MAC - week 1

Side note on Erwin's 2015 schedule.

Mt. Paran is ranked 8th preseason in their division.

Ootlewah 5th in TN 5A.

Science Hill 7th in TN 6A.

Like stated above stay healthy and this schedule can only help us improve as a team. Hats off to Sexton and staff for making these schedule changes.

I agree. I am never happy with a loss but it will only make you better playing these type teams. That team has some new guys that moved in from all over GA that will make them just as good. They have that luxury being a private school.

I kind of agree with this. I think dropping the teams we did was a good thing, but why could we not find any good teams to play in NC that was closer to the 3A level. Playing these 5/6A schools with over a 100 players could demoralize your team. I said the same thing about Reynolds when they had such a brutal schedule a few years ago and started out 1-5, or something like that. How does that help your program?

It's the first game and 20 sounded like a good round number.BD do you know who it was Erwin or Pisgah that decided not to play each other?

I have heard that Pisgah did, but that might just be hearsay. I don't see why Pisgah would drop Erwin and pick up Asheville if they were looking for a easier non conference opponent. I loved the rivalry with Pisgah. The games were usually competitive and the schools are very close. There is no sense to play a team 3 hrs away when you have one 20 min away.

I get what you Erwin guys are saying about playing teams 3 hours away, but look at it this way. With the schedules Asheville, Reynolds and Erwin are now playing, you're going to see all three teams get better each year. Like it or not, we three are MAC teams and get laughed at by the football heros in the east of the state. The level of teams we all three are playing in our non-con schedules will undoubtedly make all three of us better. Personally I know the fans of Asheville, Reynolds and Erwin want to see their own team win a state title, but as long as anyone from the MAC wins the big show I'm happy.

From what I understand, Pisgah wanted to pick up Asheville instead of Erwin because Asheville's style of play is more similar to Franklin. And Franklin is who Pisgah has to beat to win the conference. I guess they feel Asheville better prepares them for how Franklin plays.

You have a good point COUGAR90. Those 3 teams are the only ones in Buncombe County to ever play for a state title. Obviously Reynolds and Asheville have had much better teams historically than Erwin, but right now these 3 teams are the best programs in the county. I figure if Erwin can pull a upset on one of the 3 out of state teams it will be a success. The bad thing is we play a much improved Heritage team away, and also Franklin. The good news is at least we start the conference out with a easy one vs Reynolds...haha.

I think it's much more of a how can our team improve situation. We were limited in our improvement by playing East Rutherford, Madison, and North Henderson when we played them.

We could literally just out athlete those teams, and not really have to work for it. Playing the out of state teams and Franklin is certainly an uphill climb, but it will much better prepare Erwin to compete with teams like Asheville. The last few years every time we have played Asheville They are by far the most physical and athletic team we have seen at that point. This year that probably won't be the case.

Sucks having to drive and play out of state teams, but there are some teams locally that will not play us and then teams we have no business playing like Madison.

Good point ehswarrior. When Reynolds plays west Forsyth and Shelby, seeing ashevilles athletes is no big deal. When we play west high school or ashbrook, playing you guys or Reynolds isn't as glaring. When Erwin plays teams like science hill it makes it far easier when you play us or Reynolds. It definitely prepares you more for the playoffs and against the better Mac teams.

I pretty much agree. The only issue I have is what if Erwin loses to all three out of state teams and Franklin as well. That means they start the season 1-4 and that can demoralize a team for sure. They are a good team just like Reynolds was that year they played Shelby, SP, and WF. I understand getting rid of Madison and the others we did because beating teams 55-7 does not help you. I would have like to added some teams like Kings Mtn or Freedom. They have enough speed to get you ready for the playoffs but they are much closer in size to Erwin. I am not complaining at all. I am actually excited to see new teams, but I also am realistic to what might happen.

BD, starting off the season at possibly 1 and 4 may suck, but if Erwin is looking to gain respect they are on the right track with this new schedule. If you guys get the piss beat out of you by an out of state championship team no ones gonna say much. On the other hand, if ya'll pull off the upset..............
Look at Crest. They walked away with a ring last year and deservedly so, but there are still a bunch of people saying they didn't earn it because of how easy their schedule was. When you play teams that push you to the limit you'll see people around the state starting to take you seriously. That's what Sexton is starting to do now. I'm still not an Erwin fan, but like I said, at the end of the season we're all still a big messed up family and I want to see someone from the MAC bring home a ring.

I think there is a fine line with the scheduling. I liked our schedule last year. If you play 3-4 teams that are likely gonna kick your ass that isn't helpful at all. Playing 1-2 games against a team like that is. If you play a really hard schedule and end up 7-4 in the regular season and then drop the 1 loss, you get a 7-3 record going into the playoffs and a crappy seed. Then you end up playing a state champion caliber team in round 2. Last year Asheville was favored in all their games except 1. We knew there was a good chance Knoxville west was gonna beat us, and they did. We finish 10-1, drop the loss and then we got a 1 seed for the playoffs and were still tested.

The way the play offs are set up if you lose three or four games you will be lucky to get one game at home. You can only drop one loss.

