Good luck to Coach David. He is going to need it and then some. At this point, HPC football is an embarrassment and 100% not competitive. Saying this is a monumental rebuilding job is an understatement. Let's hope the community and players buy into what Coach David is selling. HPC needs a head coach who can engage with the youth programs and feeder middle schools, ensuring everyone is on the same page. They also need mentorship programs to help keep players focused off the field in order to make a real turnaround. As you mentioned, they’ll need the coach to stay long enough to see those changes through. High Point has always had talent and athletes; now it’s about harnessing that potential. It’s sad, the year before last they didn’t even have summer workouts for years and they can barely field a varsity team. It’ll begin and end with the adults in the community to change things around.
Yes, continuity with the coaching staff is one of the keys. A change in coaching staff every few years already puts a HS football program behind the 8 ball. Since Coach David was just hired, I wonder if the players were doing any sort of off season work while the HC spot was vacant? If not, the team already has a lot of catching up to do for the 2025 season. Does Guilford Co. have middle school football? If so, I wonder how successful the programs are that feed into HPC? As you said, it helps a lot if the HS coach has relationships with the middle school coaches so players at the MS level can be groomed and prepared for HS football.
Man, it’s a shame to watch all that talent just sittin there, specially with the dope history and skills that came from this program. We definitely gotta put in some serious work to rebuild it, and that means the coaches and the whole block gotta step up. Lookin at HPC’s past issues, like not havin summer workouts and the struggle to get a varsity squad together, it’s obvious that we all need to come together to flip the script on this program.
