Tough matchup against rich tradition Lincolnton in the first conference game in the South Fork League. Hoping for a good game and packed stadium inside Gurley Stadium.
Probably won't be a good night for the Wolves after the beat downs they've given Newton the last few years.
Yea, we are still a young team. Last year 85% of our key players were sophomores that lead our varsity team to a 6-5 record. Now we are a junior lead class this year, but last year in 5 of our losses, 3 of them were winnable games and we lost by less than a td. We could have easily went 8-3 or 9-2 last year.Heck West Lincoln showed em' up last year. Apparently they had a lot of youngesters last year that have improved and are out for revenge

Yes i was at NC middle in the late 80sDid u happen to go to N-C middle in the 80s or 90s?
I remember that impressive team Hickory high had and the funny thing about that year was Newton was the closest game in score they played that year. Even the state championship game was a dog-out. Hky set several state records like: most points scored, least amount of points allowed, average margin of victory, and many more that i cant recall but i do remember there were several records set that year.Well, sounds like you guys and Freedom are starting a dynasty. Young teams produce year after and so on. I remember a Hickory high team in 94' FULL of Soph and Jrs get waxed, 95' they made some noise but Shelby shut em up. 96' they seemed like the most unbeatable team in the state and cruised through the playoffs and raised the trophy.... still good the next year but fell off hard.
How far can Newton Conover go?

That hky offensive line was huge, it literally looked like a pro team in comparison to other high school teams that year. Yea i think that was one of the board rules about emails...Heck of a team I tell ya. For some reason I thought Freedom was their hardest opponent that season but if Newton was then good .
Is it forbidden to post email addresses on here?

Well I was just gonna say my great uncle was ur principal. Don't say his name on here cause it'd be a dead giveaway as to my identity ha ha. That's another board rule which is good to have i would guess. He was a good man, died bout 9 years ago
I know who you are talking about and he was a great man and I remember him well. Sorry for your loss.Well I was just gonna say my great uncle was ur principal. I really wanted to see an in-county matchup between hky and bandys that year because they both were dominate forces against their competition.I think Hickory 96' coulda been beat but it woulda took a team like Crest, West Charlotte(back then), or Richmond Sr. Even then that'd been questionable BUT Crest was also unstoppable and won the 4A that year so that'd been a heck of a matchup.
I believe our kids took that loss personally and look to fuel a hunger that will give us a real good chance to win a conference championship, and maybe make some noise in the playoffs.Hopefully Newton doesn't have a hangover from the Hibriten game. Knowing the bulk of this team the way I do those kids will bounce back and use that Hibriten game as fuel to destroy the rest of their competition. I know Lincolnton is down this year but they will put up a fight and not roll over. I would have to say Newton by 3-4 TD's in this one

I remember that 2012 squad to and they had a good year too.Appreciate it man. I do miss em although I never really went to his house and talked to him or hung out with em plus we never or rarely had reunions. He was an interesting man none the less and i got to share this ha ha- he ran off with the circus when he was only 13 years old, well that musta ran its course then he joined the Navy at only 14 years old, somehow got my g grandparents to lie bout his age for him. I think he missed WWII cause he was the youngest out of all the sibs. After the Navy he found finished all his schooling (high school first I'd imagine) which included App State and WCU. Was a Hall of Fame BBall coach at Cherryville HS. Later on, you know the rest . His grandson my cousin of whom don't know me from Adam played for N-C in 2012- Josh McGee Lb #10
He had such a beautiful house and the fish ponds were amazing...I did a lot of the brickwork for him....Well I was just gonna say my great uncle was ur principal. Also was the only principal to give me the paddle...He had such a beautiful house and the fish ponds were amazing...I did a lot of the brickwork for him....
Lincolnton is never down long and i expect a physical game Friday night. What is your take on the other Lincoln county teams this year? I was surprised to hear that East Burke tripped up W. Lincoln last week.No packed house for this year's contest. Maybe full for the Newton side. Lincolnton waaaaaay down. Newton by 30.

Sounds like these two bring different approaches and should be considered the key matchup in Lincoln county Friday night.Other Lincoln games:
North vs West- a good test and more on the line for both schools on this game. On paper and my thoughts it could go either way. North brings a much improved offense and a great QB that can get the ball to the player if given time in the pocket and CAN and WILL do that against West, there's no question BUT defense seems to be a problem. Therefore if West keeps the ground game going and clock ticking the game is theirs considering the NL defense. I can't put it much different than the newspaper did, may come down to most mistake free team and whoever has ball last.
