Hey Shelby Lion and Shelbyfan

an offer from Alabama and Clemson is the very best you can get sir, what is your angle? Or would he need a usc or Oregon offer lol?
I agree.I don't believe anybody from Cleveland County has ever got as been big time offers as Dax did. Also as I posted earlier no QB from Cleveland County has ever played QB at a D 1 school that I can recall.

I'd love to see my WCU Catamounts come in and pick up some of these guys that are falling through the cracks. We aint really had a decent team in years and can use all the talent available.

Justin Foster got big time offers, too. I imagine Shamar Finney and Brandon Spikes did as well. I just looked up Foster’s recruitment, he was big time for sure.

Just my opinion... has to do with multiple factors. Did he attend any camps over the summer? is he D1 size? 1 inch really matters to the recruiters. Gaffney has a young man who isnt even a starter and got offered by Syracuse cause of his size and potential. These coaches come by and talk with kids and meet them but I wouldnt necessarily say they "build them up" they come and talk with one kid and a HS coach may say come and meet so n so as well while you are here. Most of your D1 QBs are coming from very historic and nationally exposed programs, some smaller schools like CC have kids that catch attention and end up in the ACC or even the SEC but its few and far between. Our county definitely puts kids in college but its more schools like App, WCU etc.

Maybe that’s why App state is the best football team in the state ;)

Finney could've went anywhere in the country. Penn St. was LB U when he committed there. Grades have killed a large % of county players from going anywhere.....you were talking about QB's, Norris Hopper was the best QB to ever come through Cleveland County, but chose baseball mainly because of grades and $.

We were talking about in this air raid offense that we are now running. It would have been interesting seeing Norris in the Spread, though. However, I was always of the opinion that Batmite was the best quarterback to ever come through Shelby High, and Norris was the best Athlete, however, Norris could most definitely spin it, but he threw so little back in those Wishbone and Wing T days. I definitely don’t argue with anyone who says he’s the best qb, though. Amazing athlete!

If Hopper would've came through in today's time with the RPO and spread field it wouldn't be fair lol.

Just the thoughts of Norris Hopper running a zone read out of the shotgun makes me smile.. ha ha ha ha

Bat Mite was a leader bottom line... He could will his team to win.... Just think about the title game against Southern Vance in 2006 knocked out of the game (literally out ) in the first half .... That leader/warrior mentality wasnt going to allow himself to stay out, valiant return to lead his team to victory in the second half
When we needed a throw he made them, consistently ...

Norris Hopper is the best athlete Ive seen play QB at Shelby..... Chad Holbrook is the best option QB ive seen at Shelby... He could make pitches that you would think "How in gods name did he do that" Read that triple option to perfection

Last year my Grandson showed me a picture of a 8th grader that was 6'6 and 295 lbs from Georgia. He was standing next to Nick Sabin of Alabama who already has a commitment from him. Can you believe a 8th grader that big. I can't remember his name, but can you believe how big he will be when he is a senior. wow.

Reidsville had a couple guys that way. Gown men in 8th grade. Ernest Blackwell and Kethian Marshall lol beast.

Dont seem in last 10 years we have had any players like that except for Keyron Johnson. Who's at chapel hill playing now.

I forgot
Im familiar with Blackwell, but who is Marshall?

I haven’t heard about Marshall in a long tiMe he wore number 99. I really can’t remember how good he was or what team he played for. But he was big, if I had to guess I’d say 2001-2002 team

Definitely wasnt on those early 2000s teams, Im guessing the 08-11 range when I was not in the area.

No wasn’t on those teams either. I actually think he was 2004. He wasn’t on those teams, because that’s when I was in school in 2008-09. He’s definitely early 2000’s

Maxpreps usually lists the old rosters, but not at this time for some odd reason.

Yea Marshall was like 03-06. But truly a beast athlete. Just off the field issues kept him from being bigtime in my opinion. He came to my house alot during the 04 season as I was a freshman. Really cool guy.

I'm a little late on this but Keith Brooks was an absolutely amazing QB for shelby high. Put him in the new shelby system and his stats are amazing.

Batmite was the first QB to put up real passing yards, unbelievable with the offense he ran.

Norris Hopper is the BEST qb to ever come through shelby. No brianer! That dude was vick before vick!

I think it’s the system that’s hurts the recruitment. Had a conversation with another former qb there, and told him then, that in my opinion, recruiters apparently look at the quarterbacks as products of Shelby’s system. On this run of state titles, you have 4 different quarterbacks who all were state champions and put up big numbers. Darquez Lee threw for 4,500 yards. That production elsewhere would normally put you on everyone’s radar.

Yet, you see quarterbacks in Charlotte who throw for a lot less yardage, yet, get much greater interest. I guess college recruiters look at the competition, too. Bess has the prototypical size, at a legit 6’4”, but I think Shelby’s system, in addition to being 2A, and going up against 2A competition has actually hurt him, recruiting wise. He does have offers from Charleston Southern, Campbell, and Gardner Webb currently, though.
Great post and I agree ......a hs coach once told me q b is one of the harder positions to go big time D1 in because "everybody has a good quarterback." Look no further than the all time record setter in cc - Brandon littlejohn.....the best he got was Western.

Facts!!!! And often times, you won’t see no more than two quarterbacks in a given recruiting class, but multiple recruits in the other positions.

And, speaking of Littlejohn who was an all time great quarterback in the County, I think he was converted to receiver in his brief time at WCU.

Yep and that was the plan all along. The biggest things for kids these days is just taking advantage of the best offers of where they think they will fit best. Getting their education paid for and taking advantage of every opportunity they have. It’s not about how big you can go, it’s about where you go and what you can do when you get there. I think most kids get lost in that these days.

In 2A you have to just about totally dominate the competition to get the power 5 schools attention. For example, Hollifield was a game changing dominant LB at Shelby, and if I recall not many outside of regional ACC teams really wanted him. Now, if he played at Mallard Creek, or even Crest,I think the national attention would have been greater.

Just my 2 cents that might be worth 4 due to inflation. Bess will end up somewhere nice. ECU have an interest?

He was a 4 star and National Recruit. It doesnt get any bigger than being offered by Clemson or Bama.

QB is just different. Far fewer actual spots. He reminds a bit of the Hooker kid at Va Tech.

And how many of those are outside of the ACC region? Depending on your opinion of Maryland, I count 4, which is not many.

Try harder.
Why don't you try harder, if you actually bothered to count there are 7 on that list outside the ACC, Frank has now last his ability to count or he might have used this new common core math, moron

Crest record is Willie Green 5598 yds 2014-15..next Jordan Robinson 4654 2003-2006...Brandon Boone 3727 2000 - 2001.....Willie single season 2015 3467 yds...Single game ..452 in 2015
