FALL CHAMPIONSHIPS UPDATE: Many playoffs delayed by flooding in eastern NC

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors and Commissioner Que Tucker have made the difficult decision to move playoff dates following historic flooding in many parts of eastern North Carolina.

“The logistics of moving the fall championships dates, especially this close to the events are complex; however, we must do everything in our power to do what is best for our student-athletes in the state,” said Commissioner Que Tucker. “Keeping our young people safe as we try to minimize risk of injury must be paramount in our decisions.”

No Shrine Bowl?Or like the old days just use players not playing in championships.

I understand why this is being done, but am curious about one thing. If you are a team whose season ends on time on November 5th, but you're not sure whether you will make the playoffs, do you practice for another week, perhaps in vain? And how does that affect athletes who also play a winter sport whose practices will have already started?
Not criticizing the decision, but it does create a quandary at some schools on the bubble.

You may or may not know exactly who your opponent will be but it gives an advantage to the western teams to get kids healed and maybe spend an extra week preparing for a team. Announcement or not most will know except bubble teams and one seeds.

What a nightmare for wrestling and basketball programs that football makes the playoffs.

Hope those affected by the floods are seeing recovery. My neighbors brother has been cutoff in all directions from food, gas, and travel. Road is washed out on both sides of his home. I imagine this is a problem lots of places.

Some of the eastern teams affected by flooding my have an opportunity to heal up for a stretch run. And Bye before play offs not always welcome if you are playing well.

I was glad to see decision made. Otherwise teams were looking at 4 games in a 15-day period. Not exactly in the athletes best interest. I guess one advantage of the bloated playoffs in all sports is even if a winter sport gets off to a slow start chances of making playoffs is still strong if team is legitimate contender.

I have heard that some of the schools that got flooded lost all football equipment along with everything else. Are the local surrounding schools helping out by loaning/giving those schools equipment so the kids can still play? Cant image what the communities and schools systems face.

Like old days. SC went to five round playoff this year and were on same schedule as NC. They added a week due to hurricane just like in NC.
