North Davidson Coach Resigns

We have been discussing this in the MPC threads for the last week and a half, and as I said there, the wording of that announcement was way too generous. The comment at the end of that Journal article states what has been circulating in the community here. I don't think it's a coincidence that he is resigning just after that came out.

ETA - I now see that the Journal has removed the comment.

Removed comment? What did the comment say? Freedom of speech.

What a disgraceful exist. I tried to be thoughtful about his departure but hearing what happened and then that there as an attempt at a cover up. Yeah kids need to be yelled at and I had a coach who laid into us like we had just robbed a bank cause we were playing like absolute clowns and boy I mean he gave it to us. I got no problem running a kid till the cows come home, benching him and kicking him off the team. But there is a line a coach shouldn’t cross in discipline. This isn’t Varsity blues, these are teenagers who make mistakes.

Freedom of speech doesn't apply to a privately owned website, and I respect Deana's wish to limit undocumented accusations.

I don't have Facebook, but I understand that there is a very lively discussion about this topic on the Lexington Dispatch Facebook page where the same guidelines might not apply.

I still think about Mark Holcomb whom I played for. Total class, loved all of his kids, always tried to bring out the best in all of us. And this is what we ended up after him. Shameful. I know blackknightnut played for him for two years.

I still can’t believe he’s gonna be teaching the rest of the year. Boy that’s awkward.

I always knew there had to be something when a school has an NFL player from their school and he holds camp at another down the road with his former coach and not his former school, even after that coach has moved on to another school.

I never played for Flynn. I played for Holcomb for three years and Fleming for one. Those two wouldn't have done this and would not have let their assistants do this.

I got along with Flynn when I met him. I liked him. I also saw the head coaching job change him into a completely different person than the guy I got along with. The ego is a crazy thing for some people and it changes you into a different person when you get a bit of power in some cases...

When I played we had coaches that called us pus*** for being out injured. Even after the doctor and JV head coach Byerly refused to let them play because they wanted them to heal up. I never saw anyone get physically assaulted by a coach but there were certainly those on staff who didn't deserve their spots just like some still on the staff don't deserve their spot. From a performance standpoint and also a social standpoint when you have thousands of people watching you act like a clown.

This goes all the way back to over a decade ago, after I graduated. Certain things have been swept under the rug for a long time. Not just regarding players but also students and especially girls...

A few years ago one of our coaches was reprimanded by the county for acting like a clown. The very next week he acted like a clown again. Nothing happened. It was swept under the rug.

This whole situation is sad. It is a tragedy. And the most tragic thing is that North and DCS are more than willing to save their reputation by sweeping thing after thing under the rug when everyone and their momma knows the whole story at this point. Pathetic...

Shy is from Midway. No surprise he does things at Oak Grove and I don't blame him

Now let's talk about the football side. When these guys came down from 4A to 2A they acted like world beaters. Yet there were signs even early on that trouble was brewing.

It's easy to get shutouts week after week against Davidson County directional schools. Or against sophomore and juniors at Oak Grove. The first sign we were in trouble was giving up twenty plus points to an outmanned Lexington. The next was East Duplin running up and down the field without making them punt once. They had a great team but do you see what I'm getting at?

The loss to Ledford in the regular season year two was a fluke but also never should have been able to happen in the first place. The second game for the Regional Title proved it. Ledford was good but not great especially on offense and we gift-wrapped that first game for them. Then Shelby showed us what a real championship program was. Their offense and defense were both in sync to go along with top notch coaching.

Year three was an expected down year especially after losing the starting qb. But there were sparks of light as well for the future. Unfortunately it also began the talk of transfers especially from Lexington and made people start looking sideways at the program. Hertford really put it to us a week after vindication against Oak Grove from the loss earlier in the season.

Year four (spring season) was a great year but the loss to Salisbury in the Regional was also the most heartbreaking. That was Norths best chance at State that I've ever witnessed. It simply wasn't meant to be.

3A ball has humbled North. Playing 4A and 3A varsity sized rosters against 2A schools gave us a false sense of security. Our weak conference has also done the same. When numbers and talent are equal it's far different. Crest showed us what real 3A playoff ball is.

And then the bottom fell out last year. Recruiting charges. Giving up 30 points a game. Losing to Ledford more often had become an expected thing, even if unacceptable back in the day. Losing to Central is another thing entirely. I can count on my hand the number of times we have lost to Central in our history as a school, from 2A in the 60s to present day. And the ironic thing is the coaches on staff that were Central grads are absolutely loathed by Central people, from first hand talks.

Things have to change. They must change. This has become embarrassing. Both on and off the field. And to any who say it's easy to criticize when you don't coach, I've never been involved with a losing team when I have coached. I've never put hands on my players other than to give them resistance (not all out) during a drill. And I never had the most talent or biggest numbers against my competitors. We were the second smallest school in terms of both numbers and talent. Rant over...

It's also not a good situation for trying to bring in a good coach. Some candidates don't want an ex head coach with the maturity of a 3 year old in their school. Especially if several of his cronies are still on staff.
so what exactly did he do?? im missing parts of this story

To be as politically correct as I can, from my understanding he "allegedly" laid his hands on a player. I am not a fan but I wont speak any more than this from just what I have "heard". There is a thread on The Lexington Dispatch on Facebook.

whats crazy to me is it was bad enough to lose your coaching job but not teaching job? I think this is a double standard
Very common practice everywhere. The two jobs are not tied together. Not defending anything that has supposedly happened here.

byerly was the absolute best. He taught us more about guts and heart than any coach I ever had. Only had him for one year but I’ll never forget him. A lot of life lessons from him.

No. I was referring to the WS Journal, not on here.

Davidson County Schools struggle with the “good ol boy” mentality. This includes all the HS in the county (ND, CD, ED, SD, WD, OG and Ledford). I attended a HS in Davidson County and it doesn’t seem that much has changed (I no longer live in Davidson Co).
Obviously, all schools/school systems have their own issues/concerns, but it might not hurt DCS to do some self reflection and take hires outside of Davidson County.

I have always said the same thing. I did not grow up in Davidson county but I raised my kids here. Had all 3 kids play sports throughout their careers with 2 different DC schools and saw the "good ol boy" mentality played out WAY too many times. I have my favorite now but have already seen changes since my kids graduated and still follow them but not as much as I used to.

Been screaming for years this "Good ole Boys" network ruins Davidson athletics. Just look at all the schools coaching staff in Davidson not named Thomasville or Lexington. ZERO DIVERSITY!!! As a high school teacher myself I am just shocked the school admins haven't made better efforts to house or field a better/more diverse staff and coaches

Outsiders seem to be run out anytime success happens or changes. Those who stink it up and make little to no effort keep coaching jobs. Same for those who act like immature children?

The truth. Since 2008....
Overlook and cover up...
If you are referring to what I think you are referring to, we don’t know that for SURE. I heard some stuff but it mostly felt like high school guys making stuff up with one another. Now if it is true and I don’t know one way or another…

What I do know as an absolute fact and it’s not hidden one bit is the fact that the same NDHS had a theatre teacher marry his former student. Both were teachers the same time, so idk maybe something in the teachers water cooler.

Good thing no Coach ever slapped me. My Dad is a former Green Beret. Underwater demolition specialist. It would not have been purdy.
