Some of them are doing better than I thought. Even more interesting, they have Dee Walsh at Robbinsville as being a football coach only and making $43K a year. Surely he does something else in the county besides coach.

Now I know this may be considered public record, but I dont feel comfortable in knowing what I dont NEED to know. JMO. I am certain these guys earn every penny of whatever their salary is, and need not apologize for it. The only job I think would be worse than a head football coach would be a head referee. Wouldnt do that job for 1000 dollars per game.

As someone with a publicly available salary, I believe that this information is useful and instructive. For one, I think they deserve these salaries. I believe the best response to this information is evaluating these kinds of figures for all teachers, especially those with extra curricular activities that give students opportunities outside the classroom. I would wager that your average ag teacher, choral director or special ed teacher is pretty much giving their time back to society on the weekends and evenings as well.

I agrees totally tasteless article and yes coaches teachers administration they all earn every single dime ..again I'll speak on franklin as thats the program I'm most factually familiar with..if the football coach resigned tom he would lose $7500..so for those who can't follow what I'm saying is he makes $7500 to coach football or about 1$ hr for the 12 months he works on football..the article fails to mention he's national board certified in business w 20 yrs exp and is also the county business coordinator and testing coordinator..and I HAVE NO DOUBT almost every coach on that list has a,story to be told..i ask them to be shared..coaches have a monumental impact on kids lives and earn every DAMN dime..the citizens times is a 2nd rate absolute joke...and to you mule...being a DAMN head referee is a cupcake walk in the park compared to coaching..thats one hideous ass analogy..

Spent 12 yrs coaching and 10 yrs officiating mule. Sounds like you've spent most of your time behind a pen and a desk..

Counting driving time that's still better than 15 an hr so that's about 14 more and hr than coaches and about 15 more an hr than most of the officials I have saw work games deserve...id suggest if you don't like the pay go back to your day job and stay there

It was printed by a 2nd rate struggling newspaper w a joke for a sports editor I'm guessing w very few ties to WNC..Andrew Pearson did a very good job w HS sports while he was here. Unfortunately he left and we were left with this genius..read his write ups on Fridays games and you will find MULTIPLE INACCURACIES DUE TO SIMPLE LACK OF KNOWLEDGE AND RESEARCH..IT WAS POSTED TO CREATE JEOULOSY AND ANIMOSITY..i don't know what he's paid but he's overpaid

Which in your eyes is something less.....Right? And you sure had me fooled. Sounded to me like you were still IN high school.

Congressmen/women, Senators, governors even Presidents have their salaries listed as public record. I understand freedom of information and public record. At any rate, I expect they dont work NEARLY as hard, or put in the long hours as the worst football coach in America. What I dont understand is if "stipends" or supplements are public or private, and if either is ALSO considered public record.

I think it is good that it was posted. Coaches and teachers in NC as a whole are underpaid! How many coaches do we have to lose to SC when they hit 30 years in the system or leave with less than 30 (over 20) and take their retirement later. SC lists their coaches salaries each year and there are a lot making over $90k although some are AD but they have assistants and secretaries. If a person's follows the school system and school board meetings they often know what people are making.

In small systems with multiple schools the coaches normally get the exact same stipends and the pay is based on recognized years in the state system.

Here is an example. One of the top coaches in NC in the largest system making $70k with 30 years in the system. They would not allow a double dip and the system did not allow part time or coach only. Takes his $40k retirement and seven state titles to SC. $104,800 salary as HFC and AD with an assistant AD and full time athletic deptartment secretary. More assistants and they are paid more. Add in pay for coaching each week of the playoffs and the bonus for the state title. First season there the school made the playoffs for the first time in years. Two home playoff games with nearly 20,000 paid attendance. Not to mention regular season attendance more than doubled.

1) All of this is public record, yes even the stipends, so to get bent out of shape about it is pointless. If you didn't want to know or don't care then pass it by.

2) The AC-T is a two bit rag of a paper who can't afford to do much in the way of reporting anything anymore so they hit the Easy button. If it isn't of interest to the LGBT community or microbrewing, it isn't worth their time. At some point they will fold or some entity will create another news source for this area. The Internet changed the playing field for the printed word. Info that we used to have to wait til tomorrow to find out is now readily accessible in our pocket. Most have not adapted real well.

For example our closest D1AA (FCS) football team is 6-2 and fighting for a conference championship. They have yet to send a reporter nor photgrapher and on one Sunday didn't even print an AP wire report. It's less than an hour's drive from the office.

3) I have heard teachers poor mouth their salaries for years, knowing full well that the dollar amount you hear quoted is only their state salary and never includes what the county kicks in to their pay. i.e. Josh Brooks- He's pulling in $70K plus. Subtract his coaching supplement, he's still in the $60K salary range. That's double what teachers claim they're making in most instances. I assume he has been teaching about 15 years or so given his age. That's a pretty good climb.

4) Purlsey and Gentry are retired and drawing their pension. I'm sure their are some tax ramifications involved with their lower than average rate.

Wow - just read all the comments on their Facebook page. I'm surprised they haven't apologized for the posting the article.
