6 Classifications

Okay...I've taken the weekend and a few days to look over the 5A class system more...either you try to split for more favorable ADM gaps - or you try to split for more even teams. The general consensus I get from everyone here is you'd rather see more even teams and we'll live with the ADM gaps.

Give or take...the numbers don't move too much...but definitely makes for a better playoff field. I like the way the splitting for teams looks.

This is what I got:

Realignment Data Review Post
SPLITCLASSTEAMSADMADM GAPPO TEAMS
19%5A701684--3688200448
21%4A781155--167351848
21%3A78861--115329248
21%2A78622--86023848
19%1A70152--61446248

It'll take a hot minute, but I'll run a side by side comparison to our current 4A system in place so we can see how that looks. In the meantime I'll post the classes - Conferences - Playoffs - some housekeeping rules.

General Notes:

--This is for football only conferences - I think we all agree football needs its own conferences

--I have NO split conferences - this does give us some 3 team and 4 team conferences and one 2 team conference. Seems ugly, but hear me out and realize that RPI weighs more than anything, hence you want a great schedule that you perform well in, so it's less about your conference and more about how you play/who you play. The less teams in your conference the more your scheduling can help you.

--For 2/3/4 team conferences - a team must finish first to be considered a CC (duh). The CC for these conferences must have an RPI greater than or equal to the top 50% of their classification to be designated an auto qualifying CC. For 1A and 5A this means the top 35 schools in RPI - for 2A/3A/4A this means the top 39 schools in RPI.

--For 5/6/7 team conferences - the CC auto qualifies - remaining schools are WC

--For 8/9/10 team conferences - the CC auto qualifies - The second place team is an auto WC (Second Card (SC))- remaining schools are WC

--No predetermined E/W - will take the best 48 schools for each Class - accounting for all qualifying CC first - then all SC second - then the remaining will be WC in RPI order

--Once 48 are established - Will split E/W based on Longitude

--Seed the 24 E/W schools in RPI order - regardless of CC/SC/WC designation

--11 Week regular season with 10 games/1 bye week - 6 week playoff with the top 8 E/W seeds for each class getting a 1st round bye (I still love this concept)

I just want to say. I appreciate you all putting up with me...well those who actually look at it...the ones who don't are obviously tired of putting up with me hahahaha.

It's just a passionate hobby of mine to look into this. I want the most competitive/fair/exciting/beneficial football experience possible for the players and fans as possible. No I don't have all the answers, all of us collectively might. There is no right answer to solve all the problems.

I think the RPI set-up is great, I think it needs a tad of an adjustment to be as close to perfect as we can get. I think that the RPI set-up gives us a real chance to scrap the split conferences if we really want to because it gives scheduling flexibility to more remote teams to put stronger teams on their schedule instead of having to play lower class teams. These teams have the option to play up instead to better their chances at a higher RPI.

Thanks for all the work. I do think they need to discard the “opponents’ opponents’“ factor. Too much penalty for things that teams absolutely have no control over. It’s one thing for Salisbury to be penalized for its weak conference. But it’s ludicrous to think they should be penalized for South Davidson not scheduling Shelby.
Matchups and home field are big in the results in the playoffs. So being a six or eight seed versus a one or two seed can mean a lot.

The 5A proposal looks good. I see North Moore in a conference with teams it used to play when it was in the Yadkin Valley 1A Conference. As for Union Pines, it's back with schools from the old 3A Tri County 6 conference. Pinecrest is in a 5A league where it belongs. I'm none too crazy about the current 3A/4A Sandhills Athletic Conference. Now, just what would six classes possibly look like? 🤔

Thanks. I know from previous experience with Chatham Central, Union Pines, Northwood, etc., that our folks won’t travel an hour. Not even for football, much less other sports. That may sound crazy to folks in the east or the western mountains. But we’re too near High Point, Greensboro and Winston, with many other things to do on a Friday night. Not many will drive two hours round trip for a blowout, as those games used to be. As we have gone from 1,000 students to 638, high school football is no longer the only game in town. And many of the families of those kids have neither the transportation nor the means to regularly make those trips.

If they're scheduled home and away...then that's only one game a year...if you can call that a silver lining. Maiden doesn't travel near as well to West Caldwell (50 min) and didn't to Lake Norman Charter when we played them either (50 min).

True. Unfortunately, the corollary is also true. Those teams don’t visit us either. It might work from a gate perspective, if we scheduled East Davidson, Ledford, Oak Grove, North Davidson as non-conference games. In other words, the last conference we were in with much larger schools. So you’re back to gate versus record. You make money, or you have a good record for the playoffs.

Do conferences based not only on adm but use natural rivalries and geography. Essentially every conference is split. Then by current year adm, split into 6 classes after playoff teams are determined.

no more new schools with 4A numbers playing in 2a five years after the school opens.
In AZ - Football only they can play up or down for lack of success or success so example River valley in AZ has under 500 students but they play in 3A while all other sports are 2A also they do 2 year realignments n also they don’t just use ADMs and also 1A-3A has its own committee and 4A-6A has their own committee so like 1A started first in football then 2A/3A then 4A-6A started so 6A is the last to finish reg season. Even playoffs 1A is done first and so on

While cool, I did this all myself in a couple weeks while still working full time. No disrespect to the AZ committees or what we have here in NC....but two committees and a bunch of people is unnecessary in my opinion, this isn't rocket science, you come up with an idea, then you create that idea, you look at it, you create your second idea, compare, create the third...you can see where I'm going. Then you pick the best one and tweak it every realignment if needed. Every 10 years or so you reset and start over because a lot changes.

