Charlotte Kickoff Classic

I parked at the deck near UNC Charlotte and rode the Lynx into uptown and then the streetcar to the CPCC stop. It was 3/10ths of a mile walk from there. It took just less than an hour. I figure that it was still easier than getting out of the hell hole parking situation at the stadium.

I got there right at 8. Ridiculous to have everyone enter at the same gate. It took 20 minutes to buy my ticket and get through security. Hate the idea of blocking off seats.

Clearing the stadium for the storm was the right call. I didn’t know that they’d have to cancel the game, but I headed home the second they announced the mandatory evacuation of the stadium. I was not going to stand in line as they put thousands of people back through 3 poorly run security lines.

That was my first trip to that stadium. I love the idea of the old historic venue, but I don’t have to do it again. I’d support any other site that would like to try something similar.

Play the games at UNC Charlotte in the future, this year UNC Charlotte is hosting multiple games (including the mallard creek Vance game I think)

I understand why Mallard Creek Declined, those two games in one week would be hard on any team. However, would have loved to see these two teams play.

Coach P is right to decline Monday with Butler Friday.

The event was poorly ran. Sorry. Hate to slag people I know are trying to give us something special but every single person I have communicated with tonight understood the weather issue but we’re disappointed with all other logistics.

In my opinion the upper bleachers may have been partitioned due to safety concerns. There were two inch separations between some of the concrete joints. Parking deck is also closed due to safety issues that are being reviewed by engineers.

Btango is Elizabeth Traditional/independence park not available for parking? Also is memorial now assigned seats?

Not as much parking as in previous years. The offices on Seventh were not manned and all empty on Saturday but a lot of the tow signs around. Complete FUBAR.

Could this by chance scheduling save this game???

Appears Butler and MC have the same bye week. They could reschedule their game allowing DF and MC to play on Monday. DF would play Spring Valley next Friday as scheduled.

MC and Butler would be open moving their game back one week to August 31st which was both teams initial open date.

Not even sure they can pull it off now as the horse is out of the barn but would be brilliant.

As it stands now Butler gets MC who will not have had a game one then an open week before Richmond. If I am Hales I would want something nice for my program to change that.

Maybe the games should have been played earlier in the day, to leave enough time for possible obstacles. It seems like playing double headers in Football on a Saturday needs a bigger window of postponement time.

Even when games start at 7, sometimes they run pretty late. I know the Page/Davie game this past Friday ended around 10:30pm and have had many games in the past go close to 11pm or just past it. Say MC/DF did start at 8pm and you have some injury stoppage time, both teams exhaust all timeouts and the game goes to double OT, the game could have easily gotten to the 11:59pm halt anyways.

Glad I didn't waste my time going to this sounds like everything was a nightmare. If they do this again pick somewhere else. So many better places to have an event like this. Creek and DF should have played the NCHSAA could have waved the midnight rule for 1 game to give the people what they want and paid for.

The game has been rescheduled to S2Vs back yard tonight at 8pm. Beware of dog doo doo if you go and parking and the host will be a nightmare.:)

If it were at UNC C parking would be simple. I’d park three or four stops away and ride the train in. Quick walk and you’d be there. Plus, they’d have a better strategy for entering the stadium (multiple gates)

For high school football games they use the closest on campus parking deck and let everyone use it for a few bucks it’s like a 200/300 foot walk to the stadium

There is a rule in place that forbids Sunday play which I find very antiquated.

Back to the Sunday rule and the NCHSAA. It has not kept them from changing games to Sunday in the past to accomodate them. 1989 the predivided four classification state title games are "iced" out in Chapel Hill. Teams are put up an extra night in hotels and play Sunday instead of Saturday. Believe the Friday games went off as planned. 2003 the 1A games scheduled for Duke are rescheduled to Sunday after Duke determines having the title games concurrently with the St John's hoops game would cause entry and exiting issues of the parking facility plus cramped parking for their Iron Dukes donors. In 2008 UNC has a home basketball game (Oral Roberts) scheduled along graduation ceremonies that weekend. The 4A game is played at noon. Richmond and Jack Britt square off Sunday evening.

I understand why those games were rescheduled and allowed to be played on Sunday. I do not understand how a game of special circumstances such as the game last night could not be allowed to be played?!!? That is where a great leader makes the call and gives the green light. I do not want to hear about Sunday being scared. It is not when it fits the agenda. I do not want to hear about safety. What is the difference between the game ending at 11:59 and 12:59am? There were some seasoned admininstrators there that felt the game should have been played.

I am sure the teams received their payouts but the fans did not get what they came for and it could have easily happened for the ones willing to stay!

Nothing about the decision was made in the best interest of the kids, coaches or families and fans. You cant tell me that 12:45 ending time is a safety concern but its OK to play make up games on a Monday and then bring 16-17 year olds back on Friday to play. Take a good look at those kids warming up out there last night. Big, fast and physical programs.

You cannot tell me that you did not feel the change in the "atmosphere" as soon as MC and DF took the field?!? We were ready to watch two goliaths go at it.

Did fans get refunds?

No. I personally think that is why the announcement the game "will not be played tonight" was made when everyone involved knew it was not going to be played. That is not on the schools but the promoter which handles those aspects of the game.

DF at least physically is as impressive as I have seen. MC always passes the eye test. I am convinced it would have been epic.

I’m a Butler guy sitting with other Butler guys and we were anticipating DF/MC game. We had a legit conversation about the running clock so we can get those two on the field. I do agree the atmosphere was electric for those two programs.

I don’t know the lay of the land near that stadium. But I know getting 3000 cars out of a parking deck takes forever. That’s just me though. I’m a mass transit junkie, so I enjoy riding the train. Not everyone’s cup of tea.

@btango i totally agree. If I would have had hair on the back of my bald head it would have stood up...just electric. @Blue and Gold22 you are also correct the first game looked like a good size HS football team (Butler) and a below average size HS football team (Scotland). Mallard Creek & Dutch Fork both looked like kids that could play on Saturday probably 1-30 on both sides. I think it would have been an instant classic.

I don’t foresee anyone getting a refund, even though it is warranted. I got there at 8:15 to see game 2. I saw half of the 4th quarter of game 1.

Not exactly ten dollars worth of football. But, it is what it is.

There’s other areas to park, I went to a hs game last fall and used the parking deck but you can also light rail in from the public parking decks. I’m not sure on the system they have but they would be a great host and make it work a lot more coordinated then what it seems it was yesterday
