Joyce resigned last week after he said he was told by the school’s administration that the school wanted a “different direction” for the program.

I keep saying John Devine.... eventually he's going to take another gig. I would love/hate for EG to hire him.
I'm sure we could do worse. Whoever it ends up being is going to need a lot of help.... our current staff is weak, weak, weak.

Good luck going forward. Our program at Hickory is still a work in progress, but further along than I thought it would be when our change happened two years ago. I hope your administration will put the money and effort into making a change for the overall betterment of the athletic situation for your school.

I was talking with my son about the coaching change at EG yesterday and he said that he felt that the kids are there to win some games and I also agreed. It’s not like they would be world beaters but no dang reason to have not won a single game this year. Good luck to you guys in finding a coach

John Devine is fully retired from NC. Doubtful he would replace his retirement income for this position. Also, doubtful Gaston County will come up with a part time position here.

I would be shocked if EG will be able to attract someone with head coaching experience.

What is like there? I know that area is full of football!!
Nice area to live in. East Gaston football is 168-332-3 all time, so not much tradition from a winning football stand point. In general the middle school feeders are weak too. East Gaston took a very big hit in football when Stuart Cramer opened a few years back. EG will have a run of athletes every now and then, but not consistently. We need a coach that can do a lot, with not much.

John has an assistant position at Ashbrook. He may do that a couple more years but he would not consider a HC position anywhere.

Yes he would be a good hire but just completing his first year as HC and successful season at Eastern Guildford i would be surprised if he is ready to jump ship.
With a daughter recently enrolling in UNC-G which I am sure he will want to stay close to Greensboro.

He applied. He’s been offered. Good sources know he’s moving on from Eastern. It’s not about the football team.

Just saw the East Gaston job has been reposted on Maxpreps...

Does that mean he turned it down? Heading to Lincolnton or West Caldwell?

I knew the Glass hire was too good to be true. These coaching hires are a crap shoot anyway.

It is kind of weird he was fired after his best year...played some Wake Forest 24-7, I assume that's pretty good. A team that's relatively new coming within 3 scores of the 4a State champ

Coach Helms never accepted the job. He was offered, but declined after careful consideration of what was best for him and his family.

New principal and new ad decided to go in a different direction. That is the reason he was given, and that came from an assistant principal. Parents felt the program was underachieving. Were not happy with 1st round loss in playoffs to a Broughton team they had beaten earlier. And that is the name of that tune!

Thanks for the clarification. If that’s what happened at Rolesville, he wouldn’t like EG. Very similar situation happened to Coach Joyce from what I’m told.

yea. it happens like that sometimes. It is like creating a monster. You have a little success and are moving forward, but people get ahead of themselves and get a little antsy. We wish the kids luck at Rolesville, and EG will get their man eventually. Not from the area, but sounds like Coach Joyce was working hard. 10 years is a long time.

I liked Coach Joyce (personable guy), but I think there comes a time when change is needed. Our program has gotten progressively worse each year over the past three years, something had to change.

He can return as a head coach after being out 6 months. It won’t affect his retirement since coaching isn’t considered to be over a 29 hours a week “part time” job. (Even though we all know that coaching is always a full time job when you’re doing it right.)

Forget John Devine as a candidate for HC position. I think he is doing all he wants relative to coaching currently as an assistant to Brian Andrews (ex-SP DC) at Ashbrook.

Announcement coming this Saturday night at the school. New coach has head coaching experience.

Good luck to the Warriors and their faithful. I'm hoping the new coach gives them his very best.
