If a team does a on side kick and it hits the ground first and goes high, is the fair catch off or on?

In high school, I believe the reverse of this, is that the kicking team cannot catch the ball in the air unless it has hit the ground, even if it has gone 10 yards or more....seen this happen before and the receiving team was awarded the ball at the spot where the kicking team caught the ball in the air (just like would be the case on a punt caught in the air by the kicking team)

Actually K can't even touch the ball while it's in flight. Not only does R get the ball, they also get an additional 15 yards tacked on to the spot of the foul.

Got a great kicker? This would be a great time for a FGA from a free kick formation after an awarded fair catch..

So apparently you can call for a fair catch in college, it happened in a game yesterday. Because a player called for a fair catch the kicking team could not recover the kick.

Oklahoma State player smartly
exploits NCAA fair catch rule to
ruin a Texas Tech onside kick

receiving teams holding onto a lead late
in a game should instruct their players to
call for a fair catch as soon as an onside
kick one-hops toward them since the fair
catch signal deprives the kicking team of the
opportunity to recover the kick.

NCAA rules allow a fair catch of a pop-up kick.

A pop-up kick is illegal under NFHS rules.