Play against the best competition and see where your team stands. Thats why a respect Mallard Creek. Alot of teams dont deserve home games in the playoffs and they get expose "freedom" just an example. This year they're starting off with Shelby. Smart move by them

Yea I agree but testing yourself and playing 4 teams that are gonna demolish you and prevent you from getting 1 home game in the playoffs and a 2nd round exit are 2 different things.

Mallard Creek is absolutely loaded with talent from all over Charlotte. Playing tough competition for them is hard because they are the best team in NC. I agree with Ahscougar1. Playing 3-4 teams that will demolish you will not help your team in any way.

Playing at home doesn't gurantee you wins or championships in the playoffs.

Getting demolished by 3-4 teams means your team isn't that good anyways. ACR had great playoff runs after playing tough schedules. Erwin has not. This year could only help them.

Asheville got behind West Knox and couldn't come back. Got behind Weddington and didn't know how to come back. Throwing to 2 receivers while Weddington was dropping 6 DBs! Asheville had halftime shutout leads on ACR and Erwin and didn't try to put them away. The offense only ran the ball and put all the pressure on the defense to win the game. Experience is more valuable than wins.

I hate to say it but there might not be a team in nc that is worse with a lead than Asheville high. We are also not built to make comebacks like you brought up regarding last year billy28804. We aren't a run first team, we are a run only team. So when we get down, we go into panic mode and start trying to be something we aren't trying to come back throwing the ball everywhere. You look at the weddington game last year (which we got screwed on) and we ran all over them in the first half and then in the second half they shut us down pretty good and we looked completely lost on what to do. When we are up, we have given up big leads and when we are down we have an extremely hard time coming back. There is a running joke in the stands that when it's 3rd and 12 and we are on defense, that's when we are most likely to give up a first down. We have got to learn to put people away and close out games. It's been tough watching several Asheville teams the last couple years underachieve in the playoffs. The conference championships are great but by now they don't mean much.

Asheville did come back on Weddington, just couldn't punch the ball in and had to deal with some questionable calls, or lack thereof the last couple possessions. Knoxville West was just a better team. I think we have a harder time holding onto a lead than we do coming back. You look back over the years and we have numerous marquee comebacks. The biggest issue I've seen the last few seasons is we don't step on people's throats like we should sometimes(i.e. Reynolds, Erwin last year). To be fair though, Erwin or Reynolds never got closer than 2 scores in the 2nd half.

That is so true on the third and longs Ahscougar1. Seems we have a better percentage of stopping teams if it's 3rd and 5 or shorter than we do if it's 3rd and 10 or longer. As an Asheville fan, you just have to live with what we do offensively. We are a smash-mouth power run team. Against most teams we can run it down their throats. Against the Weddigton's and Crest's of the world though with a big, fast defense, we are going to be in a dog fight. Similar to a triple option team like south point, we live and die by the run.

I guess I look at Acr and the last 2 years through 7 games they have been 3-4 and 2-5. They have played loaded schedules but are prepared come playoff time.

Our kids have to know we are going to take some lumps most likely but as long as we stay healthy it will help us improve, and who knows we could be anywhere from 1-5 to 6-0. I do know our kids will be well prepared the week of the Reynolds game though.

At least our jvs get first shot at smashing those little green boogers tonight.

Jk Reynolds fans nothing but respect for the rockets.

How's the jv's looking? I'm pretty sure ours are pretty thin with a good amount of soph. listed on the varsity roster and getting significant playing time.

With the officiating the way it is in WNC, I would just as soon play on the road in the playoffs. I am not saying it is bad against one team or the other. I just think it is bad all the way around. I will say that when we travel east just a little bit, the officiating improves 10 fold.

By the third round you get refs from down east and the refs Asheville and Weddington had last year were terrible!

I was about to ask didn't Asheville have some very questionable calls go against them in the 3rd round last year?

3rd round games have refs that are picked by the Nchsaa correct?

The refs from last years 3rd round weddington game were an absolute joke. Nobody expects the refs to be perfect but they were a disaster. I hope those guys never officiate again. How pathetic that is what you get in the 3rd round. They should be officiating middle school softball somewhere.

Erwin always gets ol mickey mouse every year for the 1st rd games. That man should not be officiating any athletic contest. He is so bad.

Enka beat Owen 26-6. Idk where all the kids come from but they had 54 JVs dressed out. They looked pretty athletic. Most of our JV is freshmen trying to figure it out but they mauled us up front.

Just a heads up. The Iwanna has a great football section this week. I thought they had stopped doing it but I was wrong.

Well, good luck to ALL the MAC teams tonight gentlemen. Here's to a great season for all of us, injury free and good referees all around. That goes for you too BD, you butthole. Just kidding man. Hope the Warriors send Mt. Paran back to Georgia with a big fat L tonight. ;)

Haha..I am trying to be nice this season. It won't last long..

Erwin 21 Mt Paran 20 at halftime. For those of you wondering about MP, they are good. They remind me of a more athletic version of Charlotte Catholic. Their running game is almost unstoppable. I have been impressed with Erwin's passing game. Damien Ferguson has 3td passes and looks much improved. Just hope we can hold these guys off.
