Behavior

As a Official myself

I would like see 3 things
1. Better Pay 8$ is better than nothing and I remember from a few yr ago one made 300$ for all 4 game which isn’t trouble but could be more bc not everyone get do all 4 game usually

2. More training - I would love have college level Officals and higher rates Officals to hold camps in May. In AZ they have really big Scrimmages and u get up 8 games so I would like see that here and they usually hold them at colleges

3. Better support from AD and other important figures at games bc some just don’t care. And I believe no matter the level weather it’s pop Warner football , AAU Basketball or whatever They all need have cops or security
So these camps in May…
Most guys are doing baseball and softball playoffs then because they do several sports.

Agree with the security part.

Friend of mine is working 11 basketball games in next 8 days. Just told me. He also told me, for like the umpteenth time, how short handed they are. Trying to recruit an old guy.
That’s sad…
I have not called basketball in 10 years and still get asked if I would come back every year. And the answer is always the same. H** No!

Again Some may miss it you know but U gotta more training and usually it’s on a week day so it’s like Thursday, Friday , Saturday so I mean it’s not best but You have more training eventually at some point

Why if I may ask? Luckily for me I haven’t had any issue at Rec Level or my 2 years in HS level thankfully

As I stated earlier guys and ladies have real jobs and most cannot take off for a Thursday, Friday camp. A lot would miss it truthfully. Not saying it’s a bad idea but the logistics don’t work. Again for majority of officials it is a part time job.

It worked in AZ so and I’m sure they have jobs and life’s too so your point is? They do their before the season so like Nov time and they do at other times to but you can say they still doing football but like I said some may have to miss it but training is training

I don’t want to speak for Sportsnut but basketball is bad because you’re in a closed in area with the parents of future Lebrons and/or Sue Byrds who are very vocal…
I agree…. In AZ I had a issue with a team n their coach we had 7 Tech in that game

I think I made my point just fine sir.

You and I also agree on many things but this one you have it a little wrong in my opinion. I have coached and officiated. Nobody in any of the posts has said a word about money being the reason people are leaving officiating. Assistant coaches don’t make jack in any HS sport. Football HC doesn’t get paid enough for time spent usually but they are used to having EVERYONE listen to what they have to say and not doubt them (until they lose and then whew)..So yeah it’s a lot like what a losing HC goes through but officials hear it every game at all times. And if a football guy does 4 games in those 4 weeks it’s still short of $500. Are officials “soft”? I can’t really say but if you don’t have these soft guys you aren’t going to have organized sports anymore
Football guys usually do Wednesday (middle school) Thursday (jv) and Friday varsity....Idk the exact pay but just say they get 50 bucks a game that’s 600 bucks in 4 weeks....and let’s be honest a lot of those games are so one sided everyone knows the outcome before the game starts

Old School. What should happen now is Lifetime Ban them or Fine them.
That’s a little harsh - I think need happen is start give people fines , Community services or jail time esp if they repeat offenders

Like make fines 1 first offense - 50$
2nd - 125-200$
3rd - 500$ and 10 hours community service

4th time is Community service , Fines and possible jail time

5th time jail time

I'm a 63-3/4 year old white man. Born and bred redneck. I can say this is not about race. As many games as I have been too at so many different places whites is just as bad as blacks and blacks are just as bad as whites when they think in their mind they been screwed over by a bad call. I find it embarrassing. But I can say one thing that does stand out and it's not about sports. I'm a lineman with a local utility cooperative. If we have to have power out for a while and I have to go knock on doors to let people know we have to kill the power for a while please let it be Black folk that I'm dealing with. You go knock on the door at white folk house and they start telling you how they are fixing to wash it dry clothes. They got to vacuum or dry their hair. They could give you excuses longer than the outage would take. I hate it. Go knock on the door of Black folk and they will say yes go ahead and stop what they doing and come sit out in the porch and watch you work and talk to you. I been doing this going on 38 years. I'm telling you this is fact. White people can be embarrassing.
Why don't we have a down vote to click? Awful post....worst I've ever seen here.

I agree that officials should be treated with more respect, but why would you even mention race and who cares where you work, your age, if you’re a redneck, or what pole you climbed for 38 years or who's freaking door you knock on. You're pretty embarrassing yourself. Stop bragging on yourself and making race an issue with this subject. Many come here to get away from all the race issues in today's world. The substance of your post is nothing more than your opinion - not FACT. You have contradicted yourself as well by saying this post is not about race and then spew all that other stuff about whites and blacks.
Gave up officiating high school basketball and volleyball a few years ago. But, in my experience, the offenders were almost exclusively white and middle aged. Almost never heard anything from any minority fan. A few student sections who thought they were the Cameron Crazies. And women were as bad or worse than most men. Nothing like an enraged mama bear who thinks they know the rules, but doesn’t have a clue.
Maybe you should have given up officiating sooner or better yet never started officiating.
Sounds like some officials can't handle being criticized for making bad calls. And some appear to be misogynists for singling out women who disagree with a bad call. Once again, I don't agree with some of the abuse officials have to tolerate, but to hyperbole sex, race, age on this message board regarding the behavior of fans, players and coaches toward officials is just as wrong as hollering at an official after they made a terrible call.

