Legion Baseball

I am familiar with Area II South. I don’t know anything about the North. Not sure where Buggy Town is.

Rowan will host Davidson Co at Newman Park this Wednesday at 7pm in the playoffs

What happened ER, y’all start your team back and Randolph couldn’t lock up all the Randolph county talent?
Well see what had happened was…

Think actually the story really was since Post 81 didn’t field a team last season, the players that played elsewhere could continue to play there. I know one pitcher did but Asheboro still couldn’t pick and choose like they did last year.
Also with the new Chatham Co team, glad to see that by the way, several HS they used to draw from now feed that team. Liberty (ugh) fielded a young Legion team this year, and an even younger junior team. If they can keep the boys coming should be pretty good in a couple of years.

Cat scratch,

Just curious, where is Buggy Town?
Carthage, in Moore County, is known as Buggy Town...I'm assuming its because they used to ride horse and buggies in and about town. Buggy Town plays their games at Union Pines High School.
P.S. What field/stadium does the Asheville Legion team use for their baseball events ? Thanks in advance.
The following paragraph was copied and pasted.

The Tysons and Jones Buggy Company earned the reputation for producing the "Cadillac of carriages." The horse-drawn buggy factory brought property to Carthage that is still apparent today when looking at many of the old homes around the town.

Post 82 over Burke 12-1 in 6. Colby Putnam had a grand slam in the 6th then Steven Spaes hit a 2 run homer to end it early. Putnam went the distance for the win.

It appears the Asheville Post 70 squad has " tryouts " at T. C. Roberson and play their games at West Henderson High School.
P.S. Since Whiteville evidently is not fielding a Legion team this year, are their players playing for Tabor City ? I've never heard of a Legion team in Tabor City before this year. Its also hard to phantom Area III only having eight teams participating. Hats off to the coaches, players, fans, and sponsors that are still danglin' by a thread.

Back in the 1970s - 1990s, Whiteville Post 137 was one of the best teams in the east. I am not sure when they stopped regularly fielding teams but it has been on and off over the last decade.
Back in the day, Post 137 drew kids from Nakina, Williams Township, Tabor City, Whiteville, Hallsboro, Clarkton, East Bladen, and Bladenboro.

Several of these high schools were consolidated into South Columbus just outside of Tabor City. I believe their legion coach is the S. Columbus head coach. Whiteville players are on the Tabor City team.

It’s difficult for me to understand the legion baseball decline. I attribute the decline to the following.

Travel ball has marketed their product well and have parents believing they are the only way to a college career. In fact, travel ball pits you against players your age and legion ball forces young players to compete with older players - just like in college.

Travel associations rank their players and the parents believe these rankings.

Travel ball players know they are going to get a lot of playing time as long as mom and dad come up with the funds. Players are not guaranteed to make the legion team and play time is definitely not guaranteed.

If you can play baseball, colleges will find you. Save your money folks and play legion baseball- for those that can make the team.

Lastly, it does not appear the legion posts are funding the programs like they did back in the day.

On a side note, players are playing year round and arm surgeries are unbelievably high even with the restrictive pitch counts. In the 1980s, baseball was not year round and pitchers started and finished 9 inning games. Sure there were injuries but not at the rate of todays players. Let your son play multiple sports.

That should about complete my rant for today.

I am not on Facebook but I read a post today on United Baseball Parents of America that is worth the read. Interesting take on travel ball.

Cherryville versus Union County last night 7-5-24, Cherryville wins 8-2...Game 4 this evening at Marvin Ridge.
C'ville leads series 2-1.

Growing up, you had to be a stud to play travel ball. Now it has grown into a glorified rec league. However, if you have seen any of the rec leagues around here lately, you have to play travel ball to get better. The rec leagues are poorly ran and have no talent in them. If your son/daughter plays rec league only, there is no way they will improve. It's sad. Legion ball was what every kid wanted to play in the late 90s and early 2000s. I played college baseball for 4 years but legion ball was by far my favorite years of baseball. I wish it was still popular. Legion officials should do a lot more than they are doing to keep it relevant. But they are making it harder to field teams with all of the rules/regulations. 10 years from now and NC will probably have only 10 teams.

Davidson Co won over Rowan 9-6. They lead series 2-1. They will go to game 4 at Holt Moffitt field Sunday at 7pm.

Just a couple of thoughts on the decline of American Legion Baseball and how to improve it:

1. League commisoners and state directors need to actively go out to the local posts and recruit teams to come back that used to have a team. A lot will not do that because they are not paid. Doing this would be a part time job.

2. With national going to 7,500 enrollment in result has folded a lot of smaller legion teams. They can not compete against their larger teams. Teams that are in the biggest cities with no other teams around them should compete yearly for championships.

3. Junior Legion Baseball and Younger: Senior Legion baseball is supposed to be mainly kids back from college, graduating seniors and any really really good underclassman. Junior Legion baseball is really meant for all the other kids within high school. But wait a second what about kids in middle school? Like Bleed Blue said..... rec programs have gone to trash because kids are playing travel baseball. I believe some travel ball teams are starting at 3rd grade. We need to create middle school junior legion teams to compete with this travel ball. The earlier these teams get into legion the successful we will be.

In today's world there is too much time spent by kids in the air conditioning with their iphones, computers, and xboxes.

You have spoken a tremendous amount of truth in this post. From rec ball to legion.

Game 4 of Cherryville versus Union County was postponed Saturday night due to rain. Then rescheduled for today (Sunday) at 3 P.M.
Didn’t have an official score but the C’ville Post 100 Facebook page is reporting that Union County won 11-8. If this is correct, the final game will be played Monday night in Cherryville.

The Gaston Braves and Asheville are tied two games each, with the final game scheduled for 7 PM, tonight in Belmont.
Lots of rain in this area, today, so it might get rained out.

Shelby is waiting on the winner of Gaston v. Asheville starting in Shelby on Tuesday (I believe).

Rutherford eliminated Gastonia and is waiting on the winner of Cherryville V. Union.

High Point awaits the winner of the Davidson County vs. Rowan County series to play for the Area III title. Davidson County is up two games to one on Rowan County. Area III only gets one representative in the state tournament this year, so the winner of the High Point series garners all the marbles.

That's unfortunate too. Area III always fields strong teams.

I’m not at the Rowan game but seen they got off to late start due to rain. 8pm start. Last I seen they were in the 1st. No score yet that I seen.

Rowan finish the season 16-13. Apparently a down year. Last year they had 40 wins with a really great season. Next year we will see what Rowan will bring back. Best of luck to all the teams left playing. I will keep an eye on how the tournament will finish out.
