Realignment- proposal #2

Thanks for the link, Sportsnut17!

Just a few things that I noticed about this 2nd draft:

1).Obviously, Polk County has done some lobbying since the initial draft, and would likely be happy with this 2nd draft, considering they would remain in the WHC, which would still be a split league, but one that is evenly split between 3 1A and 3 2A teams...

2). Also thought the realignment committee did a good job of combining conferences N & O with 2 former Eastern TRAC members(Granville Central & Louisburg), mixed with 2 former YVC members(Chatham Central & North Moore), along with adding former Independent Kestrel Heights...Don't know if all the members are happy with this new alignment or not, but it does seem like a balanced football conference overall IMO...

3).I must confess that there may be some of these new or old charter schools that are beginning a football program for the next realignment in 2017, but here's what I know at the moment in terms of the number of 1A schools that will be playing football in 2017:

I've got 32 Western 1A teams including both Chatham Central and North Moore and 39 Eastern 1A schools for a totoal of 71 teams?....Again, this could be wrong if one or more of the new charters schools field a football team in 2017?

Overall I think this 2nd draft seems more appealing from a Western vantage point, but don't know if teams or folks from the East are satisfied with this 2nd draft of the new realignment or not?

Again, thanks Sportsnut17 for keeping us up to date about the upcoming realignment!

Would like to know what other fans think about this 2nd draft of the 2017 realignment?

Will have to wait for Surry County folks, I know initially they were not happy with being in with WS/FCS and will not be happy now. I know Bareman has stated before he didn't think the state would change.

Next appeal process Is in February at the East/West meetings.

I have added the timeline from NCHSAA website:

I'm sure the Surry folks won't be happy with this, but they are pretty much stuck. They wanted a traditional 1A conference with more western schools like Elkin and E.Wilkes, but those other teams were content with their 1A/2A split. Next best solution was a 1A/2A split conference of Surry/Stokes schools, but that would have put the WS schools also in a 1A/2A split, which they are opposed to. No one wants Prep for a variety of reasons, but the biggest ones are lack of gate revenue and lack of sports offerings (they offer maybe 6 sports while everyone else offers 14-16). The only potential positive of this new conference is a 2 for 1 switch, losing Atkins and Walkertown and gaining S.Stokes. It will hurt to lose the Walkertown gate in sports like football and baseball, but losing the Atkins game will at least open up a slot for a better local gate...assuming MA and ES can get a local opponent with an open spot on their schedule.

Don't know about the five team football only conference of which North Moore might be part of or North Moore's non-football conference ... Both seem to NOT make any sense ....

Do the traditional conference rivalries matter to the Mustang fans?

Also curious to know how far is both Louisburg and Granville Central from North Moore, and have the Mustangs ever played either of those schools in any sport before?

Did North Moore have any imput to being placed in this football ONLY conference?

How about any travel issues for conferences N & O for all the other sports?

Gotta be tough to sort out with all the new charter schools wanting and needing to be in a conference...

Think that Kestrel Heights has been on somewhat of an Island for several years now, due to being in a conference with a lot of charter schools who don't have a football program, so I'm sure that the committee wanted to make sure that they designed some kind of conference, so they would have an opportunity to play for a conference title?....It is really somewhat of a new concept that the NCHSAA is undertaking, by placing teams aligned into conferences where there is a limited number of teams that play football, and taking those teams out of those conferences, placing them together in a football only conference?.....It's an interesting concept that will likely be a part of future discussions as more charter schools open in the future, and more 1A schools consolidate, and move on....

Fortunately, the SMC has remained unchanged since 2001 when both Hendersonville and Polk County departed for a new conference home, and I do find it odd that both the Bearcats and Wolverines will now be in separate conferences as well as classifications, beginning in 2017.....Seemingly, every other 1A conference in the state either reshuffles, or disappears altogether for each realignment....

BTW, hope that you are in better health and spirits, RD28327?....Had read late last year that you were having a few health issues!

Best wishes moving forward!

BACK TO THE TOPIC!

it is what it is....getting back to good gates and some of the natural rivalries was the biggest objective....WSPA is a gate and scheduling nightmare.....Bishop doesn't really bring anyone either

Teams in conferences with only 6 teams will get screwed in non conference scheduling especially the traditional good programs. They will have a hard time finding games. I love 8 team conferences, so you only have to find 4 nonconference games.

North Moore's travel costs will soar. They and Chatham Central tossed into a charter school conference which I feel holds little to no promise. I do not know what stance administration and athletic department took at North Moore, but surely they're not settling for this placement without protest. I would rather us take black eyes from West Montgomery each year and compete with strong, established programs. Dang, I complained about the weakness of the YVC and then realignment puts the Mustangs there. Football gates are going to be slim for four years....