I was a NCHSAA official several years ago and have coached many years in different sports. Been there done that. Criticism comes with the territory and some officials have thin skin and seem to forget coaches, players and fans want to win and be treated fairly. The HCs livelihood’s on the line as well. Trade places with the coach and see how the shoe fits when you get an erroneously bad call with the game on the line. However, once again, I agree, officials do not deserved to be verbally abused. If fans are verbally abusing officials with profanity or threaten them physically, they should be permanently banned, otherwise they should be ignored. It's not the YMCA get a participation trophy, there's a lot at stake and with that comes fierce competition. I mean should they say “aw shucks” and just forget it? Let’s be real.

The NCHSAA/NFHS needs to provide officials with better training and increase their pay. On the other hand more stringent rules and guidelines must be enforced to remove fans when they cross the line of so called bad behavior. As long as human beings are officiating games, mistakes will be made and as long as human beings watch, play or coach sports, emotions will be involved. The ultimate goal should be to strive for better sportsmanship from all parties and leave all this other nonsense out of it.

Well this thread has taken some turns hasn’t it?

Started with a story about how many officials are considering getting out due to fan behavior.
Somehow was changed to how much they are paid. Quite a few mentioned that officials need better training. And of course they are soft…
Wow indeed…

And the ones focusing on pay, training, and officials being soft are the issue, but they don't believe they are the issue and believe people should take crumbs and be abused while being thankful they get paid.

Thank you…
I’ve been told on here that people seldom get my hidden meanings in my messages…
Ok really was told I’m not funny and need to keep my nose out of people’s business…
That’s the same thing right?? 🤷‍♂️

Had a football coach that was so bad on the sidelines, that supervisor of officials had a talk with principal, he told her between the officials your coach has marked off and the number of officials that has marked them off, getting officials for their school is difficult. That conversation was held 3 years ago, coach still there and behavior still happening.

Program record?

How many times has he been tossed? Some of these coaches see the coach K and Roy Williams effect on referees.

I think officials should get more pay. I also think that coaches, fans, parents, students should be punished on a graded scale.

First offense warning, Second offense pay a fine(to the municipality the game is occurring), third offense pay a fine and banned for a year or more depending on the severity. T

Life is getting expensive, once you hit people with fines and banning I think it will remove at minimum half of the harrassment. For the record, cussing the ref from the stands once or twice is not a big deal to me, but following them to their cars is over the top and bannable, as well as CONTINUOUS cussing for a whole half or quarter.

On the flip side, to balance things out fans, coaches, etc should be able to file complaints about refs in a suggestion box type of format, with check boxes and short answer blank lines, preferably online, but also paper format available at a convenient location at the stadium to be mailed in. This should shut people up, on PRINCIPLE

Implement and advertise new rules like this for starters.

Concrete rules and reviews can "civilize" the environment much better than it is now.

Fan behavior is a reflection of the degradation of our society and culture in general. Things that were shunned or made us blush 40 years ago are accepted today as "it is what it is." Violence is an accepted solution to a problem for many. The bench clearing brawl this week between the Pistons and Magic is a prime example. I really don't see this getting better unless there is a concerted effort between all parties to bring the hammer down on offenders. If you have to be escorted out of a high school event you should receive a 365 day ban for the first offense. A second offense should result in a lifetime ban. Forget fines. Most of the types of people that would fall into this group would find a way to not pay it anyway.

Chopper, school systems don’t have the legal ability to fine anybody. Barring a state law, either a city or county would have to pass an ordinance with some level of enforceability. Different towns and cities would likely legislate differently, or not at all. So behavior at Thomasville might be handled differently than in Lexington, or West Davidson. Same conference, different rules and fines. And ultimately, like a parking ticket, it may or may not be enforceable in court, which is the ultimate test. Assault? Yes, handled by law enforcement. Screaming obscenities at a ref? Maybe communicating threats or some other current law.
Schools do, however, have the right to remove or ban a fan to ensure public safety.

yeah, I think it's the pragmatic solution, with each town having the freedom to legislate and enforce it as they like.

I also think the review/evaluation card(physical and/or online) will provide a place for people to vent. All that pinned up frustration needs to be let out somewhere in a more respectful format.

Cussing an official at any point is unacceptable.

All I hear is how we are a lost society without morals and blah blah blah. The same ones crying that junk are the same ones that "say it like it is" as they think, then thump their Bible before acting like a prick.

Chopper, I promise not one in fifty towns or counties would touch it. It’s like a noise ordinance. Most people want one, but few can agree on what and how loud should be covered. And no cop wants to enforce one. Too subjective.

I agree wholeheartedly. Everyone knows it’s a problem but won’t fix it because “those people” are the ones who helped elect city/town governments.

Is you is or is you ain’t my constituency???

Let’s not pretend that the pistons back in the day didn’t have a few scuffles....they didn’t get the name bad boys for nothing lol

This current generation isn’t dealing with it. Kudos to this young man.
