I've been busy with trying to moving, a career and looking to start my own business. Anybody heard anything about Spring practice for the dogs? We didn't lose much last year besides a coach or two. It was hard to swallow last year and I don't have huge expectations out of them this year, but hopefully we will start to climb out of pits of hell and become relevant again in the next two years.

Still don't see them shutting Albemarle down, but the people in this county are lost and confused. They should've voted in the tax increase, in which no one would have missed 4 cent on the dollar.

...anyway back to the topic. How will the dogs look in 2016?

I'd say it's 50/50 that Albemarle plays football in August. The sales tax defeat was the nail in that school's coffin. I feel so bad for Peter Asciutto for being the only Commissioner that was willing to save Albemarle lose his election.

We should find something out this week if Albemarle shuts down. Those who voted against the sales tax increase need not complain.

My guess is that NS and SS will benefit should Albemarle not play ball in the fall.

The BOE meeting tomorrow night will tell us what lies ahead. If they are going to approve Plan B it will have to be at this meeting. Time is short for the next school year.

Buddy, without being a wet blanket, Plan B will be implemented and Tomorrow night's meeting most likely be only a formality. If not approved tomorrow, it will be approved in the next month.

The question that needs to be answered is when will the high school be closed? Depending on the legalities and who you ask, it could be closed after this school year or after the 2016-17 school year. There's considerable misinformation that's being spread around.

Even if the school remains open for the next calendar year, I'm not positive that the school will field a team. From my own observations, no one within the school has shown much investment to field a football team next year. If the school fields a team, I don't believe you will see much improvement at all from last season. The program has been hurt at its roots. I haven't seen this program down this low for 25 years.

Sway, it was not 4 cents on the dollar. It was 1 cent on $4. The bill was .25% increase on the sales tax or 25 cent on $100. That is what is excruciatingly painful to fathom.

Yep, you buy $40 dollars of car parts and it would have cost you exactly one dime.

This is what I laugh about....Peter Asciutto has been vilified by the people who he was trying to help. Last week he made a post on his Facebook page and some Stanly County natives were being brutal towards him. Someone blared out the rhetoric "blah blah blah, just cut wasteful spending, blah blah blah". When asked to give examples of wasteful spending, this person didn't give one example. Not one. Nada. Some hear rhetoric and just want to repeat it over and over again.

I don't mind people being frugal but why would you be unwilling to give a measly dime extra if you bought $40 were of merchandise?

The people have spoken, a good, functional school will be closed because some can't see the forest because of the trees.

Thanks Tango.

Speaking with one of the players yesterday, he told me that he may go to North. I told him you gotta do what you gotta do.

This county is a laughing stock.. The only thing this county cares about are restaurants and electing the same "Family Members" over and over again; even though they don't benefit from it...blows my mind. We might as well be the Atlanta school system as far as I can tell.

I think the school will stay open. I also think they will field a team. (I also thought Carolina would win the Super Bowl, that a Happy Meal would make me happy, that I could keep my doctor if I liked my doctor, that 15 minutes would save me 15% on my car insurance... and that the phone would ring from Publisher's Clearing House.) Don't take my word on it.

LOL!!!!!

School Board Meeting Update: For the school year 2016-2017. Oakboro Elementary will be closed. There will be redistricting at all High Schools and Middle Schools. All other schools will be open. The vote was 5-1.

That's a surprise. Redistricting has been something that has been needed to be done for years but the past school school boards and this current one up until now has avoided the issue like it was a disease.

Surprise is putting it mildly Dogs9. I really think this board wanted to do "Something" and this is the results. They call it "Plan V".

I would never recommend a teacher / coach to go to Stanly County to work.

The newly elected school board member wanted to cut coaching supplements completely and stated that the coaches should do it because they love it. That is total BS.

I truly think he would try to have any teacher fired that is against is plans and I expect the teacher from West Stanly will be in his scope when he takes office to at least make his life miserable.

I said this many times over and over but no one wanted to believe me. Redistricting was going to happen, but regardless of that, Stanly County education system are the sticks and stones in my back yard. I am Sway and I approve this message...

Nothing is a done deal yet Sway. For all we know no schools may close and no redistricting may take place. Families and concerned interest groups and a politician in Raleigh can still delay this.

