The answer would be A. I went to school at a near by college, just wanting to know what people think of the local high school football. I am from the 336 so don't really know to much.

Coach Tyson... Robeson County football has a storied history. There was a time when the county had 10 or so local schools. With mergers and such, it is proud to be the home of Lumberton HS. It is one of the largest in the state. It has had some success over the years, and some valleys. (From memory, I think the 2002 team won 11 games under Jeff Smouse.) Purnell Swett has had some moments as well. Mark Heil is probably their most notable head coach. Under his leadership (twice) I know they had some good teams.

Fairmont from memory had some good teams under Frank Jernigan. They have been good over most of the last ten seasons under a couple of different head coaches. Red Springs had a hall of fame coach in the 70's and 80's, although his name escapes me. They have fluctuated since winning 10 one year, winning 2 the next. South Robeson under Mike Brill was a consistent third round minimum 1A program. St. Pauls during the Hickman, Harrell, and others... were a consistently solid 9 to 11 wins a season program in the 1990's. They won 10 games in 2003. I think they have had 3 or four seasons since with at least 8 wins.

As a county, they upgraded the stadiums in the late 1990's through the opening of the new St. Pauls field in 2003. Considering the lack of economic development in that part of NC, the system has done a good job of supporting their athletic programs. Over the years, Ronnie Chavis was the county AD and he took care of the schools needs as funding allowed. He was an advocate for all the high schools.

I left in 2004. Someone closer to the program can assess the recent state of things. I am also leaving any of the above "comments" for those who know to add to and correct. In all, Robeson County has a tremendous athletic pool to choose from. For the most part, the fan bases support their teams pretty well. Good luck with your endeavors....

Great write up. Unfortunately, you mentioned nothing that he is looking for. For some odd strange reason he is choosing to be briefed on the history, gossip about the new coach/Purnell Swett.

Again, don't ask me why but truthfully it is rather mysterious.

13 High Schools combined to 6- St. Paul's, Parkton, Magnolia, Prospect, Pembroke(West Robeson), Red Springs, Rowland, Maxton, Lumberton, Littlefield, Fairmont, Orrum and Fairgrove. St. Paul's ( Parkton/St. Paul's/part of Magnolia); Red Springs (Red Springs/part of Prospect); Fairmont (Orrum/part of Fairgrove/Fairmont); Purnell Swett (West Robeson/part of Prospect/part of Maxton); South Robeson (Rowland/part of Maxton/part of Fairgrove); Lumberton (Littlefield/Lumberton/part of Magnolia).
Six schools now are:
Lumberton 4A Purnell Swett 4A Red Springs 2A Fairmont 2A St. Paul's 2A South Robeson 1A
Setzer Sherman Cook Heil King Jernigan

Clyde Parrish was the HOF Coach at Red Springs.
Hal Stewart coached at St. Paul's in the 80's.

TMac...Clyde Parrish is the name I missed. You are also right about Hal Stewart. When I got to St. Pauls, the buzz was still over coach Hickman and those who followed him. St. Pauls also had Donnie Kieffer as HC as well as David Lovette. Lovette went on to success as the HC at Red Springs and now Gray's Creek.

Swett to Vic... I realize his first post mentioned coaches. You keep the site up to date on that stuff. I just gave a little history of the programs since he is new to the area. TMac obviously knew more than I could remember...but, the county has much to be proud of...imo.

Swett2victory: The only reason I ask is because the coach was a nice guy when I talked to him. I was Just wondering what the community thought of him. That's all you don't got to get all weird dude

With all due respect, Coach T.Y. Son, I'll have to disperse an A + concerning Governor Purnell's Classroom Conduct for this particular assignment.
