Mount Airy/East Surry

Bears last win: ‘18 regular season finale
Lost in playoffs that same year and have not won since…missed ‘21 season due to Covid so streak is at 4
We have our winner! Poindexter and Smith drove them down the field in a two minute drill. Last snap Smith takes it in the Wildcat formation for the TD to win the '18 conference championship. That was Lowman's first year at East. Gosnell and Boaz both were QB's that year but Boaz played the position for most of this game.. D Greene and Gosnell all over each other all night. Bears would eventually lose to the Cards in the playoffs 40-0 when Greene was out and Smith was hurt.

ES & MA has pretty close win & lose records and played since i believe the 1960s before their name changed. I don't remember the first time they beat MA but I bet I was there.
East Surry name change was in 1973. Cardinals first win over Mt. Airy was October 31st 1975.

If I remember correctly, Greg Greene caught a skip pass that appeared to hit the ground (but wasn’t called) in the right flat and then cut back across the left and took it probably 60-65yds for a score. That TD shouldn’t have counted, but ES still had a chance to stop the Bears and secure the win. Great last drive by MA to seal the deal and win a conference championship. Some amazing talent on the field there in both 2018 and 2019.

Spring 21 game and Fall 22 game were both tight contests that the Cards were able to hold on and win. 2019 and 2015 were big ES wins. Really wish we could have seen the Fall 21 matchup that got cancelled due to the Covid outbreak. That would have been another close contest that could have gone either way. Several other close games going back through 2017, 2016 (game 1), and 2014. May not be close this year with MA having the generational athletic team that they possess, but I’d still love to see these 2 schools back in conference together in the near future!

In that same game ES recovered a fumble while his foot was out of bounds also. Guess it evened out. Bears were looking to score on that drive.

I want to attend this game so badly but not going through this crowd looking for a parking place and walking forever to get in! It very well could set an attendance record for Surry County. If it was at Mount Airy, I would be there at 6 pm and wait.

If you can't make the game tune in here !
Thank You >>>

I'm not sure the East Surry fans will fill their side. It's not going to be close

Because white top white pants are tradition and look better! Everyone has there own preference, and thats ok!

I liked what MA coach Adkins had to say in interview that they would treat it like a playoff atmosphere and be focused this game. This game will be very physical!

Sounds good, but hopefully they will have that mindset ever game. Like REWhitley was saying before season, whatever is going on between the players ears will determine how far they go this year, talent or not. We saw that in 2021.

Iredell, Mecklenburg and many other counties are delaying start of Friday's games until 8 PM due to heat. Starmount-North Iredell has changed the start time.
Has anyone heard anything this game ?

MA is pre-saling tickets at MAHS main office from 11-2pm Friday according to Go Bear Athletics on Facebook.

East Surry pre-sale Thursday and Friday at the school 7:30-3:30 both days according to East Surry High School facebook.

Haven't heard anything about change of gametime yet.

MA Coach Adkins already said treating this as a playoff atmosphere and game!

How ‘bout the first time East Surry beat Mount Airy???
Sorry for late response. Just saw this!
1975. ES 27 MA 15. Series began in 1963, but they did not play from 1966-1970. Bears won the first 8 games.
MA holds edge with 37-21 record.
HOWEVER,
Last 20 games record is 10-10! Last 22 it is 11-11. Last 36 games (since 1989) the record is 18-18 with both teams having dominating periods. Before 1989, there wasn't much of a rivalry.

Don't think they get a lot of time to pass but if they do we can't give them free yards with penalties

We will definitely get ESurry's "best shot"!!! They will be fired up to defend their home turf. We will need to match their physicality without silly penalties (no personal fouls/unsportsmanlike conducts). I have been impressed with this teams discipline. Don't think they match up well with our speed!!! Wishing both teams good health.

East only had 1.25 yds a carry on us.
They had a couple 30/40 yd passes on our Defense. One pass went to the 1 yd line.
We held to 4th and goal at the 3 then Calhoun came from middle linebacker and stop the runner in the back field. Hard hit but the kid got right back up. East just didn't seem physical.
We had 18 penalties or it would've been over half way through the second

MA will be up 42-00 at half.

89 game East Surry won in OT! Winner had to win to make playoffs.
