I don't know how you "privatize the military". I mean, I know that contractors exist, but they do a little security work on the side, at best. But I would be willing to see how they might measure up for a few things, here and there. Some manage to pay better than active duty, but without the benefits and you'd better be ready to take your chances. The DOD bureaucracy can also be a nightmare, believe me about that.
I'm also an army retiree and I definitely want better accountability from the DOD. Seriously, they've never passed an audit and I've seen first-hand how they waste billions. Some of it is pure pork as well, but that's part of the deal. They spread the spending around to places it isn't really needed to keep virtually every member of the House and Senate on side and playing ball. There are cuts that could be made in all sorts of places, but the details would have to be worked out.
We're hopelessly in debt and I don't think we can tax our way out of it, so unless we can streamline what the government does and bring spending under control, we're screwed. That's the way I approach it.
