I think Catholic has some competition on the west side. Ashbrook, Dudley (depending on how they do east and west, and Kings Mountain could be some show stoppers. They will the run the show for the next few years at the 6A level. They should move Catholic and Gibbons to 7A.
"whereas the public schools CAN’T recruit by rule." Yes, but I am sure that "rule" gets skirted all the time. Here in Forsyth Co. there is open enrollment. So a kid that is a talented football player and lives in the Carver or Parkland (both with bad football teams) district can brush them off and go to East Forsyth, Tabor or West Forsyth. That is not breaking any rules due to the open enrollment policy, but I don't like it. And obviously, can lead to some recruiting by the schools with better football teams. But I agree with you that Gibbons or CC should not be in the NCHSAA. I don't like charter schools being in the NCHSAA, either, even with them getting public funding. They can also flat out recruit players and get good very fast - see Corvian Community. They should be moved to 8A. Better yet, the NCHSAA should kick out the private schools. The private school parents CHOOSE to spend big money so their kids DON’T HAVE TO GO to public schools yet they damn sure want their privileged kids to get to play the public schools in athletics. After all, their kids should have the best of everything. Go check out the facility discrepancies between the public and private schools. The coaching supplements. The trainers, orthopedic doctors, and strength coaches. Their buses. Their uniforms. Their lack of diversity as their teams pose with state championship trophy after trophy. I could go on and on. It is a total mismatch. A total uneven playing field that allows wealthy parents to buy championships. Yet, for a token fee, the NCHSAA allows this to happen. By the way, this is not a shot at the NCHSAA staff but rather the public school members of the NCHSAA who can vote to end this craziness.
Oh, and the private schools MUST recruit to get student athletes who would have otherwise gone to a public school whereas the public schools CAN’T recruit by rule. Again, one must recruit and one can’t recruit yet they compete for championships against each other. How in the hell does that make sense?
CG and CC will completely own 6A in most, if not all, sports.
When is the last time catholic and gibbons won state titles and it's not like they are playing for titles every year
They just won the mens wrestling dual championship. When is the last time catholic and gibbons won state titles and it's not like they are playing for titles every year
Also, I wonder if schools like CG and CC have scholarships of some sort? I don't know the tuition for these schools but I am sure it is hefty. If they offer scholarships to lower income kids that is another unfair advantage. I am all for giving lower income kids a chance like that. But if they give a scholarship to a star football player and pluck them away from the public school, that is wrong and another reason why they should not be in the NCHSAA. That is fine if they want to do that and they are in private school only conferences. But they should not be playing public schools if they can do what I described above.Seriously?
Cardinal Gibbons won one last week in womens indoor track and field. They won one in swimming the week before last. They have won 21 state titles over the past 4.5 seasons, 43 over the last 10.5 years and 93 over the past 24.5 years if my quick research is correct. I may be on the low side. This does not count the MANY times CG has been state runner-up. Granted CG has won just 1 in football.
As for football, Charlotte Catholic has won 7 state titles in the last 20 years and was runner-up 4 times. That is pretty dominant. Their website does not post state championships but they have won a ton. My rough count of the NCHSAA website has CC with 51 state championships over the past 24.5 years across most sports. Again, this does not count the many times CC was a state runner-up.
This is way bigger than just football. As I posted above, CG and CC are about to completely obliterate 6A. Total domination. They would do the same in 7A. They have a combined +/- 144 state championships in the past 24.5 years. ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY FOUR. Let that sink in - and our private school friends on here would have us believe they have no advantages.
I suspect one of the two will win at least 80% of all 6A sports state championships over the next 4 years. If you are a 6A player, parent, coach or administrator think about what you are getting ready to endure - watching private schools who want NOTHING to do with public schools (except to play them in athletics) hold a bunch of state championship trophies.
Again, the time has come for the NCHSAA member institutions to put an end to this insanity.
