What’s the word at NHHS? How much attention should this job garner? What’s the future look like down on Market?

there talent in that school for sure. Obviously it’s a competitive area and It’s a beautiful city as well . I think it could draw some good interest

I haven’t heard who is interested but I am not as connected as I used to be. NH is moving down to 7A. Back in the mid 1990’s the program was really strong. A few years after Joe Miller retired we hired a fella from Florida and passed on Scott Braswell. ( at least that is the word). It was a huge mistake and for about 6-7 years the program was awful until they hired Earl Smith. Smith got the program back on the right track but left after a few years with unfinished business. After Smith left, Kevin Motsinger took over and was able to continue building the program. Mot left for WRH and Earl Smith returned and won a 3A state championship in 2017 before he retired.

New Hanover is the smallest of the area schools and the racial makeup is roughly 50/50. It’s a great school. My father and mother and my wife and I attended NHHS. Great years. We sent our daughter to NHHS although she was districted to Hoggard. According to her, one of the best decisions she made. I can’t remember the exact term but New Hanover county is open choice, if space is available. Even though Wilmington is not a large city, NHHS is considered an inner city school. Largely unfounded, but many think the area is dangerous and it is not the preferred school district for the local real estate agents.

I can tell you this, no school in the county has the tradition of NHHS and with the right coach it can be very competitive despite some of the challenges. Hopefully we can get the right coach.

The rollercoaster of coaching drama is like watching a squirrel on a sugar high! New Hanover pulling a comeback like it's in a feel-good movie with Earl and Kevin flexing their coaching muscles! If NH snag the right coach to channel that wild alumni spirit and pride, NH basically on a rocket ride back to glory town!

Reno to New Hanover

The school system seems invested. 7.6 million is a lot of money for 16 classrooms and 10 offices. Not too sure if that's smart money or not. Seems that the majority of the public would like to move on from throwing money at that school. As the poster mentioned before the county is open but it has several factors. You have to be approved by a committee, or hardship that principals have to approve. Or you can apply to the program within the separate schools.

A program with a state championship and 3 other east region finals to go along with 7 10 win seasons over the past 15 seasons should draw some interest. Hoggard has control over the area now. NH, Ashley and Laney are all fighting for second place. This is a critical hire for NHHS. The right guy could get things turned around fairly quickly.

It’s all about coaching no matter what type of athletes you have. Unfortunately there is not a line of great coaches to choose from.

That is actually not nearly as "expensive" as it might feel. Johnston County just spent I think 13~ million for like 24~ classrooms in an expansion at Cleveland High. Unfortunately building public buildings, especially schools, costs a lot of money.

I know its easy to sit and say it's insanely overpriced, you have to remember there's good reason for some of these rules and hoops businesses have to jump through. The most obvious one - who are these workers that will be on a school campus around kids? That's a lot of background checks you don't have to do to build a road or office building. I'll also state, I'm not questioning that it's over charged - I'm just saying it's maybe not over charged as much as it may seem.

Unusually quite with zero names coming out of this job? Cordinators, in state or out of state?
Very hard to get good coaches in the area when the cost of living continues to go up in NH, Pender, and Brunswick counties, but teacher pay, and coach pay continues to stay stagnant. I'm sure plenty of great coaches want to move to the area, but the coaching supplements do not make it worth it for many big names!

It just got interesting with Teachey leaving Topsail for Texas Tech. I think some would argue that THS is a better situation than NH. Still get the beach life at a cheaper price in Pender county

NH is 13-1 against Topsail. Add to that, NH won a state championship in 2017 and has 3 other East region championship appearances in the last 15 years. In the last 12 seasons (since Topsail joined the MEC) NH is 60-16 in the conference with 4 MEC titles and no conference losing records while Topsail is 29-50 in the conference with 9 losing conference records and no MEC titles.

Different atmospheres for sure (Hampstead / Pender County vs. Wilmington / New Hanover County) and there are certainly different strokes for different folks, but I think NH is the better opportunity. Both are 7A and the football in 7A is going to be ridiculously hard. That, to me is the biggest deterrent for both jobs. However, NH provides the best chance to win and compete in 7A.

Topsail is in a much better place now than they were thanks to the Teachey Experiment. There is a reason he is moving on to the Big 12. But Pender county politics makes growing a program nearly impossible. Anyone that knows the area and the history knows that there is a constant revolving door of principals and other admin just looking to make a name for themselves so that they can either bounce to NH county for more pay, or ride off into the sunset and retire at the beach. NHHS is a gold-mine, and if someone can get a good staff there, they will be dangerous in 7A.

I own a home in Wilmington and two in Fayetteville. I haven't lived in the Wilmington house since August 2005
But I pay substantially larger property taxes on my Fayetteville homes than I do on my Wilmington house. A huge difference in taxes, and My Wilmington home is approximately 1000 more square feet than one of the Fayetteville homes. I haven't lived or worked in Wilmington since 2005 but I can only say in my case property tax in Wilmington is much lower than Fayetteville (Cumberland County). I would have thought the taxes would be higher in a coastal city. But insurance for property is definitely higher in Wilmington than Fayetteville, mainly due to wind and hail polocies due to threat of hurricane. My home is in the Laney school district but my rooting interest is with Hoggard based on when they were in the conference with all the Fayetteville schools when I was a school age kid growing up in Fayetteville.

That was 2005 brother.... I don't know many high school football coaches that can afford 3 homes like yourself! But if you're selling.... maybe NHHS or Topsail can include that home in the coaching supplement!

But Im paying taxes still. Tax base on property is higher (significantly) in Fayetteville than Wilmington and Id have to imagine it would be higher for sure in Raleigh and Charlotte or other parts of NC as well. I'm just asking because you suggested that pay and cost of living in Wilmington and surrounding countries is driving coaches away or detering them from coming to Wilmington. Nothing personal.

Nothing personal at all! I just know some coaches in the area. The pay in Pender definitely does not stack up with Raleigh or CLT. New Hanover is much better. But with the way this area is growing things are beginning to get more expensive with more folks moving in.
