a huge 3rd down stop. You guys punt. Bryson Durham breaks a big run for a score. We kick off and Durham gets a pick 6. I forgot how great a game it was. We played a great game against Surratt and I never understood why your OC didn't try to go to the other receiver?

We Lincolnton fans were wondering the same thing. The Wolves had a very good, tall, fast receiver on the other side that was a play maker. It didn't make a lot of sense to keep going to Surratt when Reidsville was keying on him the whole game. Our defense played well enough but the our offense let us down in that game.

We put a ton of pressure on the QB. No. 4 and 73 stayed in the back field most of the night. It was pretty cool listening to the radio broadcast. The announcers didn't give Reidsville much of a chance in pregame. They kept saying we wouldn't be able to stop the offense. By halftime, they were a little stunned and by start of 4th they were talking about this was a do or die drive for Lincolnton. I was more excited after that game than the state title.

Some Lincolnton fans streamed the Reidsville game on Facebook Live and I watched most of the game. Reidsville was totally in control of that game despite the 14-7 score late in the fourth quarter. I believe the X factor in that game was the weather. It played to the strength of the Reidsville D and took Lincolnton out of its game which was to score and score in a hurry. Most of those passes were off and were set-up by the Rams stopping Lincolnton on first down bringing up second and long. I always wondered the outcome if the games had not been pushed back a week because of the hurricane. Probably the same outcome but I will always wonder.
