just wondering if any Erwin folks went tonight, and if so what their impressions of both teams were

I think Erwin has a ways to go. Offensively, we looked much like we did Tuesday at Shelby. We could move the ball to the 10, but could not execute and put it in the end zone. Passing wise the QB was as off as I have seen in a while. Credit Murphy though for their defensive scheme and reaction to the ball. I thought they did a great job getting to the ball and not giving up big plays. I know Erwin had their stud linebacker sit this one out, but our first team D did a great job. Tuesday we had quite few guys playing both ways, but tonight we seemed to be plugging in a lot of guys on defense to gain some experience and see how they can help out moving forward.
I think Murphy will live up to their expectations this year and it appears they have good numbers that can contribute, which in the SMC is a big plus. With Erwin's schedule and what I have seen so far, a .500 season, or somewhere close to it, may be where we are at. Im afraid next week will be a major uphill battle against Mt. Paran Christian. Best of luck to Murphy and hope you guys stay healthy and make a deep run this fall.

Thanks for the info MACFan1, good luck to Erwin this season too. Defense is usually ahead of offense at this point, so I'm sure you guys will be fine.

I'm pleasantly surprised that Murphy performed that well given their overall youth, that's a great sign moving forward. This is supposed to be Murphy's slowest team in about 7 or 8 years, so it's good to hear that they were able to limit big plays defensively. It does sound like Murphy isn't going to be as explosive offensively this season, but I anticipated that with the speed they lost at the skill spots. I heard our sophomores (who are a really talented group) looked the part though, which I expected.

P.S. Did any individual players stand out for Murphy, or for that matter Erwin?

The main tailback #34 was solid. Other than that, I can't say that any one player stood out. Overall team speed seemed good and you will need all you can get next week with Hendo. From what I hear they are better than last year and have several guys that can fly. I know they hammered TC Tuesday and as expected easily handled Brevard. Their QB is the real deal and can run and throw it.

#34 is a sophomore, he's going to be a really good one if he puts in the work.

Yes, Hendo will be a tough task. They always have plenty of skill speed, so nothing new on that front. I wouldn't be surprised if they beat Murphy next week but playing at home helps. As long as we come out of healthy and have a good showing I can't complain.

What's the story on the Mt. Parah Christian squad Erwin is playing?

They are Class 1A Private in Georgia and went undefeated last year winning the State Championship 49 - 7. Appears to be a pretty nice school and on film resemble a Charlotte Catholic with some seriously fast skill players. Very big and physical up front and their defense is nasty. Looking at video they either play really inferior competition, or they may just be that good. They also have a pretty high MaxPrep rank especially compared to most NC high schools. They have only been around for like 6 or 7 years, but are ranked 33 overall in the state of Georgia. So they have built/recruited a heck of a team. So you look at them along with Science Hill overall ranked #20 in TN and Ooltewah TN at #32 and that makes for 3 games that will be beyond tough. Franklin and Mtn. Heritage are no pushovers either. I seriously doubt any one in WNC (mountains that is) has a tougher schedule. I know the out of state schools may not be familiar to folks around here, but they all have D1 recruits on their roster.

I went yesterday and I'm not really sure what to make of it. Erwin looked out of sync on offense, but they didn't seem to be running the offense they usually do. They have one of the best receivers in the mtns Chase Austin, and they threw to him one time. The qb was off a little too. I will say that I was impressed with the defense. Other than one broken play they were sold all night. You know Erwin is going to put points on the board this year , so if the defense is solid they will be good. Their schedule is ridiculous so they better be good. I didn't see Kendall Dover play last night. The kid has so much potential but has been dealing with injuries every season. Anyone know what happened to him? Murphy looked solid and with the exception of Hendersonville they will not play another team with team speed like Erwin. They should be in the fight for a SMC title.

From eye witness accounts Im able to piece together , Murphy went on the road and shut out/skunked what is supposedly one of the faster teams in the area in Erwin . Sounds like the defense is tuned up well for this early. Murphy''s offense only scored once so still some concerns and work to do in that dept. Hard to tell if the other team is any good sometimes in a scrimmage but so far , so good it sounds like for my Murphy Bulldogs.