From what i hear. It cost 12 thousands a year to go to Catholic. Their not suppose to give out Scholarships. I have heard stories that some families can no longer afford to send their kids to Catholic and have to leave the program. I still believe that the Catholic Schools have an unfair advantage in their programs. Charlotte the big city in NC. For athletes it 25 mile radius from the School. Most of the students range from Davidson, NC to Rock Hill and Fort Mill SC. The only way to remove the private Schools. It will have to take just about every Public School in the State to vote the private Schools out. Not all the Schools will vote. If i was the Commissioner i wouldn't remove them, but i would make them move up a classification. For example Charlotte Catholic had small 3A numbers and they moved up to 4A from 2021-24. I was all good with that. It was a good fit for Catholic. Now both programs are 6A, they should move them up to 7A. Chances are the Catholic Schools could face each other in December for 6A State Championship. Then you will have a lot of people questioning that saying I Told You So.Also, I wonder if schools like CG and CC have scholarships of some sort? And yes, both CC and CG are both very strong in football most every year, as you stated in your post. They don't win state titles every year. But they are most always in the playoffs and making deep runs once they get there.
Charlotte Catholic will have a more competitive route to the state championship in the West. The 6A west will be treacherous. Catholic will definitely be in the hunt annually as they usually are. Cardinal Gibbons playing 6A is more problematic in my opinion. CG went to the 4A football state championship game three times in a row between 2019-2021 and were in the eastern 4A finals last season. CG playing 6A against what were mostly 3A schools prior to realignment is a huge oversight mistake by the member schools. CG draws elite players from all around the Raleigh area. Combine that with the resources they have will be a lot to deal with on the 6A level. Fans in Raleigh have been complaining about CG for years and now the rest of the state is about to see why. From what i hear. It cost 12 thousands a year to go to Catholic. If the elite players CG is drawing in are paying the full tuition, fine. If they are getting any financial assistance at all, that is 100% wrong and is just flat out recruiting players like a college. There are ways to knock tuition way down for students for private and parochial schools. Grants, tuition assistance, scholarships are just a couple of the ways that private schools knock down the tuition costs for “students in need” who happen to be good athletes. Do these schools offer “athletic” scholarships? The answer to that is no but do these schools make sure that “students” athletes they bring in are awarded enough money to pay much or all of their tuition? The answer to that is yes. A scholarship is a scholarship whether it’s academic or athletic, it serves the same purpose but allow these schools to say that they do not award athletic scholarship money. If the elite players CG is drawing in are paying the full tuition, fine. If they are getting any financial assistance at all, that is 100% wrong and is just flat out recruiting players like a college. In that case, CG should be in an all private school conference and not in the NCHSAA.
you lost me at "lack of diversity". wtf does that have to do with anything. They should be moved to 8A. Better yet, the NCHSAA should kick out the private schools. Both schools offers tuition assistance, grants, scholarships, and other funds to assist students with paying tuition costs. It doesn’t need to be an athletic award to benefit athletic programs.Catholic does not give out any scholarships of any kind to athletes. That's been a rule since the 70s. Cannot speak to Gibbons.
Athletes do not receive those. Only type of discount would be the practicing Catholic discount which is approved by their parish priest and not the school. You must attend mass weekly, in person to attain it. Something like 48 out of 52 weeks plus any holy days of obligation. Not everyone gets it.Both schools offers tuition assistance, grants, scholarships, and other funds to assist students with paying tuition costs. It doesn’t need to be an athletic award to benefit athletic programs.
Ain't no doubt, the gap between them public and private schools in sports be real crazy. Private schools got them resources to snatch up them athletes, while public schools gotta stick to them strict no-recruit rules. This messes up the game and got folks wonderin bout the fairness of high school sports. They should be moved to 8A. Better yet, the NCHSAA should kick out the private schools. Strict no-recruit rules? Do those not apply to Weddington and Grimsley? LolAin't no doubt, the gap between them public and private schools in sports be real crazy.