I believe 5A class with 5 champions is what is best right now. They probably don't want to change that much bc they're complacent and most likely don't want to put in that kind of work....cool, then leave it 4A class but give us 5 or 6 champions

Here is the summary of differences for the proposed Maiden conference (positive numbers/negative numbers summary):

TeamOpp Change2yr Travel ChangeOpp RPI Change
Maiden0-120
Bunker Hill03720
West Lincoln0-2420
East Gaston15223
Lincolnton0-2520
Newton-Conover02320
Bandys0-520
Bessemer City17520

so for this new conference - Bessemer City gets the worst travel change adding 75 total minutes to their 2yr cycle while Lincolnton makes out the best by shaving 25 total minutes off.

for the OPP RPI CHANGE, I ranked every team in the state from 1 to 374 based off of RPI...so for this column it's showing that all the teams, on average, will face a better schedule by 20 ranks except for East Gaston who will see an increase of their average competition by +23.

I can do this for all 374 teams...but I really don't want to. So for now...if anyone is interested in seeing what the change would look like for their team in my proposed conferences you can let me know.

A quick side by side comparison
If something like this happens in ‘23…like someone has mentioned….there’s a ton of work to be done in a short period of time.
The feedback from others was limited… maybe it’s too much data… or simply.…it doesn’t matter….NCHSAA gonna do it their way anyhow. It’s tough to judge from other parts of the state on how significantly your suggested alignment will affect them.

I like how you’ve eliminated split conferences; however, the increase of small conferences (3, 4 and 5 team etc.) prolly won’t fly…even though the overall number of conferences only increase by 10. That’s not terrible in my opinion.

I love the 1st round byes because it makes the opening round more competitive.

I love the slight reduction in overall number of playoff teams….there were too many.

I like how it’s setup regionally….but I have no idea on the impact of travel time for the different areas of the state. Ours is not bad at all.

I like no predetermined east and west.

I like for football only.

I like RPI better than 50% for small conference champions.

However it is done…..I foresee a lot of scrambling to find teams to play in non-conference for the teams impacted the most. If there are more conferences… that means more conference administrators as well…not many more though.

It’s gonna be entertaining…. However this happens….if it happens!😉

Yes there would definitely be an emphasis on non conference opponents for the smaller conferences...however, they only exist because I refused to do split conferences.

In any case, you won't know until you do the work and put it on paper what you have. Hell, I'd be happy to spend my free time doing it for them (practically already have). I'll do it for free (don't want the process tainted by money). All I'd ask for is, food and a cooler of libations.

SAS out of Raleigh has provided computer simulated programs for classifications and conferences. The complaint from schools, and a very valid one, is if you are in a large conference (nine or more teams) your non conference scheduling is limited and if you are in a smaller conference (seven or less teams) the scheduling becomes difficult. Not that easy to grab a game deep into the season when all other conferences are playing conference opponents. This was the complaint about going to six.

I still think four is the most simple option but the issue is charters and open enrollment schools in the smaller classifications especially 1A(!). It is not just charters but Bishop and the WS Preps that throw the system out of whack. If those schools did not exist in the computation it would be much more simple and fair.

Another item is the four classification system has worked well in the non football sports. We have seen over the years where a school that is in the small split of the classification when state titles. I think numbers are more important in football than any other sport. I will never support eight football champions but six I find the sweet spot. The best option may be to do a football alignment and one for all other sports which was presenteed about ten or twelve years ago but the schools could not wrap their heads around that much change.

Since doing this I believe my favorite is 3 classifications. Makes it a whole lot easier on conferences. Then when it comes time for playoffs you break it up to 6 brackets...the 64 best from each class...separate the 32 lowest adm and 32 highest for the split. Then divide east and west...then seed based off rpi

That has been presented and I like that, also. My one big complaint is I do not want to see more state champions in the non football sports. Four works very well. The issue there once again is the "non district" schools. Until that is figured out it is a complete cluster.

The schools complaint on the three classes was the drastic size difference of the schools in some of the conferences and it was huge in many cases.

I want to see something totally out of the box but every option I have seen does not work as well for conference makeup as four classifications. It has been studied in-depth using the computer simulated programs. Basically the user can request the breakdown for a classification using whatever parameters they wish. Say they opt for three classes evenly distributed by enrollment only. They can then click and review the schools that are in each class. You can cast that to a map and see the schools.

Football can easily be setup if it is football only. The biggest item is the playoffs and that can be worked with 3, 4, 5, or 6 classifications to what the coaches want but they have to work together a bit. Qualifying can be fairly simple. If 45% of the schools qualify in the structure I had presented no coach should complain about not making the playoffs.

This state is laid out geographically and population centers wise that make what would appear to be a simple task very daunting. Then throw in how some counties operate, ie Forsyth, charters, open enrollment, et al. I tried to explain that to a state rep who felt taking over the NCHSAA would be a very smooth process and could happen in six months. That's is partly why I did not want the state to completely take over.

I agree. Would rather see a five team single classification conference than some crazy split conference of some sort.

I like it, too, but there is a lot more to it. Normally it is going to be an issue for football more than any other sport but a school that is real bad or one that is real good will struggle with filling their schedule.

Albemarle was placed in a ten team conference with four football schools several years ago which was later changed prior to implementation. The AD had been around awhile as had the HC. Think their success at the time was part of the issue but when they started asking schools if they had the same open date would that school play them they did not get many "yes" repsonses.

Thanks to you guys for the work and for the analytical approach. I have neither the time, nor the patience, nor the technological skills to do that, but am very appreciative of those who do. In general, our legislative delegation is a simplistic bunch. They rarely understand (or want to) any subtlety or nuance. Everything is easy, simple and black and white. They need to stay the heck out of high school sports. And, for that matter, most educational issues.