Believe me, when the students are in school next year on day one we will know it has definitely happened.

I for one am glad all my kids are out of school.
A year from now we'll have a bigger mess than we do now. Some of the very people on these boards that wanted to impeach the current school board will be in for a rude awaking. It's never popular when something near and dear to you is no longer as it was. One thing we keep telling our members at church is let go of the sacred cows; they hinder progress. I don't want Norwood school to close but I also know something has to change; we don't need and can't afford all the schools we have. An educator friend of mine, who left Stanly County approx 15 years ago said the people of Stanly Co (as a whole) are as educated as they want to be.

The voters' statement was "stop your whining and make it work". The average voter didn't want to even consider that a problem exists with the schools.

Closing one school is not by itself going to solve the problem.

The western part of the county will get real nasty if their kids are shipped to AHS.

I'm sorry that the WSHS teacher didn't have that private conversation with Poole.

This fixes nothing. There will be voices that are now silent but I promise there be a WHOLE NEW CHORUS of voices that are getting warmed up! The problem with the new "angry mob" is many of them are going to include powerful, wealthy, politically tied folks. This is going to get ugly so grab some popcorn and pull up a chair!! hahaha

I kinda agree with billythekid. The western end of the county has been pretty quiet with the exception of the Oakboro issue, but with redistricting all hell is about to break loose.
ps. I'll bet Melvin Poole is licking his chops!!

Poole has been hitting facebook hot and heavy since last night's BOE decision to close Oakboro. In short, he has vowed that "any school system employee who is hired with funds from closing a school will have a short term of employment".

Further rumblings are that the new board, which will be sworn in December 2016, will immediately reverse any decisions made by the current board. (Because of a lack of candidates, the primary winners in all but one race will be the overall winners, and will comprise a majority)

Unfortunately, the students are the ones who will get jerked around the most if that happens.

That kind of statement is exactly why I'm glad Thomasville doesn't have an elected school board. Political decisions at local and state level are rapidly destroying public education. The fact that he's saying it on Facebook says volumes. What a shame.

How or who runs the Thomasville school system ? Isn't Thomasville still under their own city school system and not in the Davidson County System? That was the biggest mistake Albemarle made when they let the County Commissioners force them to join the county system.

Thomasville and Lexington are both in Davidson County and separate systems. The state would like to see a merger, but neither the county or the two systems want to merge. To much money to be lost by Tville and Lex systems if they merge.

Albemarle is a perfect example of how disconnected and separated people are here in America...

I guess you can call Albemarle "Little USA"...

As another poster said, Thomasville is a system unto itself, as are Lexington and Asheboro. Thomasville's school board is appointed by the city council. The council is non-partisan, so there are no party politics anywhere in the picture. You can't completely eliminate politics in anything, even business, church or the Rotary Club. But this method certainly minimizes it.
I don't believe school boards or sheriffs should be elected offices. But that's just me. I also believe all judges and local government officials should be non-partisan. We are very fortunate in Thomasville to have had some very dedicated, professional school board members over the last twenty or thirty years.

Time to rant. I feel so, so sorry for the parents and kids in the stanly county school system. These kids have been put throught so much indecision by the adults in positions of power, on both the BOE and CC. You people were elected to make decisions for the good of all the students in stanly county. And you have all failed miserablely!!!!!. Where in the hell did plan V come from ???????????. We as adults in this county have failed our kids so bad. We have got to be the laughing stock of the state. And what do we do !!. We elect Melvin Poole back to his tatics of WS first and everybody else second. Will it ever end. Probably not!!!

The people that vote these same people in over and over again probably has never seen or surfed the internet. Sad but true...

I guess they were waiting to determine the school would remain open.

Absolutely. Will probably be a tough hire with all the uncertainty of the school's future.

It will be hard to bring in a quality coach, damn near impossible as a matter of fact. Look for someone young with no experience as a HC..

If they redistrict and bring some kids back...this is still a good job. Unlike last year, there is no mention of the school closing. I don't see it as a gloomy hire. I bet they get a good coach. Maybe someone from an area hs would be ready for a head position. Look at North Davidson or maybe Richmond to name a few....surely there are some good assistants ready for a fresh start...
