What’s the word at NHHS? How much attention should this job garner? What’s the future look like down on Market?
The rollercoaster of coaching drama is like watching a squirrel on a sugar high! New Hanover pulling a comeback like it's in a feel-good movie with Earl and Kevin flexing their coaching muscles! If NH snag the right coach to channel that wild alumni spirit and pride, NH basically on a rocket ride back to glory town!I haven’t heard who is interested but I am not as connected as I used to be. NH is moving down to 7A. Back in the mid 1990’s the program was really strong. A few years after Joe Miller retired we hired a fella from Florida and passed on Scott Braswell. ( at least that is the word). It was a huge mistake and for about 6-7 years the program was awful until they hired Earl Smith. Smith got the program back on the right track but left after a few years with unfinished business. After Smith left, Kevin Motsinger took over and was able to continue building the program. Mot left for WRH and Earl Smith returned and won a 3A state championship in 2017 before he retired.
New Hanover is the smallest of the area schools and the racial makeup is roughly 50/50. It’s a great school. My father and mother and my wife and I attended NHHS. Great years. We sent our daughter to NHHS although she was districted to Hoggard. According to her, one of the best decisions she made. I can’t remember the exact term but New Hanover county is open choice, if space is available. Even though Wilmington is not a large city, NHHS is considered an inner city school. Largely unfounded, but many think the area is dangerous and it is not the preferred school district for the local real estate agents.
I can tell you this, no school in the county has the tradition of NHHS and with the right coach it can be very competitive despite some of the challenges. Hopefully we can get the right coach.