At least Bishop offers most every sport. I know attendance plays a role (their ADM is listed at 257), but they only show 4 sports offered on their website - Women's Tennis, Football, Women's Basketball, Men's Basketball. I'm sure they will probably add 1-2 for the spring - probably track. Schools should be required to field teams in at least 1/2 of the sports offered by a conference in order to qualify to be a member. The NW1A offers championships in 10 men's sports (Football, Soccer, Cross Country, Basketball, Wrestling, Swimming, Baseball, Golf, Tennis, Track) and 9 women's sports (Volleyball, Golf, Tennis, Cross Country, Basketball, Swimming, Softball, Track, Soccer) - how is it fair that they are granted membership to the conference, yet don't field a team in nearly 70% of the sports offered? Is this a problem in all conferences with schools that have low ADM members? According to their websites, other low ADM schools like River Mill (15 sports) and Chatham Charter (12 sports) show significant more participation, even though their ADMs are around 160 compared to WSP's 250.

WSPA offers track and I think that's it for Spring sports....don't recall another one.....here a good one : look at their women's basketball roster...9 players listed....7 are seniors.....no JV program...how will they field a team next year?? We all know the answer to that....

If that's true, that puts them at 6 total sports (3 girls, 3 boys). Again, why are they allowed to be a member of a conference when only offering 6 total sports? Their limited membership and terrible gates really screw over everyone else in the conference. It's extremely frustrating...glad the NCHSAA is looking out for the best interests of their member schools.

after checking the Bears spring sports schedule, WSPA is not listed on ANY of the schedules

Competition-wise, Louisburg is probably even with or stronger than North Moore most years, and Granville Central is probably about even. Don't know much about Kestrel Heights.

Agree that travel will be a nightmare. Navigating RDU area traffic on a Friday night headed for Durham, Stem, or Louisburg would probably require the team to leave school by 4:15 or earlier for a 7:30 kickoff.

My prediction is that this FB only conference ain't gonna fly. Seems the committee might look at NM and CC being added into 1A Conference M (which would increase it from 6 to 8 football playing schools), and Kestrel, Louisburg, and GC could be added into 2A conference Q (which would increase it from 5 to 8 football playing schools also) to create a split conference.

I think WS Prep puts everyone at a conflict because of the lack of varsity teams they offer, and they only offer JV football and JV boys basketball as JV Sports. It makes it difficult to schedule and they should not be allowed to compete in a conference when they only offer a couple of sports, but that's what happens when you are a school for basketball and nothing else. Bishop does offer every sport, and they are competitive at almost all sports but I haven't found a catholic school in the state that is not competitive at almost every sport when playing in the NCHSAA. I seen where Bishop's AD wants to be in a straight 1A conference with schools his size, that's quite different than how Cardinal Gibbons feels as they are a 3A school playing 4A(and still winning state championships). The NCHSAA has a huge mess on their hands, and I think schools will start forming their own league sooner rather than later if stuff does not change.

Can we write to mayor or Governor? N.c. needs to catch up with other states.

Don't think writing to the Governor or Legislators will work...they kind of are partially responsible for the current situation in 1A since they WERE the ones who lifted the cap on charter schools.

1A and 2A conference realignment has been, to put it nicely, a CRAZY MESS!!! North Moore especially got a weird deal!!! Outside of football, the Mustangs will be in a 1A league with Chatham Central, Chatham Charter, Woods Charter (between Pittsboro and Chapel Hill), River Mill Academy (Graham), Durham Kestrel Heights, Research Triangle Academy and Raleigh Charter. In football, North Moore is in a five team 1A league with Chatham Central, Durham Kestrel Heights, Granville Central, and Louisburg. The Mustangs will have a hard time trying to schedule seven non-conference football games, and they had a hard time scheduling a third non-conference regular season game last season. The present Yadkin Valley 1A Conference (for football only) and Central Tar Heel 1A Conference (for sports other than football) are MUCH BETTER!

I hate it for these team. Every four yrs they gotta worry about this. Thank God the SMC is not affected. the SMC can't be changed much.

I would like for East Carteret to stay with their current members than go to a split1-A/2-A with Pender and Lejeune.

Going to be tough sledding for the Mariners in the new conference unless they keep growing. That could be a real tough football conference.

EC will be just fine in all sports, they will dominate in basketball & be at the top of the league in football. They have a good run of athletes & some really good coaching that has been missing in the last few years. Will have to disagree about the strength of the league football wise. There isn't strong program in the whole league. Pender, Trask, Lejeune, Richlands, Dixon are all real weak programs on a yearly basis. Croatan had a short run but will return to normal & the rats have "jumped the ship" at SWO. Just my opinion but EC will be the class of the league. This will be a fun conference to coach in with lots of potential rivalries.

You're right. EC is having a good run of athletes. And the coaching has been terrible the past 3 years. Before King that is.

Appreciate it to Earnhardt. Perry does a great job at Croatan. SWO will be good again soon. Dixon, Pender, Trask could all be competitive in that conference. Lejuene will always be subject to who they have moving in and moving out. East is a tough place to coach. Especially when you take over after 2 winless seasons and have 17 players the first day of official practice in 2011. Was a tough but worthwhile building experience. Things are much better there now and they will remain competitive. If they expand the lines they will be real strong and hurt West Carteret even more.
