Best 2A teams you ever seen play, not counting your team

Greenville

I'm not sure that any team in the country could beat the Green Devil's last year. IMO

They won two games by less than a TD and one of those opponents lost five games but they were mostly dominant in their classification in Tennessee.

You would have to see them play to understand their level of sheer dominance in every element of the game. Those stats your looking at I guarantee you are misleading as to how incredible they were. I suspect, because of their tremendous depth, those numbers happened as a result of a third or fourth string freshman/sophomore squad being given some playing time.

Do not expect a coach plays many third and fourth stringers in a state quarterfinal four point win or a 20-17 regular season opener. Many in Tennessee note that game against 5A Boone when debating the best team in the state (1A-6A). No doubt GC (4A) was a strong squad and is an established program but questioning if any team in the nation would beat them is a stretch.

Clinton teams of 97 or 98 and also Reidsville 04 or 05 I forget...talking 2a only...1 of the best teams I ever seen was 87 Garner...They beat my Vance Vikings 21-17 in a game that 2 this day is 1 of the best football games I have ever seen.....

Well it seems that the caveat about not mentioning your own team has gone by the boards...lol.....so I'll say about the Rams of Reidsville....from 2007 thru 2009 they went 48-0 with three titles...rarely having a close game....the winning streak stretched to 55 straight before losing to Cummings in the 8th game of 2010 season..............

Also the Cummings team with Dwight Jones and the other kid at WR..Both were 6’5 or 6’6 and could outrun everyone...Unheard of to see 2 wideouts with that size and speed in high school...

That was 2006 Cummings we played them in the State Title game....they also had 2 big 1000 yard RBs one who which absolutely shredded us....we were expecting a air raid with those wideouts instead thry spread us out and ran it right up the gut

I know Cummings has fallen mightily, about what year did that happen?

Kinda began in 2012 with 5 win season following 11 year before. No winning seasons since including 0-11 in 2016 and 3-8 last year. Only had 5 losing seasons from 1979 through 2011.
Where did all the athletes go and where?

Offensively - 1999 High Point Central Bison

Defensively - 1995 Thomasville Bulldogs

I've always said that if those two squads magically played each other, that the '95 T-ville team would win. That '95 Thomasville team had a defense I haven't seen other 2A teams come close to having. They could have EASILY won the 4A state title that year.

I agree that those are the two best 2A offensive and defensive units I have seen.

Do not agree that Thomasville "easily wins" or wins the 4A title at all. They struggled to win a couple of playoff games by a TD and had a tough night against a Mooresville team that I saw get manhandled by Concord. Do not see Thomasville putting up more points than West Charlotte which had a great defense itself shutting out their first four playoff opponents. That was not one of WC's best teams of the Tom Knotts era and they were the underdog to Byrd which beat the 3A champion, Bertie, by 21 points that season. The Bertie v HP Central 3A title game was a great battle and not sure Thomasville would have beaten either of those two. The great D keeps Thomasville close in those games but do not see the offense needed for the win.

Give me a great defense over a great offense any day Allen brown was a defensive genius,he would have come up with a way to slow down the bison offense just enough to win the game, and make the key stops when I really mattered the most, defense wins ball games...HPC defense wasn't all that great anyway,Tville would score points on them give them 21-28 and I like our chances in that match up

Speaking on 2a only but I have had the pleasure to watch WFR the last few years and that D is something to behold...

Depth and talent wise.. I’ll put the 2016 Rams Against them all!!
The 2016 Rams ? they wasn't even the Best State Championship team to come through Reidsville. The 2002-2003 and 2007,2008,2009 were all better. Way more Athletic

Burlington Cummings 01’/02’/06’.
Shelby (Dax’s Freshman Year)
SWO (all years with Kendric Burney)
WRH (Nate Irving years)

Stan how we looking?
Hard to tell Right now 7 on 7's don't mean a thing when Defensive linemen aren't breathing down your throat, and the whole team is never together. Defensively we will be fine. Not going to go into details on here because kids read these post but Offensively is Where the question mark hangs.

I know I mentioned Randleman in a previous post and yes they had a good 3 year run in the early 80's I believe. Thomasville had an unbelievable team one year with a LB named Vincent Steele and a RB by the name of Tim Sanders. Does anyone know the years that these 2 played? That Thomasville team that they played on was solid on both sides of the ball. Allen Brown was a great coach for "The Dawgs" and really miss seeing him on the sidelines.

From a Shelby fan...
2004 - SW Onslow (Burney at QB/DB)
1997 - Clinton (Willie Parker and co.)
2003 - Cummings (Tate brothers, etc.)
2007 - Reidsville (TE and DT were beasts)
2005 - East Rutherford

You left out the 06 Pisgah.

HP Central 1999 hands down best 2A team ever. I hate to say it given that I’m an Andrews guy but they had the best offense and defense in 2A that year and led the state in interceptions, all while having three 2,000 yard rushers. Just crazy talent on that team.

I remember Eastern Randolph and HPC meeting in the regional final both undefeated. One TD battle. ER slowed them down but HPC did the same on the defensive side.

How did East Davidson play HPC so close, five point game? Did anyone see that game?

Didn’t see the game but I recall one game
That year where a few kids were suspended and there was some type of altercation at a game. Was thinking it was Ledford but East Davidson sounds right.

Btango we know it said 2a but did u ever get to see James Mc Dougal play 4 the Maxton Golden Eagles he ran over all that was put up against him .just hand d ball 2 him t

Did not. Just a bit too early for me. Did not venture too far from the old Western NCHSAA in those days when I relied on transportation. Have met James several times over the years. Finally broke through Robbinsville to win the state title his senior year which was the only team to beat Maxton from 1973-1975.

1974 Murphy led by the great Willie Brown was 14-0 and 2A state champs. Ended Sylva Webster's 36 game winning streak when they came to The Hill .... SW was led by future Tennessee and CFL qb Jimmy Streater and legendary coach Babe Howell....The 74 game Murphy/Sylva Webster game was one of the most hyped SMC matchups of all time....South Stanly was really good that year to and waged an epic 2A Western Final at Murphy in FRIGID conditions...73 Sylva Webster and 74 Murphy would be very competitive in any era just my opinion of course....73 Murphy was 9-1 and only loss to Sylva Webster state champs,,,,Dogs might've been 2nd best 2A team in 73....

The 70's was a great era of football for mountain teams for sure: That 73 Sylva Webster team also had Steve Streater that played WR and Punted along with LBer Ronnie Smith who went on and played at Clemson....Also, the Golden Eagles had Phillip Howell and Ty Alston who were also very good atheletes, and they had one of the greatest coaches coaching them in Babe Howell....SMC Football back then was off the chart with Murphy, Sylva-Webster, Swain County and Franklin all claiming 2A titles in the 70's, and I didn't even mention little ole Robbinsville who was dominating the 1A ranks during that same span as a member of that 1A conference....Amazing to think that, Jim Streater was first team All-State in Football, Baseball and Track and Field. during that era, and was one of the greatest atheletes IMO to ever play in the state of NC.....

Never saw them play, but a friend of mine from high point told me of a high point central team from 1998 or 1999 that had an incredible back field. Several 1000 yard plus backs. Not sure if 2A or 3A. Must have been heck of a team.
