TN does 6 classifications with no split conferences. If you have to travel a long way it is what it is. My sons old high school has a conference game 188 miles away. Split conferences are awful.

Maiden use to be in the Southern Foothills 1A for 3 years when I played. We had to travel to Polk County and Hendersonville for our furthest games. Also played Cherryville and Bessemer City...not as far but still two counties away.

Thanks man. How is my proposed NE conference in comparison with their current one? Honest opinion...bc I fly kinda blind when it comes to the East...but I do know it's hard to place Manteo and First Flight and when forced to make a decision I split them around Albemarle sound.

Where did you end up putting Manteo? Also our conference just wouldn’t be the same w/o Hertford County and Holmes. Those are our two biggest rivalries. Manteo and First Flight are only about 10 miles apart and believe it or not that is a huge rivalry on the OBX. Manteo has much nicer facilities than FF does, at least stadium wise anyways.

I hear you. Unfortunately, the best gate non-conference scheduling would include North Davidson, Oak Grove, Ledford and East Davidson. Ensures the dollars, but playing teams with significantly more players. Catch 22 that we’ve been fighting for years.

I agree...I am in more of an old school mindset. Football only conferences. Let's break it down into 6 Classifications...no split conferences and you play who you play in conference, it is what it is. You can play all the closer teams in your non-conference schedule. Conferences should be no less than 5 teams.

If you have 5-6 teams you get 1 qualifier.
If you have 7-8 teams you get 2 qualifiers.
If you have 9 or more you get 3 qualifiers.

Playoffs are 5 weeks...that breaks down to 192 teams getting in and 182 teams not making the playoffs...that seems like a fair split to me.

If comes down to how best to split the classes up based off of the ADM...

As a high school football fan… having 3 weeks to watch championship games is right up my alley….doubting it would happen though.
You know Grizz…..maybe 4 classifications with a big and little is the right solution.
The numbers you have listed are challenging to say the least.
If you use 8 to divide all the teams… I don’t believe it would help with the disparity at the top…but….would help with that gaggle of teams in 2a and 3a.

Maybe a super class at the top like SC has….and then divide 2a and 3a….that makes 7 champions!

It seems to me like if you want 6 classes, your better off using the mindset that conference classes and championship divisions are two different things. Like someone mentioned on here before...keep the 4A conference classes but break the playoffs down into 6 Championship divisions.

I'm working on @Maiden Creek 5A conference classes right now to see what it would look like.

So far my favorite is the 3A conference classes (real easy for conferences) with 6 championship divisions.

Once I'm done with 5A I'll do the "stay 4A but with 6 championship divisions " potential brackets

Sounds kinda weird out loud...but looks damn good in this spreadsheet. The conferences look nice for the most part...really can't get away from split conferences without royally screwing over some teams...and this needs to be a team effort!

The playoffs look really cool how I put my spin on it. I have 48 team playoffs - 24 east/west - and it works out such that the top 8 seeds east/west all get a 1st round bye.

With 5 divisions this still allows 240 playoff teams...or 64% of all the teams making it in. I'll drop my playoff scenarios (based off of this year's RPI) in the next post.

Of all the class scenarios I've been through...the 5A seems to come out the best to me. Qualifying 48 teams for the playoffs works out to be a happy medium between 64 teams and 32 teams, plus rewards the top 16 teams in each class with a 1st round bye.

This last conference I'm showing is a doozie...really no place to put Currituck County as a 3A...just no other 3A schools around for 2 hours or more...however...most of the teams in their conference are some of the closer teams to them and will be teams that they play anyway. I would imagine they would need to finish at least top 3 or be a WC and wouldn't be able to qualify as a CC 3A seed.

I don't understand why you make 1a the highest percentage.
1a Should be the lowest. Should be between 450 and 550 in my opinion. If you look at the difference in 1a smallest to largest it has the largest gap percentage wise.

It's easy to get hung up on the on the extremes high and low...but looking at all the ADM's as a whole you can see that the "mean" ADM for NC football schools is right at 1000 ADM. At that point I need to center the middle class around the 1000 ADM mark the best I can and work the other classes up and down from there. I did this while at the same time considering the actual schools attached to those ADM numbers. While there are some gaps in the ADM numbers between some of the classes...there isn't a gap in the competition. It is more than just the ADM, it's the schools themselves as well.

The NCHSAA's current structure has 1A schools playing in 2A and so on and so forth due to the added glitter they threw on top of the raw ADM numbers. I didn't do any of that...like I said before, it seems like it is weird and it shouldn't be how I have it...but I've stared and stared and moved and figured and slept on it and re-done it time and time again...in my opinion this is the best option that I have come up with.

1A is the highest percentage because despite the ADM gap they are still very close talentwise from around 300 to the top one at 687...I'm not going to make the top teams in the class play up because of statistical outliers at the bottom of the class like WS Prep (152) and Columbia (178) and North Edgecombe (197) are there. There are 10 schools under 300 students...it doesn't matter how I swing this hammer they aren't going to be ton successful whether or not I push out the high 600 ADM schools or not.

And even with the 1900+ ADM difference in 5A...some of the more recent successful programs there are on the bottom half of the 5A ADM. Reidsville has had great great 2A success and they are only 12 schools away from being 1A (and by ADM numbers...that's 24 students).

And I agree...but I don't know that the NCHSAA would ever go for a couple divisions having 64 team 6 week playoff and others having 32 team 5 week playoffs.

So I went with the happy medium 48 team.

You can go 32 team and it isn't fair for the 1a/2a. You can go 64 but then 5a has 64 of 67 teams getting in, that wouldn't be fair to the others either.

And to be fair...it's still over half of the division that gets in. The difference between 48 and 64 teams is a bunch of 4 win and 3 win teams getting in.

Right. I get that…so make the number of teams in each classification even. Probably not as neat and clean for conferences. But SC does the best they can. Just saw their new alignment today. Blythewood near Columbia is in the same region as the Rock Hill schools. Now the problem is travel costs for schools. Simply put no perfect solution.

Maiden use to be in the Southern Foothills 1A for 3 years when I played. We had to travel to Polk County and Hendersonville for our furthest games. Also played Cherryville and Bessemer City...not as far but still two counties away.
