I am a little biased here so apologies ahead of time, Ledford obviously has an extremely strong defense this year led by #3 Little (LB) and #34 Wetherington (LB). #3 Little, a Senior, was the CCC Defensive Player of the Year last year. #34 Wetherington, a Senior, leads the team in tackles and is the Defensive Captain. #22 Turner, a Senior, has had a strong year at Defensive End and leads the team in Sacks. #50 Shiver (Defensive Line), a Junior, is a large man on the line and hard to run at or block. #91 Dudley, a Senior, (Defensive Line) is the other player on the line who leads the team in Tackles For Loss.
Biased observation comes in here, #23 Reich has had little action this year as it relates to passes his way. This can be illustrated by the fact that the DB on the opposite side of him, #4 Martin is tied for the most INTs in the state of NC (2A) with 10 Interceptions. #23 Reich has not allowed a touchdown thrown to any receiver he has been asked to play head up on. #23 Reich is used in multiple ways as he plays Offense, Defense, Punt Return, and Kick Off return, which most on this board already know. Ledford as a Defense have only allowed 57 points this year (Average of 5 points a game) but the weak conference has not helped. Consequently, North has allowed less points this year and has scored more points than Ledford. Ledford has allowed 4 Receiving TD's, 3 Rushing TD's, and 3 FG's on the Season (6 points by Extra Points).
It is not a secret that Ledford is anchored by its Defensive Line and Linebackers so running the ball can be difficult, also allowing time for a QB to set up and throw can be difficult. If teams choose to pass on Ledford then they have to pick their poison. Throw to the side of #4 Martin who is tied for the most INTs in the state (2A) or throw toward #23 Reich who has 3 INTs.
Ledford's only loss this year is to Randleman by 6 points, who as of last week was ranked as the #4 team in 2A based on the NCHSAA Adjusted MaxPreps Rankings. Randleman ended the regular season undefeated and is projected to be a #2 seed. Usually the Adjusted MaxPrep Rankings is updated on Monday afternoon however since there are some games being played Monday night the updated rankings have not came out yet. Ledford has helped their case with the win over North and their only loss is to an undefeated Randleman team who is #4 in the state. I believe Ledford will get a #3 seed and North will grab a #5 or #6 seed.
ALL criticisms are valid and points can be made for or against specific players, coaches and teams. At the end of the day, it is high school football. Referees are less than desirable, Coaches put in long hours and do not get paid enough, and Skilled Players are the wildcard for winning teams.
North and Ledford will both be fine in the 2AA state playoffs. They are Senior heavy and both have extremely tough defenses. Their offenses are running more efficient, in my opinion, as we enter the playoffs. North has an advantage over the field because they have been there before as it relates to last year's run. Ledford has some advantages too as several of their skilled players are 4 year Varsity starters who have been to the 3rd round of the playoffs once during their 4 years. Both teams will represent the Central Carolina Conference well.
Also the future looks bright for Ledford still. Ledford Middle School team finished second in the league at 7-1, Ledford's JV team went undefeated this year at 9-0, and obviously the Varsity went undefeated in Conference play and finished the regular season at 10-1.
