Lincolnton, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Tommy’s closed for good. Soon to be a Mexican restaurant. Believe me, I would have named it too.Tommy's in Thomasville. Don't know what it is but Davidson County barbecue is just different...Not sure if this is correct, I heard that barbecue fame in the Lexington Thomasville area got its start from a Mr. Stamey who married into the Bridges family in Shelby, then later left that area and migrated northeast along what is now I-85, and settled in Greensboro...Have to say, Bridges in Shelby (both of them) and BBQ King Lincolnton are good, too.
You may want to try the Lexington BBQ Festival in late October. Between 100,000 and 200,000 visitors annually on one Saturday. Food, crafts and usually some pretty good music. In WNC, I'd say Haywood Smokehouse (Dillsboro), Buxton Hall BBQ (Asheville), and 12 Bones (Asheville). Also been to both places mentioned in Shelby, my personal opinion was Alston Bridges BBQ one was freakin' amazin' and some of the best I've ever had. I know I'm in the minority on this, but I thought Red Bridges BBQ was absolutely awful and some of the worst I've ever had.
Side note... When I was a little kid (late 90's) I remember going to some kind of big BBQ tournament/Craft festival in Tryon with my parents. Does anybody know if that's still a thing?
OC, I think one of the Davidson County posters said something about Tommy's closing. I do hate that.Lincolnton, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Tommy’s closed for good. Soon to be a Mexican restaurant. Believe me, I would have named it too.
So, I googled it and I have no earthly idea how I've never heard or been to this before? Only 2 and 1/2 hours from my house. I'll def have to check it out this year though. It was always a tough choice between a chopped special and a Cushwa dog. Of course, you could do both.OC, I think one of the Davidson County posters said something about Tommy's closing. I do hate that.
I wonder just how many times the Thomasville faithful have discussed football over a meal, there, on a chilly fall evening, before heading over to Cushwa for a Bulldogs game.
Check out their website or Facebook page before you go. Parking is a bear and not cheap. I’d recommend the free shuttle. Even cooler is taking Amtrak directly to it. But that’s not doable for everybody. So, I googled it and I have no earthly idea how I've never heard or been to this before? Only 2 and 1/2 hours from my house. It is a good time, multiple stages with all genres of music playing. So, I googled it and I have no earthly idea how I've never heard or been to this before? Only 2 and 1/2 hours from my house. I'll def have to check it out this year though. Thanks!
Sounds like the good old days. I have ate at Boss Hog BBQ and yep some good eating. If I in the area of Connelly Springs I will have try out JDs Smokehouse.I'm a big fan of JDs Smokehouse in Connelly Springs. Their Jalapeño Cheddar Cheese Grits are out of this world.
Big Daddy K's in Denver has excellent corn muffins and burnt ends.
Boss Hog BBQ in Sherrills Ford is my nostalgia pick. Mama worked there growing up when i was in elementary school and mawmaw drove bus, would drop us off there after school. I got to meet Ricky Steamboat and Rosco P Coltrane while studying my multiplication tables and figuring out how I was going to get my older sister's best friend to kiss me.
Man oh man how did I forget JD’s. You sir are correct on the grits. They are worth the trip alone.I'm a big fan of JDs Smokehouse in Connelly Springs. Their Jalapeño Cheddar Cheese Grits are out of this world.

I've always had a sentimental spot for East Duplin because of their town's name, Beulaville. That was my Mother's name, course, it was Beulah, not Beulaville. Go Panthers !Sids in Beulaville
You find a church that does BBQ right, hit that sucker every year. Sulphur Springs in Shelby has been having there's every Oct for like 45 years. Outstanding Q and they make their own hushpuppies.I know there is a church down the rd that serve barbecue twice a year. One in March and the other in October. Next Saturday they will be having it. Using hickory wood and putting it in tinfoil. That barbecue is delicious. Of course this in Rowan Co.
I tell you what, we do a pretty good one every year for American Legion Baseball. You find a church that does BBQ right, hit that sucker every year. Sulphur Springs in Shelby has been having there's every Oct for like 45 years. Outstanding Q and they make their own hushpuppies.
I always knew you came from good stock Lincolnton, my mothers name was Beulah also.I've always had a sentimental spot for East Duplin because of their town's name, Beulaville. That was my Mother's name, course, it was Beulah, not Beulaville. Go Panthers !
Also, BBQ King in Lincolnton! I'm not crazy about RO's BBQ in Gastonia, but I love their BBQ Slaw.I like both Hillbillies and Kyle Fletcher's in Lowell.

I was close! You’re lucky he got even that close to getting right. 😂😂😂
I'm gonna have to get up that way and meet you for some BBQ one Saturday. Im working on losing a few pounds so I don't eat as much but already I can tell a difference. I got on the scales a few weeks back and was a little over 200 and it just pissed me off. At 5'-8" I should not be near that. I've lost 15 lbs so far. I noticed today taking a shower I looked down and saw something I hadn't seen in a while unless I was in front of a mirror!! 🤣🤣🤣close otis....but it's SHORT SUGAR'S (Reidsville)...not Sweet Sugar's...
I didn't even know they were playing today. I need to download a schedule.lol...I weigh 218.....when I graduated high school...I weighed about 155....when I got married in 1976 I weighed about 180....been down hill ever since...but hey I'll be 72 in July so I ain't complaing too much....would like to see you...I'm following West Craven vs. Croatan in baseball on gamechanger right now...WC is up 11-8 going into bottom of 7th....looks like the Cougars are gonna take their first loss after starting season at 3-0........................my grandson is starting CF for Croatan............
I agree 100% on the Red bridges bbq being terrible.... the Flying pig (in front of Shelby airport) is a lot better. I think Red’s has just been around so long that it’s became a staple and easy to pull into.In WNC, I'd say Haywood Smokehouse (Dillsboro), Buxton Hall BBQ (Asheville), 12 Bones (Asheville).
