A good 2A school playing a great 4A school is a little like playing the Power Ball Lottery. Does the 2A school have a chance? Technically yes, but they would be wise not to spend the money before the drawing. Some people just can't get over the feeling that all I have to do is buy one lottery ticket, and I will surely win. You, of all people, can reference that Shelby HAS played and been competitive many times with the top “powers” in 4A in both states already.
Shelby has nothing else to prove.
The Golden Lions had a four game series in the 90’s with nearby 4A/5A Gaffney, only the program with the most State Championships in SC history. Shelby defeated them in one of their Championship seasons and played them competitively in others.
Gaffney plays for another one tomorrow.
And for the newbies on here that never experienced single champs in each of the four classifications in NC until now, overall 4A class champ Crest in 94 and 96 was beaten by Shelby in 93, ,95, and 97 (2A), and played closely in 94 and 96.
For reference, other programs winning the unified 4A title within 5 years of Crest was Richmond Senior, West Charlotte (Knotts), Indepedence (Knotts), and Asheville AC Reynolds.
Shelby STILL plays Reynolds and Crest EVERY year.
By the way btango, we don’t see you or the others here challenging the revolving recent Charlotte 4A “powers” to play “up” to confirm their uniqueness.
Shelby has played and won against dozens of upper classification programs that were deep playoff caliber level and even Champions.
We will continue to do so, even while the current Charlotte 4A “powers” rarely do.
Charlotte school offered to travel to Shelby when they found out they had the same open date. Shelby was not interested. The two head coaches and one AD confirmed that with me.
My advice to Shelby would have been not to take the game. Goal is state title. That game would have been more of a hindrance.

Mallard Creek played Chambers, Hough (twice), Butler and Gaffney. That's a tough schedule for any program much less one that's trying to rebuild. I guess you could argue they're not going out of their way to play Chambers and Hough but I'm not sure who else you'd have them face.
Chambers played Highland Springs in Richmond in their first game in their new stadium. They're in the VA class 5A semis in a rematch of last year's state championship. Then Cardinal Gibbons and of course Hough.
Huge fan of Shelby btw. I have fam out that way. Good football. Great people. Food is 10/10.
I don't think anyone's knocking Shelby football. Just the difference between 4A and 2A - those extra 900 students on average make a big difference.

Football is two halves though. And late in the second half, Shelby had SC 4A State Champion South Pointe sweating. Don't misrepresent the game.
Shelby would definitely contend for a title in 4A. Shelby is one of the best programs in NC, regardless of classification.
Misrepresent like you're currently doing. Shelby would have a better chance winning the Powerball. They barely beat AC Reynolds, 15-12. A good team in 4A, but not elite team Hickory Ridge, blew them off the map 31-7. Go back to the delusional 2A board with that used car salesmen crap.

Shelby wouldn't have snowball chance in hell to win a 4A title. They don't have the depth to compete on that level. South Pointe dragging them up and down the field, is an example of reality.
I'm hearing this but I'm not buying it. Shelby was willing to play a top SC team. I have no doubt they would be willing to play Catholic.

With line play and speed and strength of the other guys along with the depth...would wear them down...jus look at us vs Weddington...and they were a premier 3A school that won a lot of recent ships in 3A.
Dutch Fork is the best in SC. I can assure you, it would be a running clock. SP got a huge lead than started playing their bench. They're the King of 2A. That's it! They wouldn't even last playing a 4A schedule, better less than competing for a ship.
