Let me just say that figuring out conferences when you break schools down into 6 classes is an undertaking. No easy way about it.

Almost every conference needs to be a split conference...sometimes 3 ways
1 suggestions has been do 3 classes and then subdivide for playoffs in all sports. Keeps the split conferences to a minimum but evens the playing field in the playoffs.
Now that I'm hip deep I to it...and have put together 61 conferences...I like the 3 classes better in my mind.
It's easy to want 6 in theory but it's rough given the geographic location of some schools.
Do conferences based not only on adm but use natural rivalries and geography. Essentially every conference is split. Then by current year adm, split into 6 classes after playoff teams are determined.

I thought about a no conferences set up where schools just make their own schedule. The RPI formula sets everything straight for the most part.
Maybe a rule: 10 game schedule and 5 of your games must be the same for 4 years. 3 games rotate every 2 years. And 2 games are different every year.
Now I realize that puts more work on the coaches to schedule...but for the most part you'll have 7 immediate games by geography.
I would like to see 1 game mandated by the NCHSAA that is between 2 and 3 hours away, where they pay the cost of travel. A 1 and 1 agreement.
Example: Maiden does a 1 and 1 with Anson High School. Travel paid for by NCHSAA.

Well for what it's worth...and that ain't much...I put together conferences the best I could - made my rules for playoff qualifications:

Would Maiden be the smallest 3a?
Shocked that Cummings and St. Paul’s would move 2 classes….is that right?
Yeah because I changed from 4 classes to 6 classes...Cummings and St Pauls went from the highest of the 2A schools to the lowest of the 4A schools.
3A has 72 schools, ranging from the highest ADM 998 (South Point) to the lowest ADM 780 (Granville Central). The middle split would be between Smoky Mountain at 864 and Graham at 862. Maiden would be 23rd smallest 3A at 840 (tied with South Granville).
For me: 2A has 59 schools, ranging from the highest ADM 775 (Midway) to the lowest ADM 551 (Warren County). The middle split would be at ADM 687 (both Whiteville and Surry Central) . Draughn would be 18th smallest 2A at 630 (tied with Northeastern).
I used the ADM numbers that NCHSAA used for this realignment. (without all the extra push up or down stuff they used)...just the raw ADM.
Understand! The 15-15-20….is why St Paul’s and Cummings moved 2 classes…their ADM must be just above 50% of the schools in NC.

Basically how I'm doing my second attempt but with 3 classes. I'm able to make some super conferences with it. I'll be done with it next week.

They do not want the non football sports having six champions which is what hurts three and they will not reduce one. If going to up it would be to add a small schools non distracted school class.

Thanks, for saying something GrizzlyDevil. It's good with me. We play South Point each year and we played East Gaston for a long time; we're going to be playing the Lincoln County teams anyway, and wouldn't be the same if we didn't. It makes sense. Good Job. 👍

This has been presented to the schools before. They did not like wide variance of the enrollments.
I can see that but with the RPI formula being used it kind of negates that a little.
I'm going to do a sie by side comparison for some schools. Looking at current travel time vs my proposed travel time. And looking at current adm competition vs my proposed adm competition.
I doubt we would ever see schools being willing to go to 3 classes. I do think we will see 5 or 6 classes at some point. SC has far fewer HS than NC and they have 5 classes.
And while the conferences will be based on 3 classifications...the playoffs and championships will be divided into 6 divisions.

Like the NCHSAA is going to pay for anything. They do a lot more collecting than they do dishing out.
3 classes will be horrible for the biggest and smallest schools. The ADM disparity at the 1A and 4A level is already huge.

This gave me 78 schools that were considered an auto CC seed (split conferences had two champions). The remaining 114 schools to make the playoffs were the highest remaining RPI schools...regardless of class. This gives us 192 teams in the playoffs, enough for a 1A through 6A playoff, 32 teams each.
I then arranged those 192 teams by ADM and created the 32 team fields. From there I took each Playoff Classification and divided them East/West, then each Division got seeded 1-16 based off of RPI.
The Playoff ADM Gaps:
6A - Myers Park 3688 / Heritage 1910 = 1778
5A - Cuthbertson 1908 / JH Rose 1435 = 473
4A - SE Guilford 1427 / Rockingham County 1082 = 345
3A - Forestview 1079 / Washington 860 = 219
2A - East Gaston 860 / Northeastern 630 = 230
**Washington went 3A and East Gaston went 2A because Washington was the higher RPI team so they played up even though they had the same ADM number**
1A - Polk County 614 / Andrews 207 = 407

The point in all of this is...what is the best system we can have in place to create the fairest and most competitive playoffs for the state of North Carolina? What passes the eye test? What makes the most sense? Where is the happy middle for all the scenarios?
Even though it sounds bad out loud - the 3A Class conferences really do work out well in my opinion and I believe it cuts down on some conference travel time in most cases. Again...with the RPI system in place now I believe we get a cleaner delineation of how good teams are...I still think it's missing one tiny thing to make it near perfect. I'll be more than happy to show anyone who wants to see any of the conferences and why I made them the way I did. Let me know what teams you're interested in.
